All fuel consumption numbers are the total for all engines in the boat. Speeds are measured with Stalker ProSports radar gun or GPS. Fuel consumption (gallons per hour) measured with Floscan digital fuel-flow meter or by on-board factory-installed diagnostic instruments. Range is based on 90% of published fuel capacity. Sound levels determined using Radio Shack digital decibel meter on A scale. 68 dBA is the level of normal conversation. We think they continue to hit their mark with the model that has proved popular with fishing families and anglers for nearly a decade.
Rear compartments convert to comfortable aft jump seats with standard snap-in cushions.
Seating is paramount when the family is along for the ride, and Mako accommodates passengers aboard the 212 by offering removable cushions atop the aft compartments that flank the splash well as standard equipment. The starboard locker offers access to the bilge area and rigging components such as the power steering pump; the port-side compartment serves as a 14-gallon baitwell. Because both positions double as seats, we would like to see a grab rail within reach of each. An optional padded insert creates a bench seat across the back of the cockpit.
The interior of the Mako’s baitwell is tinted blue, a color that studies have shown to help keep contained fish calmer – and healthier. Mako makes a bow rail standard equipment on the 212 which, combined with the high freeboard of the boat, helps keep younger family members contained. Optional cushions are available to adapt the two fish box lockers forward into padded seating. Additional seating is found on the forward end of the console, which encloses a privacy compartment suitable for a porta-potti and just large enough to serve as a changing room. The 212’s V-hull is designed for offshore use with 18 degrees of deadrise at the transom and a pair of lifting strakes on each side of the keel.
Mako builds the 212’s hull using “3610,” which is a premium biaxial mat made of 36-ounce woven fiberglass into which an ounce of fiberglass chop has been inserted. The transom and chines are reinforced using three layers of 3610, which overlap at the keel creating six layers of the material where it’s needed the most. The hull is backed by a fiberglass stringer grid that is gel-coated and finished before being bonded to the hull with Methamethacrylite adhesive, the same stuff used on high-end boats.
The Mako 212’s standard anchor locker is plenty large and all the stainless steel deck fastenings are backed with aluminum plates. The boat’s second-battery option offers the cell mounted forward under the bow deck where a Mako spokesman explained it helps better distribute the weight. Because that area is susceptible to pounding, we’d like to see the battery in a tray offering more than a web strap to secure it in place.Flush-mounted boxes with a capacity for securing six rods each in bungee, Star Board racks are glassed into both gunwales of the 212. Note the amount of room between the gunwale and the center console, courtesy of the boat’s broad, 102” (275cm) beam. The helm of the Mako 212 is simple and straightforward, with breakered rocker switches controlling the lights and accessories, and two multi-function gauges to make room for a flush-mounted fishfinder on the angled dash.A leaning post with rocket launcher is standard seating at the helm. Note the partial view of the optional insert forward of the splash well to create a bench seat across the aft end of the cockpit. The T-top is optional. A new feature for the 2012 models are recessed Lenco electronic trim tabs.The integrated swim platform is large enough to be practical and can be used with a swim ladder. We like to see swim ladders where they can be reached by a person in the water. The 212 maintains a standard center console layout with two large fishboxes forward, console with integrated jump seat amidships, and a cockpit with leaning post and a baitwell and bilge access aft. The T-top frame shown is an option. Engine options for the Mako 212 include Mercury Optimax and Verado XL outboards ranging in power from 150- to 250-hp.
Mako is dead-on offering this boat for offshore fishing families. The V-hull and 8'6" (2.59cm) beam combine to create a boat that will be comfortable and capable for cruising and fishing in coastal waters. Seating options are adequate for a family – or fishing party of four to enjoy a day on the water. Adding options such as the T-top, dual battery, and bench-seat insert to make the boat as family friendly as possible boosts the boat from a base price of $37,995 with standard Mercury 150-hp XL Optimax and EZ Loader trailer, to $43,985, which includes freight to a Mako dealer located on the Great Lakes. That’s a good price for a customized fishing rig built around a good hull.
