Captain's Report
Stratos 176 XTBy Capt. Bob Smith
The representatives from Stratos were really pumped about the three boats they brought and especially excited about the 176 XT. Why? Because they are introducing a boat that gets the everyday bass angler a high quality, all composite bass rig that retails under $13,000!
Bow Features
The 176 XT is 100% composite construction with no wood. The front deck offers 28 square feet of space to work the fish. A Minn Kota Edge 40 lb 36” 12 volt trolling motor is mounted high on the port gunwale. The trolling motor has a fixed position foot pedal in the center of the peak and an engine tilt switch located in a panel in the bow. Stratos mounts the cleats on recesses to keep the top snag-free. Bow storage is great for a boat its size and featuring two matching boxes are on either side. There is also plenty of rod storage up here. The center bow locker boasts room for up to 12 rods.
At the Helm
The center cockpit is arranged for great legroom for you and your buddy. The modular fiberglass helm has no-feedback steering with a three-spoke wheel. Analog speed, tach and fuel gauges are standard as well as a Lowrance X-50DS depth finder. Over on the right side, lighted rocker control switches are protected by push-button circuit breakers. The driver’s drinkholder is tucked into the corner next to their seat on the side wall. Over on the buddy side is a handy four-rod running rack with reel protective pad, bungee strap, and a drinkholder. A small storage compartment is located under the center seat of the three-across fold-down seats.
More Fishing Features
Its an easy step up to the spacious rear casting deck which has 20 square feet of room. More storage is also located back here in matching dry boxes on either side. Plano style boxes store vertically in these boxes and Stratos even gives you some to start organizing your lures. Across the center is a divided aerated livewell with timer. Access to the equipment is through a beam-width hatch across the aft section of the stern. The cranking battery is stored on the starboard side with an oil reservoir location next to it. Access to the 800 bilge pump and livewell pump is in the center with the trolling motor battery and on board charger over on the right. The main breakers are also located on the port side.
Boat Specifications
The 176 XT measures 17’6” length overall with a beam width of 84”. On the trailer, she is 18’10” long with a width of 95”. She carries 23 gallons of fuel and can handle up to an 75-hp outboard engine.
I tested the 176 XT on an inland lake with two people on board. She has smooth acceleration and a mostly dry ride. The 70-hp Yamaha delivered good torque and speed. She is on plane in 4.6 seconds and up to 30 mph in 13 seconds. The 176 cruised most economically at 29.4 mph turning 4500 rpm. At cruise, she can deliver 123 miles on a full tank of fuel. She managed a top speed of 36.5 mph which was really pretty good for just a 70-hp outboard engine.
If you are looking to get into chasing bass but don’t want to be chased by the bank, check out the Stratos 176XT. She has great performance, all composite construction and a low entry price.
