Regal 33 XO:

Twin Outboard-Powered Cruiser

Regal 33 XO
An electrically-actuated fold-down tower adds a styling element to the Regal 33 XO, one of the few expresses in class with outboard-power.

Outboard power on the Regal 33 XO frees up a large amount of cockpit space for dayboat entertaining, as well as allowing robust lazarette storage and room for a generator. The ability to trim up gives access to shallows that are a challenge in inboards, and modern outboards also allow for easier maintenance. She has dedicated berths for four and can sleep up to six.

Hampton Yachts 650:

World-Class Cruising Yacht

Hampton Yachts 650
A sharp forward entry, lots of freeboard, and plenty of bow flair all help keep green water off of the luxurious Hampton 650 pilothouse.

The Hampton 650 is distinguished by its lavish use of wood, fine joinery work, and world-class equipment and installations, all at a very competitive price for the genre. A 1,200-pound (544 kg) capacity davit is standard on the flying bridge, and the bridge can be reached via stairs both from the salon and the aft deck. Standard layout includes three ensuites forward plus a large lazarrette aft fitted out for storage, but the lazarette can be outfitted for optional crew quarters.

The Cruisers Yachts 60 Cantius offers two spacious ensuites in the standard layout, and a third can be added optionally. The two staterooms are separated by a common area below deck that includes the companionway to the main deck and a well-lighted 14' (4.28 m) high atrium. Shallow Sport 25 X3:

9.5" Draft & 300-hp
Evinrude E-TEC G2

Shallow Sport 25 X3 (w/ 1 x 300-hp Evinrude E-TEC G2)
The elevated console of the Shallow Sport 25 X3 gives the skipper a good view into the shallows ahead, while a draft of just 9.5" (24.1 cm) means she can run exceptionally shallow.

The Shallow Sport 25 X3 is a dedicated flats boat designed for pursuit of redfish and other inshore species typically found in shallow backwaters. It comes standard with a 6" (15.2 cm) jackplate to hike the Evinrude 300-hp E-TEC G2 to maximum height, allowing the boat to ease over the shallowest shoals. And, unlike most extreme flats boats, the tri-hull design allows for a 9' (2.74 m) beam, adding extra deck space both fore and aft.

The VIP stateroom at the bow includes skylights, while all accommodations below deck are well-lighted by large hullside windows.

TRACKER® Targa™ V-20 WT:

All-Welded .125” Heavy Gauge Hull

Tracker Targa V-20 WT
With a 102" (2.59 m) beam and swivel fishing seats forward and aft, the Targa V-20 WT is well set-up for three anglers fishing big, windswept northern lakes or coastal bays.

TRACKER’s 2017 Targa V-20 WT is the largest welded aluminum boat in the builder’s line-up. With a hull thickness of .125", she should offer excellent abrasion resistance for beaching on pebbly or sandy shores. She has plenty of cockpit depth and high windshields helping to keep her dry in rough going, and the Deep V deadrise -- 35 degrees at bow and 20 degrees at transom -- eases the ride. The standard package includes a tandem axle trailer with Galvashield™ Impact powder-coat finish.

She's available in two- or three-stateroom layouts and with pod or sterndrive propulsion.

Formula 290 Bowrider:

Twin V8s in a Premium-Level
Bowrider

Formula 290 Bowrider
Sleek sportboat lines and a gleaming painted finish are among the hallmarks of the Formula 290 Bowrider.

The Formula 290 Bowrider ran 53.0 mph in our tests, powered with twin 320-hp MerCruiser 377 MAGs. For those who want even more speed, power options to twin 430-hp sterndrives are available. The innovative swim platform ladder is a three-part fold-down unit, making reboarding far easier than with the standard vertical ladder. Her 22-degree deadrise at the transom and 10,000-pound (4,536 kg) weight smooth the ride compared to most bowriders, according to our test captain.

Comparison

Compare 6 Express Cruisers from 35' to 38'

35’-38’ Express Cruisers

35’-38’ Express Cruisers

On the left is the Beneteau Gran Turismo 35; at just over 11,000-pound (4,990 kg) displacement, she is the lightest of the six boats we compared. The Cruisers Yachts 38 Express on the right, at 20,000 lbs. (9,072 kg), is the heaviest. Needless to say, there is a world of difference among these boats. Which one is best for you?

Express cruisers in the mid-30s are the most popular size of the type because they are so versatile and relatively affordable. They are big enough to take to the Bahamas, yet small enough that virtually every marina has a slip that will fit. Most of the boats sleep four comfortably and six in a pinch by converting the dining settee. Look at comparison numbers, see the videos, and read the reports.

World Cat’s all-new 280CC-X is a center console designed to combine the ride attributes of an offshore catamaran with outstanding fishability and more luxurious appointments that make the boat attractive for cruising. Her moderate 7,300-pound (3,311 kg) weight allows her to run well on twin 200s, keeping fuel usage to a minimum for the genre and extending range at cruising speeds. She's also an attractive boat, unlike some cats, thanks to her sweeping sheerline, tumblehome aft, and striking bow treatment.

Boat Buying Tips:

Go Light, or Go Heavy?

Boat Buying Tips
Formula's 353 FASTech is light -- 9,500 lbs. (4,309 kg), roughly -- and fast. In our test, the 353 hit 70 knots, powered by twin 525-hp Mercury Racing sterndrives. Boats like this have to be light to meet the buyers’ expectations for high speed.

Checking the specs of boats in any class will show a range of weights -- "displacements" in naval-architect terms -- among models that appear similar in other respects. Displacement is an important factor that buyers should consider when boat-shopping. Is it better for a boat to be lighter or heavier? You may find our answers surprising. Read on to find out.
