100'-120' Motoryachts:
We Compare Four Megayachts
Hatteras 100 Raised Pilothouse
|
Monte Carlo Yachts 105
|
Hargrave 116 Raised Pilothouse
|
Ocean Alexander 120 Megayacht
|
This week we compare four motoryachts from 100' to 120'. Those with the resources to shop this market have lots of choices to make: do they want a fast, Euro-style yacht that can zip from port to port at 20 knots? Or maybe one that cruises at a leisurely pace, but has a range measured in thousands of nautical miles? If chartering's on the agenda, some layouts work better than others.
For boating with family and friends, maybe a more casual atmosphere works better. In this price range, builders will make whatever custom changes they can to produce a yacht that satisfies the client. They want them coming back for a 150-footer later on. We take an indept look.

Robalo R160:
Rated for 90-HP/Easy to Tow
With a dry weight of just 1,600 lbs. (726 kg) and an LOA of 16'4" (4.98 m), the Robalo R160 is easily trailerable behind midsize cars and should fit readily into most garages, thanks to the included aluminum trailer with swing-away tongue. Her draft is just 10’’ (25 cm), but she has more freeboard than many bay boats in class, which should keep her drier and safer. She's rated for outboards to 90-hp.

Beneteau Swift Trawler:
The 1,000th Swift Trawler Launched
The first Beneteau Swift Trawler was built in 2003, and just 13 years later, in the Fall of 2016, hull #1,000 was launched. For those who don’t know of the miniscule numbers of boats built in this size range, that is a remarkable accomplishment -- to say nothing of "trawlers," each brand of which has annual sales that can be counted on one hand, two at most. The last couple of years, demand has often been so great for the Swift Trawlers that Beneteau has on a couple occasions asked that BoatTEST not write about them -- something that we have only been asked to do a couple of times in our 16-year history. There are now four models, from 30’ to 50’, and they have found a responsive audience because they combine functionality, trawler styling, and simplicity in an easy-to-operate package at an affordable price. Offshore Angling in Grand Style
With five staterooms and four heads, the Hatteras GT 70 is ready to take anglers fishing anywhere in the world in grand style. And she gets to the fish fast; powered with twin 2600-hp MTUs, she ran 41.0 knots in our tests. Lots of fuel capacity gives her a range of over 600 NM at a more sedate 1500 rpms and 21.1 knots. We rank her as the number one 70' convertible on the market.

Beneteau Monte Carlo 5S:
A Smooth Operator Offshore
Our test Captains report on the Beneteau Monte Carlo 5S is one of the smoothest riding boats they have tested in class. It's all about hull shape. The interior features luxurious but durable modern wood finishes. Most joinery is brushed oak, and the standard galley deck is teak slatted, manufactured by Alpi. The aft deck is also slatted teak, a "teak-and-holly" treatment. Head compartments have teak soles and stair treads are also teak. But the important take-away is her ride.

Monte Carlo Yachts 105:
Style and Luxury w/ Practical Engineering
The raised pilothouse of the Monte Carlo Yachts 105 provides a dedicated command post for a professional captain, well separated from the main-deck master suite. The black high-tech composite hardtop is light but strong to keep the center of gravity low and reduce rolling in a seaway. An automatic sun roof shades the upper helm station when desired. Dramatically modern exterior lines make her unmistakably Monte Carlo Yachts, and the Portuguese bridge and entertainment area at the bow provide a huge outdoors gathering spot secure even while underway.

She's light for the genre at just 2,250 lbs. (1,021 kg) without the motor, and proved very economical with the Evinrude E-TEC G2 150 H.O., getting over 5 mpg at 3000 rpms and 20.0 mph.
