Captain's ReportPalmetto Custom is a new line of go-fast offshore fishing boats from the people at Sea Pro Boats, who have been steadily building a positive reputation manufacturing more conventional sport fishing boats since 1988.The Palmetto 360 has a long, lean profile that is matched to a deep-V bottom that has 24-degrees of deadrise aft and a sharp entry forward. The benefit of this design is being first to the fish during competitive tournaments, with more lines down time on the fishing grounds once you arrive. The Palmetto’s fishing features include a 50-gallon livewell and a bait prep center with freshwater sink situated in the transom cap. A leaning post/rocket launcher enhances operator comfort when underway, in addition to offering dry stowage for lures and rigs under the seat cushion, plus four additional vertical rodholders. Either two or three fish boxes are located in the sole depending on what model you have, and there are fresh water and salt water washdowns, and a T-Top with rocket launchers. Flip-down vertical hatches allow easy access to plumbing, fuel lines and wiring. A standard T-Top offers some protection from sun and spray, in addition to an overhead rocket launcher with five rodholders. A step down head area under the console’s forward section allows semi-private accommodations when nature calls, in addition to access to the console’s critical wiring. The electric head features a Y-valve with holding tank (for those going out of U.S. jurisdiction), a freshwater sink, shower and two venting ports. The one-level casting deck area forward of the console allows anglers totally unobstructed fishability when tossing a live bait or working a big fish to boatside. Added fishbox capacity is available with a second undersole compartment with macerator pumpout, in addition to yet another deep stowage area forward for your tackle and gear. Once again, pop-up cleats in the bow combine with a recessed anchor locker to minimize any snags for your fishing line. The overall length of the Palmetto 36 is 35-and-a-half feet, supported by a nine-foot four-inch beam, for a stiletto-like profile. Combined with its deep-V bottom, she offers sustainable 40-knot plus cruising speeds offshore, even when the going gets rough. The hull of the Palmetto 360 Custom offers a unique combination of 24-ounce woven roving and multiple layers of spray core material, producing a running bottom that’s a full two-inches thick. A high-tech Nida-Core stringer grid offers long-term support with a minimum of weight, keeping overall displacement down to 6,000 pounds, backed by a 10-year hull warranty. The Palmetto ran like a champ on our test run jumping out of the hole in 5.2 seconds. Her top-end speed was 54.8 mph at 4800 rpm and her best cruise was at 43.3 mph at 4000 rpm, giving her a cruising range of 203 miles on a full tank of fuel. The Palmetto Custom is a new breed of fishboat that you’ll definitely be seeing more of on the water. She’s sleek, fast, and beautifully designed.
