A Report on BoatTEST:
The BoatTEST Story

BoatTEST
As BoatTEST approaches its 20th year reviewing boats with professional captains with videos and in-depth reports, it's time for some reflection.

With 3,000 boats tested in nearly 20 years, BoatTEST has become perhaps the most copied website in the marine industry with people making boating review videos all over the world. Some of them even call themselves “boat test” and sign off with “See you on the water.” It is true that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, but the copycats have never quite learned the formula for BoatTEST’s secret sauce. In a massive survey of our readers last year, BoatTEST was voted “most influential” when buying a new boat by 88% of our readers; builder websites ranked 53%, and boating magazines ranked 28%. But, that’s only part of the story. More...

Wellcraft 182 Fisherman:
High Freeboard/Competitively Priced

Wellcraft 182 Fisherman
Wellcraft 182 Fisherman

The Wellcraft 182 Fisherman is an unusually deep center console considering her 18’2” (5.54 m) LOA and 8’ (2.44 m) beam – note the freeboard seen here. This allows her to act as a family dayboat for a surprising crowd – she’s rated to carry eight. A canvas T-top is an option most will probably want and it can easily be removed to fit the boat into the family garage. Flip-up aft jump seats are a good spot for the kids to ride and they become part of the aft casting platform when folded down. An upholstery package turns the front casting platform into a sun lounge. She is competitively priced. More...

Riviera 39 Sports Motor Yacht:
Shallow Draft Flybridge Cruiser

Riviera 39 Sports Motor Yacht
Riviera 39 Sports Motor Yacht

The bow pulpit of the Riviera 39 Sports Motor Yacht is standard, not only adding an extension for the standard anchor roller but also giving her a bit of a styling touch. A Muir electric windlass is also standard. Note the height of the bow railings shown here. Also, this photo gives a look at the underwater portion of the yacht. She draws a modest 3’9” (1.14 m), encouraging owners to go exploring into secluded coves and hidden anchorages. She’s available both in the flybridge model shown here and in an “SUV” version without the upper command/entertainment area. More...

Yamaha SX195:
Supercharged Muscle for Exciting Performance

Yamaha SX195
Yamaha SX195

Pushed by the powerful 1812cc 1.8 Liter Super Vortex High Output supercharged and intercooled four-stroke, which is the largest PWC engine made by the company, the Yamaha SX195 has plenty of juice for tow sports as well as delivering an exhilarating ride for up to eight guests – top speed in our tests was 52.3 mph. The low profile of the engine allows for easy pass-through to the “aft patio” – Yamaha's signature two-level swim platform/seating area on the transom of all its jet boats. Dual gas struts hold the hatch cover out of the way to allow easy daily maintenance checks and another hatch aft allows access to the impeller to clean out grass or debris as needed. More...

World Cat 280CC-X:
Redundant Power Systems for Offshore Security

World Cat 280 CC-X
World Cat 280CC-X

One of the many appealing features of the World Cat 280CC-X as an offshore fishing boat is her independent power systems. The Yamaha 200 outboards have separate fuel and battery connections, so if things go wrong on one side, anglers can still get home on the other. And, as Captain Steve discovered in our tests, you won’t limp home either. She can get on plane on one engine and take you home at about 20 mph. Of course, the widely-separated engines take full advantage of the 9’2” (2.8 m) beam to provide easy control around the docks. More...

Prestige 590:
Redesigned to Suit the Customer

Prestige 590
Prestige 590

The redesigned Prestige 590 features lots of improvements, many suggested by customers, including the now-huge aft deck sun lounge/seating area. The center cushion here flips up to form a backrest for seating at the table, which itself folds out to suit six or more diners. A 6’8” (2.03 m) extension of the hardtop provides shade here, along with an extendable power canvas sunshade. A small refrigerator for chilled drinks is just a step away. More...

Jeanneau/Prestige Parts Facility:
Computerized Warehousing for Efficient Construction

uscg report
Jeanneau/Prestige Parts Facility

The Jeanneau/Prestige Global Parts Facility in France is a massive warehouse where all of the specified parts for a particular yacht ordered by a buyer anywhere in the world are located. Computerized “pick sheets” allow workers to quickly assemble all of the parts needed and deliver them to the manufacturing section of the factory where they’re put into place, often within hours. The same system allows quick, efficient replacement of parts when ordered by a dealer. All of the parts on every yacht, except the hull, superstructure and the engines, come from this facility.
