Brief Summary
The Ranger 2510 Bay Ranger is a fully-loaded bay boat built to Ranger's exceptional standards of durability and finish according to our test captain. She's 24'7" (7.49 m) long and 102'' (2.59 m) wide, rated for outboards to 300 horsepower thanks in part to her all-composite, extra strong "Pultruded" transom. Captain's Report
Overview
The new flagship in Ranger’s Salt-water Series boat line-up is the 2510 Bay Ranger, this top-end model features everything a serious angler wants and needs in a bay boat. Although she’s geared for shallow water fishing, her length and stout construction will be able to traverse most near shore waters with confidence. The boat also provides owners with plush, convertible seating at the aft cockpit and a full-size head compartment for enjoying the vessel with friends on cruise days. The 2510 we tested included some optional equipment and available upgrades. To see the full roster of standard features, visit www.rangerboats.com.
Features Inspection
The Bow.
Up front, the bow provides a raised casting deck with high toe rails and good working room for two anglers. The deck’s sole includes four large compartments for the day’s gear in addition to a dedicated anchor locker all the way forward. The folks at Ranger are very proud of these deck lockers and they should be. For starters, two 9’ long rod lockers flank the port and starboard sides. These secure storage units feature a clever ventilation system using small fans to scavenge the moist air out of the boxes in order to keep expensive gear at its best.
The center console houses a day head equipped with a portable toilet and a privacy door designed to offer additional space within. The front of the compartment’s hatch features a comfortable console seat with padded backrest.
The Helm
is purposefully laid-out with a pair of 10” multi-function displays situated in the center of the dash. A bank of accessory switches with re-settable breakers occupies the space above the monitors and gives the dash a clean look. The top portion of the dash provides a large, flat, rubberized surface for placing constantly used items like cell phones or binoculars which we found to be very useful. Electronic, binnacle mount engine controls and a tilt, stainless steel wheel with knob, eases the pilot’s vessel control. The 2510 Bay Ranger is fitted with a 12” hydraulic jack-plate for skinny water with the plate’s control switch mounted to the steering column for quick adjustment.
The helm seats are fitted to the forward section of the livewell console and offer supportive seating for two with its flip-up bolster pads and moveable armrest on the port and starboard sides. A recessed foot well in the helm console provides occupants with a place to rest their feet. The entire center console is protected from the sun with a large, fiberglass-molded hardtop that features built-in speakers, spreader lights, and courtesy lights. The frame for the top is built from large diameter aluminum tubing and integrates some of the best handholds and rocket launchers we’ve seen to date.
The aft portion of the cockpit provides the boat’s livewell, bait prep area and elevated casting platform. Numerous rod holders are situated in the gunnel caps as well as the T-top’s rocket launchers. The most impressive part of the cockpit is the concealed, flip-up seat stowed in the casting deck. A heavy-duty fiberglass hatch reveals the comfortable seating for two, while a second hatch below the seat bottom cushions access the boat’s self-draining 320-quart fishbox. A transom hatch at the stern gives quick access to all the 2510 Bay Ranger’s pumps and strainers for simple servicing.
Power
Our 2510 Bay Ranger came rigged with the new Evinrude E-TEC G2 300-horsepower, 2-stroke outboard. This direct-injected power plant comes with a beefier gear case, electronic controls and a revolutionary mounting bracket that eliminates the power steering rack cylinder. Instead, the new sealed, hydraulic rotary actuator does all the work, and is controlled electronically for improved feedback and simplified operation.
Performance
Our test of the 2510 Bay Ranger took place on a cold day in Florida aboard the 24’7” center console bay boat. Loaded with 50 gallons (189 L) of fuel in the tank and two people we had an overall test weight of 4,950 lbs. (2,245 kg). Weather and seas were calm with a slight chop. Nailing the throttle we got on plane in 4.5 seconds and arrived at 30 mph in 6.8 seconds. Optimal cruise speed was found at 3500 rpm and resulted in a 4.03 miles per gallon or 7.7 gallons an hour. Wide-open throttle resulted in a top speed of 51.0 mph, burning 24.25 gallons per hour.
Handling
The overall handling of the 2510 Bay Ranger was solid and responsive, but because this is a bay boat with a shallow V-bottom, high-speed turns require some attention. Hard over turns cause the running surface to slide through the maneuver rather than carve it, much like other boats in her class. The advanced auto trim (i-Trim) function provided by the Evinrude ICON electronic controls, manages the trim setting for the pilot so their focus can be on other tasks. The 2510 Bay Ranger is also equipped with a pair of 12” X 12” trim tabs, but unlike so many other boats we’ve tested, we found no need to use them as the boat provided good attitude when properly loaded.
