Small cruisers are well suited for transitioning from a bowrider to a cruising boat. As they often have twin engines, they are actually easier to dock than single-engine sterndrives, and there’s little to the learning curve. It’s also easy to accommodate the upgrade to additional systems, such as the plumbing for the head and running water, and the added amenities that shore power can bring.And now, boating isn’t just about running around, always within reach of the dock, or running the bow up on a beach. Now, boating is more about both the trip and the destination. Cruise the Intracoastal for a day and see where the boundaries of time will end. Then the next day, or the day after, cruise back on the outside to get home at the end of the weekend. Nearly every coastal area has a distant island within cruising range. Now, it’s within reach of the weekend and the owners have a place to stay once they arrive.
Camping is Fun, but Comfort is Better.
With the Regal 30 Express, the foray into the horizon comes with a level of fit-and-finish worthy of this respected builder. Her comfort level is a cut above thanks to the beta testing of actual boaters for perfecting the ergonomics. And as for functionality, Regal is among the top tier of creativity in design, so a seat is never just a seat, it’s often a chameleon of changes from one function to another.
Major Standard Features
Regal is big on including standard features where other’s relegate to options just to keep the price down. Yes, a Regal costs a bit more, but the company knows that if a customer is buying a Regal, then these are some of the options that are expected. It’s all part of the Regal experience.

Each and every one of these items comes standard on the Regal 30 Express, and many are on the options lists for many competing boats. This list of standards, we think, catapults the Regal 30 Express into a premium level boat that commands a higher price.
Boarding is from the standard extended swim platform and we like how the forward trim of the platform integrates with the topsides ahead. Standard decking is fiberglass treated with a diamond pattern non-skid. For an added touch of class, add Flexiteek decking ($2,080), which gives the look of a wood deck without the maintenance or heat buildup from the onslaught of the sun.
The Cockpit Encompasses Seating Both to the Port Side and Across the Stern.
To port, an aft facing lounge allows reclining in the chaise configuration while watching the wake shrinking in the distance. Of course, just like the chaise at home, it also serves well when facing sideways and conversing with the operator at the helm. Further aft there’s a forward facing seat, so now we have two people facing each other, and both can put their feet up and relax.
Now as we move to the aft seating
, things get interesting. Both the aft lounge seat and the full aft seat have flip seatbacks so they can be configured in multiple positions. We can have all seats facing forward, all facing aft, booth style seating, and of course all the seatbacks can lay flat to form a large sun pad.
Across to the Starboard Side is a Standard Refreshment Center.
It includes a sink, plumbed to the boat’s 35-gallon (132.5 L) water tank, stainless steel drink holders, dedicated storage for a carry-on cooler, and counter space for food prep. A cockpit refrigerator ($1,325) is offered as an option, but keep in mind that this requires either a generator or shore power to provide the electricity.
The entire cockpit deck is fully fiberglass
lined for easy washdowns. Snap-in cockpit carpeting is standard and it will come in a color that matches the upholstery selected when ordering, either Gulf Coast White, Platinum two-tone, or Boca Raton two-tone. An upgrade to Seagrass matting is also available ($830). A Fusion stereo with Bluetooth functionality will allow anyone to be able to control the music selection.

not only add to the ambiance, but also allow for a comfortable and safe environment long after the sun sets. At the end of the day, the cockpit can be protected by an optional cockpit cover ($1,315), an ideal scenario when storing in a slip or rack room.

Fully forward there’s an available option for an anchor windlass ($3,305). However, a 12-lb. Danforth-type anchor and 15’ of 3/8’’ chain should be adequate ground tackle and is not too heavy to lift aboard. While on the subject of overnighting at anchor, we’d also consider adding underwater lights ($705) to draw in all sort of underwater friends to the party.
For the helm, Regal chose an earth tone to eliminate any concerns for glare, plus it makes a handsome looking helm. All Faria gauges are non-fogging and include black faces with chromed bezels. The hand-wrapped steering wheel is standard and mounted to a tilt base. Throttles are mounted to a separate quadrant to the right side.
As we make our way down to the cabin, one of the first things we appreciate is the sliding screen door. This will allow flow through ventilation at night without giving boarding permission to every bug in the harbor. Directly ahead is U-shaped seating wrapping around a pedestal table. A modest galley is to starboard, a head compartment is to port. As expected, the forward dining area easily converts to a berth, and a standard privacy curtain will separate the sleeping area from the main cabin. A cedar-lined hanging locker is to the port side, directly adjacent to the head.
The first set of decisions made during the purchase experience regarding the cabin include up to four patterns for pillows, a Dawn or Pearl comforter, and either the Leather Touch upholstery or King Sand fabric upholstery. All included in the standard pricing.
A mid cabin is located aft
that is completely taken up with a queen-sized berth. For a cruising couple, this makes a dedicated bed and the forward serves as a dining area/salon. The entry to the mid-cabin is wide enough to not give the feel of climbing into a cave and a curtain provides privacy.
The fit-and-finish becomes even more evident
as we look at the custom made cabinetry with Cherry finish. Decking is Amtico, which has the look of teak but none of the maintenance. Plus it’s a lot more durable, especially when it gets wet. All upholstery is LeatherCrest that has the look and feel of the real thing, but like the Amtico decking, it’s much easier to maintain. Additionally, Regal goes above and beyond in its quest to provide ample natural light into this area, virtually eliminating any hint of the cave-like feeling of some others we’ve seen.
The galley features the bulk of the cherry finished cabinetry. A microwave, refrigerator, and single burner electric stove are provided as standard. The cooktop is recessed eliminating the need for adding fiddles to hold pots in place. The countertop is fitted with a raised edge to keep items from sliding off.
An alcohol/electric stove is offered as an option ($225). This allows for cooking without having to use either the generator or shore power to provide electricity. Regal allows for the choice of up to three different color/pattern options for the galley countertops at no additional charge: Horizon, Radiant Shimmer, or Whippoorwill.
Entertainment can come from
the standard Fusion stereo, but Regal also offers an upgrade to a high performance package ($1,055) that adds 780 watts plus a 400-watt kicker. A flatscreen TV with DVD player ($1,575) may serve to keep the kids occupied while the adults are on deck.
The head to starboard is a “wet-head” layout with the sink having a pullout sprayer for conversion to a shower. Regal includes an electric flush head as standard. It’s a lot quieter than the VacuFlush models we typically see. This will be plumbed into an 18-gallon (68L) holding tank where the effluent will be held pending dockside pumpout. Regal offers an overboard discharge ($975) but pump-out stations are so readily available, and this isn’t an ocean crossing yacht, so we’d have to say “shame” on the buyer that selects this.
Power, Pricing, and Remaining Options
There are three power choices for the Regal 30 Express. There’s the twin
Volvo Penta V6-200s turning DP drives that brings the boat to a base price of $158,140. Next up, twin
MerCruiser 4.5L turning B3 outdrives have the boat starting at $170,625. Finally, at the top of the power options are the twin
Volvo Penta V6-225 which will bring the base price up to $163,210.
As of this writing, two big items on the options list are being offered free
, a generator (normally $14,155) and air conditioning (normally $3,725). That’s $7,880 worth of free goods, and these are important components. With the generator, there’s always a supply of 110V power available and the benefits of using it to power the air conditioning are self-evident. Now we don’t have to be constrained to shore power when on trips. A night on the hook is a lot more attractive and a lot less costly. Bottom line…. For any buyers who may be on the fence about purchasing this boat, this should be just the incentive needed to pull the trigger.
Hull color is probably the most agonized option on the list. White is free, well actually it’s called Tahiti Beach, but it’s white. Seven different boot stripe colors can also be chosen at no additional cost. Adding either of the six custom colors to the topsides will tack on another $1,070 and we think it is worth every penny.
Colors aside, with the options we’ve mentioned in this report, we’d be adding another $16,190 to the base price of the standard Regal 30 Express.
The transition to a cruising boat can often be a journey of trepidation. With a smaller boat, the crossover to this new realm of boating can be an easy one. But being small doesn’t have to equate with being cut-rate. Small can also come with some fine amenities and a premium level of fit-and-finish. Such is the realm of the Regal 30 Express.
