Captain's Report

Captain’s Report by Capt. Mark Kellum

Greenline 45

The first impression of the Greenline 45 Fly is a conventional flybridge yacht. However, Greenline’s approach to sustainable yachting creates several functional and design innovations.

View

The latest model for Greenline, the 45 Fly has a large Bimini over the flybridge and a second Bimini over the forward sun pad. An optional T-top adds additional solar panels.

Mission

The Greenline 45 Fly was designed, engineered, and built to provide a sustainable yachting experience with full featured interior spaces for luxurious comfort. Large windows in the salon and galley along with hull side windows and cutouts in the forward bulwark make the interior bright and airy. The flybridge deck is designed for entertaining and provides overhead protection for the aft deck. Overall, the Greenline 45 Fly is devised for extended voyaging and entertaining in style.

Starboard side cruising

The test Greenline 45 Fly was equipped with twin 370-horsepower Yanmar diesels with V-drives.

Distinguishing Features

  • Two 300-amp solar panels molded into the coach roof that supply power to the battery banks. The solar power management system and 3-kilowatt inverter help eliminate frequent need of shorepower.
  • Standard, the Greenline 45 Fly has a walk-in master stateroom and VIP stateroom closets with vanities, hanging lockers, and shelves. The test boat had the guest cabin option that replaces both walk-in closets.

Major Features

  • Hydraulically-Actuated Swim Platform. The swim platform lowers for water access.
  • Full-Beam Master Stateroom. The full-beam master stateroom has large hull side windows with opening portlights and a private en-suite head with separate shower.
  • VIP Forward Stateroom. The forward VIP stateroom has a centerline berth and private access to the day-head with separate shower.
  • Standard Sized Mattress Berths. The mattresses in the master stateroom are standard king-sized and the VIP stateroom offers a standard queen-sized mattress that allows the owner to use standard fitting sheets and bedding.
  • Full Galley. The galley is equipped with home-like appliances including a full-size refrigerator/freezer, a conventional oven with microwave and convection, and an induction cooktop.
  • Toy Storage. Under the aft deck is space for toy storage accessed through the aft deck transom bench seating. Optionally, the transom can open for additional access.
  • Forward Sun Pad. The forward sun pad has a Bimini top and can convert to side-by-side lounge seating.
  • Large Flybridge Deck. L-shaped bench seating aft complements the sun pad alongside the port side upper helm.

Upper level layout

The design of the Greenline 45 Fly places the upper helm on the port side just forward of the stairs from the aft deck.

Maindeck layout

The main deck on the Greenline 45 Fly has the galley between the aft deck and the salon. This makes entertaining both inside and out easier.

Stateroom layout

The configuration for the Greenline 45 Fly has walk-in closets for both the master and VIP staterooms and private en-suite head with separate showers.

Lower level layout

This optional configuration moves the VIP stateroom door forward, allowing access to the forward head from the lower companionway.

Berthing layout

The third configuration eliminates the walk-in closets to make a third cabin with either upper and lower single berths or a single double berth (the test boats configuration).

Design

Bimini top

With both Bimini tops lowered, the Greenline 45 Fly takes on a sleeker look.

Optional Propulsion. The Greenline 45 Fly is available with twin 320-horsepower Yanmar diesels, twin 370-horsepower Yanmar diesels, twin Volvo Penta IPS500 diesels, twin Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels, hybrid propulsion with twin 200-horsepower Volvo Penta D3 diesels or fully electric propulsion with twin 100-kilowatt inboard Torqeedo electric drives.

Two Separate Hull Designs. To efficiently and properly support the various propulsion systems performance, Greenline designed two separate hull configurations. A tunnel design that accommodates the shaft driven props and a non-tunnel drive that accommodates the Volvo Penta IPS drives.

Performance

The Greenline 45 Fly that was tested featured dual Yanmar 370-horsepower diesels with V-drives and the Greenline 45 Fly prop-tunnel hull design.

The Greenline 45 Fly has a length overall of 51’1” (15.57 m) and a beam of 14’11" (4.55 m). With a dry weight of 29,762 lbs. (13,500 kg)), half the fuel capacity, and four people onboard, we had an estimated test weight of 31,752 lbs. (14,402 kg).

Top Speed. With the dual 370-horsepower Yanmar diesels with V-drives run up to 3750 rpm, the Greenline 45 Fly reached a top speed of 23-knots. With a total of 740-horsepower, Greenline is not going for high-speeds with this setup. They are going for cruising comfort.

Best Cruise. Running at 3200 rpm and 18.5-knots the test Greenline 45 Fly has a range of 245.1 nautical miles. This seems to be where the test boat felt most comfortable. To cover more distance, running at 2200 rpm and just under 10-knots stretches the range. At this speed, the 11.3 gph fuel burn provides 0.9 nautical miles per gallon and a range of 313.6 nautical miles. Running the Greenline at 1250 rpm and 6.3-knots the range is a respectable 1118.0 nautical miles.

0 to Plane. The test Greenline 45 Fly reached planning speed in 7.2 seconds.

0 to 20 MPH. The test Greenline 45 Fly reached 20 mph in an average of 11.3 seconds.

Handling

Calm test conditions

At 23-knots, the Greenline 45 Fly’s top speed in calm test conditions, she rode solid as any boat in her class would.

A lot of the Greenline 45 Fly’s driving comfort comes from the responsiveness of the helm. At cruise speeds it is even more pronounced, due to more wash against the rudders. The Greenline demonstrated a gentle 9-degree roll into the turns, ensuring nothing will get tossed around.

side door

The test captain on the Greenline 45 Fly found the frame for the side door to be a bit too-low. However, the convenience outweighed the distraction.

Close-in Maneuvering. In low-speed, close-in maneuvering, the Greenline 45 Fly performed as expected for a well-handled yacht. The test captain found that whatever maneuvering was needed the Greenline 45 Fly was able to respond perfectly.

Boat Inspection

Observations

The Greenline 45 Fly is exceptionally comfortable and ergonomic, as every space offered has roomy areas to move about. Everything was carefully thought out and designed to accommodate large groups on board in multiple gathering areas. One important consideration, whether at the dock or on the hook, the entire yacht’s electrical system can be run off of the boats 600-amp of battery power, running through an inverter, and recharging through the dual 300-watt solar panels… refrigeration, air conditioning, lighting…. Everything.

The Greenline 45 Fly available in either shaft drive or hybrid drive to run on electric power. And for those who want speed as opposed to efficiency, the Greenline 45 Fly is also available with Volvo Penta IPS drives, so it’s all about choices. The Greenline 45 Fly clearly deliverers for those customers looking to make their boat truly their own.
