Evinrude iDock:
Lowest-Cost Joystick on the Market

Evinrude iDock
Evinrude iDock

All outboard engines cost about the same in any given horsepower, give or take a few hundred dollars. But what does not cost the same are their joystick systems. When these systems first came out they were expensive, and obviously the companies involved had spent millions on R&D which needed to be recouped. But over the years the prices didn’t drop much because boat owners have been so eager to have easy docking they were willing to pay $14,000 or more for them. Now, Evinrude sells its Joystick system for $5,999. When these savings are added to a pair of high-hp engines, Evinrude beats all of the 4-strokes, hands down, on price. We’ve tested them, and they are just as good as the others, and have better features than some. More...

Cruisers Yachts 42 Cantius:
Maximizing Entertaining Space

Cruisers Yachts 42 Cantius
Cruisers Yachts 42 Cantius

The new Cruisers Yachts 42 Cantius welcomes cookouts with an optional outdoor kitchen across her transom, including sink, storage, and cooktop. It’s an option because not everyone wants to be grilling, but for those who do it adds a lot of utility to a 42’ boat for not much added cost. A hydraulic option is available for the swim platform, as is synthetic teak decking. She sleeps four in two staterooms belowdecks. More...

Chaparral 277 SSX:
50.8 MPH WOT w/350-hp Sterndrive

Chaparral 277 SSX
Chaparral 277 SSX

The Chaparral 277 SSX powered by a 350-hp MerCruiser 6.2 L sterndrive reminds us that there is still a lot of juice left in this mode of power. Going 50 mph with the drag of a towing arch and a Bimini top up is pretty good performance. What’s more, the 277 SSX has a 22-degree deadrise at the transom, giving a better ride than a flatter-bottomed boat. Towing enthusiasts will like the wide, unencumbered stern from which to lauch watersports and no worry about an outboard engine in the way. More...

Sea Ray L590 Fly:
Unusual Master Stateroom

Sea Ray L590 Fly
Sea Ray L590 Fly

The Sea Ray L590 has one of the most innovative master staterooms on the market. Its diagonal bed to starboard and L-shaped couch seating to port makes for an open and fun master, as opposed to the squared off layouts we usually see. The master has a separate water closet, something we rarely see on a boat of any size, in addition to a walk-in shower. More...

RANGER® Z519L:
Power Ventilation for Rod Storage

RANGER Z519L
RANGER® Z519L

Ranger's Comanche-level 19-footer grew longer and received L Series upgrades for 2019. But perhaps the most innovative aspect is its Power Ventilated Rod Storage, which Ranger calls PVRS™ for short. A special blower circulates air over as many as 20 rods as long as 8 feet (2.44 m) long. Digital switches on the console provide well-defined control of all the boat’s systems. She also has a remote drain plug, so now there is no excuse for leaving it out. More...

Float Plans Save Lives

Safety Tip of the Day
The adventure of setting off for new destinations is exciting, but certain steps should always be taken every time a boater leaves the dock.

A float plan can simplify the process of getting a search underway if a boat doesn’t turn up when she’s expected. Getting search parties active as quickly as possible in the right direction can mean the difference between life and death. Knowing what information to put on a float plan is the first step. It sounds Boy Scout, but in fact float plans are a good idea for everyone, particularly people going offshore, not just for kids. Read about how and why to do it...
