Why is the Wheel of the Robalo R222EX in the Center?

Why is the Wheel of the Robalo R222EX in the Center
As can be seen in this image, the wheel is almost on the centerline of the console. But why?

One of Robalo’s most popular boats is the R222EX which is the right size for many applications. But its near-centerline helm (it is actually about 4” to starboard) has some of our readers scratching their heads. “Why wasn’t the wheel placed farther to the right or to the left, as most builders design their consoles?” one of our readers asked. It is a good question, and here’s the answer from the builder…

The Boatbuilder responds:

“Positioning the throttles to the far right of the console allows Robalo to decrease the depth of the console by 20 inches. We don’t have to build an empty wasted cavity in the console for the throttle cables and we run them down the side of the console unlike our competitors. This gives you almost 2 feet of extra usable cockpit space in the boat to work with.

“There’s a reason this boat has so much more space in the cockpit than the competition. The other advantage is a lower console for improved helm ergonomics, visibility, and a forward entry head. These features all tie into the design of the console.

“Hope this helps explain the science behind the helm design of the R222EX.” – The Robalo Team

Note the wide side decks on the R222EX which has ample room even for a portly angler to pass forward and aft.

Capt. Steve investigates the forward-opening head which is much easier to enter than doors on the side of the console.
