Schaefer Yachts 580 Fly:
“Stick Steering” in a Luxury Yacht

Schaefer Yachts 580 Fly
Schaefer Yachts 580 Fly

The Schaefer Yachts 580 Fly, the world's first production yacht with a joystick replacing the steering wheel at the main helm, delivers performance and handling similar to other yachts of about the same LOA, features, and power, but the joystick operation simply makes her more fun. She’s powered by the Volvo Penta IPS system with the joystick-steering option, which allows her to make sharper turns than with the conventional wheel found on the flying bridge. With twin Volvo Penta 625-hp IPS800s, she planed in 9 seconds in our tests and had a top speed of 30.0 knots. Best range is achieved at 2000 rpm and 20.8 knots, at which she consumed 41.5 gph for a range of about 262 NM with her 555-gallon (2,101 L) fuel capacity. As with most IPS-powered boats, we found little variation in fuel consumption from about 1750 rpm on up to WOT. More...

Boston Whaler 190 Montauk:
Redesigned Classic CC

Boston Whaler 190 Montauk
Boston Whaler 190 Montauk

The Boston Whaler 190 Montauk retains the same eye appeal of her classic forbears, but she has an improved bottom design to deliver a softer and drier ride as well as numerous upgrades to interior comforts and features. She weighs in at just over 3,131 lbs. (1,420 kg) loaded, so she’s easily trailered on the standard galvanized tandem-axle trailer. The modest weight also delivers good performance, with the optional 150-hp Mercury FourStroke planing her in just 3.3 seconds — a big plus for watersports. Top speed was 46.9 mph in our tests and best cruise was 25.9 mph, at which she got 5.3 mpg for a range of about 285 SM. More...

Jeanneau NC 1095:
Quiet Cruising in an OB-Powered Weekender

Jeanneau 1095
Jeanneau NC 1095

The Jeanneau NC 1095 can fit an optional third stateroom within her 34'5" (10.49 m) LOA - in part because she is outboard-powered, which opens up interior space. The relatively light (compared to I/O) twin 300-hp Yamaha 4-strokes also put her on plane in just 3.9 seconds and pushed her to a top speed of 40.2 mph. The best cruise was measured at 4000 rpm and 26.1 mph, at which the 22.4 gph fuel burn translated into 1.2 mpg and a range of 222 statute miles. The outboards delivered their power quietly, just 81 dB at the helm at cruising speed. More...

Rinker 270 EX:
Trailerable Express Sleeps 4

Rinker 270 EX
Rinker 270 EX

The Rinker 270 EX is a big boat for trailering with a 28’10” (8.78 m) LOA and a weight of over 7,000 lbs. (3,175 kg) dry. With today’s full-sized trucks and multi-axle trailers to handle the over-the-road duties, she makes it possible for the family to visit distant waterways and in effect use her as a camper on the water. She has an electric cooktop, sink, and a 2-cubic-foot (.056 cu. m) refrigerator as well as a microwave in the galley. The dining table seats four and seating here converts quickly to sleep two. The wet head is just to starboard, while amidships is a sleeping cabin large enough for two adults. There’s an added dining area in the cockpit, along with a second sink and cooler storage. More...
