The Outer Reef 580 Motoryacht has a stout displacement of 69,000 lbs. (31,298 kg) and a conservative draft of 4'10" (1.47 m). Powered by twin John Deere 6090 500-hp diesel engines with ZF transmissions, her 1,000 gallon (3,785 L) fuel capacity puts coastal and blue water cruising destinations within reach. Constructed to open Ocean Category "A," the 580 Motoryacht is designed to endure wave heights of 18’ to 20’ (5 m to 6 m) and winds of over 40 knots, making her a true blue water cruiser.
The mission of the Outer Reef 580 Motoryacht is to travel from one destination to another, providing the accommodations required for both the transit and the stay. With blue water cruising and extended periods aboard in mind, the Outer Reef 580 Motoryacht provides many of the creature comforts expected in a live aboard yacht. Her master stateroom has an athwartships king-sized bed, two additional staterooms, main deck salon living space, and full galley with domestic-sized appliances.
For those cruising sailors transitioning to power, she maintains the spirit and character of the cruising lifestyle, provides comfort, and, being under 60’ (18 m), possesses the agility to berth in almost any marina.
Exterior Inspection and Features by Function
The Outer Reef 580 Motoryacht is constructed from solid hand-laid fiberglass below the waterline with PVC core sandwiched above the waterline. Her Quiet Roll integrated spray rail system is specially designed and engineered to deflect water away from the hull. The resulting effect is a smoother and quieter motion and reduced noise at anchor.
The engine stringers are full longitudinal and athwartships length and a full length keel extends below the running gear to protect them in the event of a soft grounding. The rudders and struts are stainless steel with two Seatorque enclosed drive shaft systems. All deck and hull area hardware attachments are finished with solid lamination, no coring, and the salon windows are 3/8" tempered safety glass.
Aft and Side Decks.
Molded non-skid decking encompasses these open areas of the main deck with an integrated swim platform. There are 2" 316 stainless steel removable safety rails on the swim platform. Stairwells to both port and starboard access the aft deck through FRP gate doors from the platform.
Bench seating with Sunbrella upholstery against the transom faces forward, and there is storage beneath. Access to the salon is via FRP sliding doors with windows at the top and bottom. The 50 Amp shore power inlets are located under the bottom step from the swim platform to the aft deck along with 75' of cable provided by a Glendinning cable-master. The space is shaded by the boat deck with four heavy-duty stainless steel supports. There is a transom shower in a recessed box with both hot and cold water and deck scuppers. The space is lit with three overhead LED lights and additional two bulkhead lights. The side decks allow wheelhouse access both the port and starboard through weathertight doors and comprise two 3/8" tempered-glass windows into the salon on each side. There are four LED lights and four LED courtesy lights along the walk ways.
Also in molded non-skid decking, the foredeck hosts a forward facing bench seat just in front of the Portuguese bridge. There is a 316 stainless steel CE-approved skylight egress hatch from the VIP cabin, and there are deck lockers forward on either side of the anchor platform finished in white epoxy.
Foot switches for the Maxwell VWC-2500c anchor windlass to raise and lower the 60' plow anchor are located aft of the starboard deck locker, and there is a fresh/salt water washdown system for the chain and anchor. The 316 stainless steel rails on the bulwarks increase in width and height moving forward and are supported by 316 stainless stanchions.
Between the pilothouse and the foredeck is a Portuguese Bridge accessed by either side deck. There is an FRP hinged door with which to access the foredeck from the bridge to starboard. The bridge is lit by three LED courtesy lights. There is storage in the aft face of the bulkhead, and the deck is molded in a non-skid surface.
Flybridge and Boat Deck.
Shielded by a Venturi windscreen, the flybridge is accessed from the courtesy lit stairs from the pilothouse below. The helm is positioned on the centerline, a preference for cruisers. The molded console contains electronics, navigation, and engine controls.
There is an L-shaped settee in the port quarter of the bridge with Sunbrella furniture fabric for cushions and a table. The bridge is lit by two overhead LED lights recessed in the FRP hardtop. There are five Aquasignal navigation lights in compliance with the Navigation Rules, and a stainless steel mast housing the bow and anchor lights is mounted to the hardtop.
All additional external electronics such as radar, GPS related receivers, and optional solar panels are mounted on the hardtop, which is accessed for maintenance by a stainless steel ladder on the boat deck.
The boat deck
is molded in non-skid surface and is sizable enough to secure a comfortable tender like the center console RIB shown below. 316 stainless steel rails surround the deck and a 1,000-pound aluminum davit is mounted to port, with a four way hydraulic control, rotating base and 9'3" (2.82 m) arm allows ease in tender launch and retrieval.
The Outer Reef 580 Motoryacht comes with an interior decor allowance of $20,000, which is for the purchase and installation of interior accessories, such as cushion fabric selections, bed covering, shams, pillows, or any of the like provided by Outer Reef's in-house designer. This is a helpful feature offered by Outer Reef in preparing a new yacht for cruise ready status. Of course, owners can use their own interior designer if desired.
Main Deck Salon.
Entering the salon from the aft deck is through a sliding door. There are dual-fixed windows to port and starboard appointed by lamp sconces. The vinyl headliner is covered with teak trim battens while the bulkheads are paneled in teak as well.
The L-shaped settee is in the port quarter and has a fixed coffee table (this is an optional feature). The television is mounted in the partition between the salon and galley. All cabinetry, doors and lockers are carpentered teak and the deck is carpeted. There are six overhead LED lights, giving the salon ample illumination, and it is cooled by Cruisair air conditioning with its own zone.
Two steps up from the salon moving forward is the galley, which has full-size stainless steel appliances. Corian countertops and backsplash appoint the space with stainless under mount sinks which have a chrome Grohe Europlus II faucet with pull-out spray.
Seven LED overhead lights illuminate the area for meal preparation and serving, and like the salon, all cabinetry and carpentry finish is teak while the deck sole is teak and holly. Cabinets and utensil storage are provided above and below the countertops and have push button latches. The galley also has its own air conditioning zone. Appliances included in the galley are:
The Pilothouse is heavily appointed in teak from the deck to the paneled bulkheads and doors to all cabinetry, providing an inviting nautical feel. There is an L-shaped settee with a table aft against the bulkhead, which partitions the galley.
The helm is on the centerline, and the captain's chair is a Stidd helm seat, model 500-N. The throttles, bow thruster control, and all electronics, navigational chart displays, engine display screens, and video monitors are positioned across the main console with a navigation chart table to starboard and a table to port.
There are five overhead LED lights and two LED red night lights. All main electrical panels for AC and DC loads are located in the pilothouse, which is also cooled by its own air conditioning zone.
Accommodations Below Deck
There is a curved teak staircase from the pilothouse leading down to the lower deck accommodation spaces. It is lit with five LED courtesy lights and carpeted. Beneath the staircase is a storage area large enough to house a marine stackable washer/dryer unit.
Immediately to the left upon descending the staircase is the Outer Reef 580 Motoryacht's master stateroom. Due to her 17'2" (5.23 m) beam, the athwartship owner's cabin takes advantage of the full breadth of the yacht in order to accommodate a king sized bed with a 7" layered foam mattress.
The cabin has teak appointments and carpentry throughout. There are two hanging lockers, which also allow access to the stabilizer gear. There is drawer storage and LED rope lighting under the bed. The cabin enjoys its own thermostat, three 110-volt outlets, internal telephone outlet, TV outlet, chrome reading lights, and six LED overhead lights.
En suite to the cabin on the starboard side, the master head has a full-sized ventilated shower with a clear tempered-glass door and a Grohe Relaxa Plus chrome pulsator telephonic shower head. The lavatory countertop is Corian with a white Kohler under mounted sink and a chrome Grohe center-set single lever faucet. Beneath the sink is storage, and the head is lit with four LED overhead lights. The water closet is a Tecma marine electric flush with sanitary hose for all discharge plumbing.
Forward is the VIP guest cabin, which has a tapered queen sized bed with a 7" layered foam mattress with storage drawers beneath. There are two steps on each side of the bed for ease in access. Above the bed is the aforementioned stainless steel CE-approved skylight egress hatch. Typical to the yacht, the cabin is well-appointed in teak with two hanging lockers with teak faced doors.
Reading lamps are mounted to port and starboard on the forward bulkhead and four LED overhead lights illuminate the cabin, along with accent rope lighting under the bed. A separate thermostat, internal telephone outlet, and two 110 volt AC outlets appoint the berthing.
The VIP cabin shares a head with the guest cabin, but has its own private access. The guest head is located to starboard, just aft of the VIP cabin, and the guest head provides all of the same appointments as the master head, only smaller in size.
To port directly across from the guest head is the guest cabin, which consists of two bunk berths with 7" layered foam mattresses and storage lockers beneath the lower of the two. Two overhead LED lights and valance lighting illuminate the space, and there is an automatic interior light in the single hanging locker. This berthing is suitable for children, crew, or short term guests.
Engine Room and Mechanical Space.
With full standing headroom, the engine room of the Outer Reef 580 Motoryacht is acoustically insulated and sound-proofed. Housing two John Deere 6099 500-hp diesel engines with ZF transmissions, one Northern Lights 16 kW generator, Cruisair direct expansion air conditioning, the space is centrally located amidships for optimum balance and CG.
The Outer Reef 580 Motoryacht has a 10.7-hp Side-Power electric bow thruster with dual station control, and she has ABT Trac 220 stabilizers with fins measuring 6 sq. ft. (0.56 sq. m).
Seatorque enclosed drive shaft systems and Nibral propellers make up her running gear, and tankage includes 300 gallons (1,136 L) freshwater and 100 gallons (378 L) black water along with her 1,000 gallon (3,785 L) fuel capacity.
Performance and Handling
We have not yet tested the boat, so we can make no comment on her performance and handling.
Outer Reef's CEO, Jeff Druek, reports that the purchasers were of hull #1 of the 580 Motoryacht life-long sailors, who shopped tirelessly for the perfect powerboat to transition into.
After their extensive research, they were convinced Outer Reef checked all of their boxes, and not only would they purchase the 580 Motoryacht, they would live on her nine months out of the year.
For a cruising yacht under 60’ (18 m), the Outer Reef 580 Motoryacht should appeal to many of the cruisers. With her extended range capability, live aboard functional volume due to her wide beam, and ability to enter just about any marina, the 580 Motoryacht appears to satisfy those common priorities of cruising sailors ready to move solely to power.
