Brief Summary

The Tidewater 252 CC Adventure is an all-composite design with a cored-foam transom and a composite, foam-filled grid under the decking. She has a 9'3" (2.82 m) beam and the boat we tested weighed 4,930 lbs. (2,236 kg). All mounting surfaces are reinforced, and all hardware is mounted on aluminum backing plates. She comes nicely equipped with the hardtop, Lenco tabs and tilt steering -- all standard. She's a hard core bluewater fisherman with a 21-degree deadrise, but standard bow cushions give family members a spot to stretch out between casts.

    Captain's Report

Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure running shot
The Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure has an LOA of 24’8” (7.52 m) LOA with a 9’3” (2.82 m) beam and she comes standard with twin 115-hp outboards. We tested her with twin 150-hp Evinrude E-TEC motors.

    Mission Statement

Tidewater Boats developed the 252 CC Adventure to replace the 250 CC and be more of a multi-purpose boat with bluewater bloodlines. For serious offshore fishing, she is designed with Tidewater’s signature broken sheer line and Carolina flair at the bow. Twin Evinrude E-TEC 150-hp outboard motors offer the security of redundancy for the run home and the power for towing tubers or boarders. For family time, she comes with a foldaway aft bench, a seat on the front of the console and bow cushions, plus a freshwater shower.

    Features Inspection

    Deep Cockpit.

Looking at the 252 CC Adventure’s sheer line, it’s easy to see where it breaks and rises up adjacent to the leaning post. It’s designed this way because the deck flares out as it runs forward and this break makes it easier to pull the hull and deck from the mold. Aft, the deck height is 27-½” (69.85 cm), a comfortable height to lean against when fishing. It rises to 33-½” (85.09 cm) amidships and in the bow, which makes these passenger areas more secure for the family.

Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure gate
The passageway to the stern is to port and it closes off with a gate that secures with a barrel bolt.

    The Stern.

The easiest way to board the 252 CC Adventure from a dock is at the stern. There are small swim steps on each side of the motors and forward of the port motor is a pullout freshwater shower. To starboard, the livewell comes standard, and the clear acrylic hatch is new on the 252 CC Adventure. It was a solid plastic model on the 250 CC. To port, there’s an aft boarding ladder and forward is a passageway to the cockpit that closes off with a gate. Another upgrade from the old model, a hatch folds out of the passageway sole to reveal a draining storage compartment that could be good for docklines and watersports towrope.

Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure locker
This locker in the aft passageway into the cockpit is new on the 252 CC Adventure.

    The Aft Cockpit.

Across the stern, a bench folds out to offer seating for a few people. It has four rod holders in the backrest and, to give anglers something comfortable to lean against, padding runs up the gunwale on each side, ending alongside the console. A hatch in the sole beneath the bench pulls out for access to pumps and other gear. There are drains in each aft corner for the self-bailing cockpit.

Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure aft bench
The aft bench seat folds out on heavy-duty stainless-steel hinges. Hardware like this should hold up well over the long haul. The livewell to starboard has a 25-gallon (95-L) capacity.

    Leaning Post Choices.

The 252 CC Adventure comes standard with a leaning post that has a padded backrest for standup travel. It’s hinged and has storage in the base. Owners can upgrade to one with individual foldup bolsters so the captain and a companion can choose to sit or stand. Both of these are built on rugged powder-coated frames. Options include a fiberglass leaning post with a sink or livewell on the back side. A hatch in the cockpit sole beneath the leaning post pulls aside for access to the fuel tank fittings and sending unit.

Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure bolsters
Paying attention to the details, Tidewater designs the optional fold-up bolsters with a wraparound-style bottom cushion to provide better support.
Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure helm seats
With the cushions lowered, the raised fronts of the bolsters will help hold passengers in place and notice the footrest on the powder-coated frame below.

    The Helm.

Forward of the leaning post, the helm has the stainless steel steering wheel with a spinner knob on a tilt base to port with the engine controls centrally positioned. The buttons for the Lenco trim tabs are squeezed in between the steering wheel and shifts and throttles. Tidewater might consider relocating them to ahead of the throttles so that a driver could just lay his hand on the levers and adjust the tabs more comfortably. The key switches are ahead of the co-pilot’s seat just above are two stainless-steel cup holders. Ahead of the companion’s legs is a small tackle drawer. There’s space for electronics in a vertical section of the dash that would put screens at eye level. Up top are a compass and two shallow trays that could be good for frequently reached-for items like pliers or sunblock.

Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure helm
Stainless-steel toggle-style accessory switches on the 252 CC Adventure are an upgrade over the old plastic rocker-style units that were on the 250 CC.
Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure tackle box
In the helm console base to starboard, this tacklebox has two trays for lures.

    Designed As One.

A design upgrade that saves space and just plain looks better, the console is contoured for the powder-coated aluminum framework for the fiberglass hardtop to tuck into. This gives the console a cleaner look and it saves a few inches on each side, especially at deck level, which could help prevent stubbed toes. Overhead, the molded fiberglass hardtop has four rocket-launcher style rod holders and outrigger mounting plates integrated in the frame. A hatch in the console to port opens to let crewmembers get to the helm rigging. A portable head for this area is an available option.

In this photo we see how the hardtop base is contoured into the new console. It creates a cleaner look and creates more passage space.
Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure hard top
In this photo, the hardtop has a few options including the colored underside, stereo speakers and LED lights.
Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure electronics box
The optional electronics box has two locking latches for security and LED lights to make it easier to see the equipment inside at night.
Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure outriggers
The Taco 280 Grandslam outriggers are a popular option on the 252 CC Adventure.

    Bow Seating.

Moving forward into the 252 CC Adventure’s boat, there’s a single seat on the front of the console. For cruising or days at the beach, cushions snap in place on the V-shaped nonskid walking surfaces to lounges on each side of the bow and there’s a small cushion that drops in place forward to fill in the area. Something we’re seeing more of on more boats in this size and class, backrests fold out of the gunwale aft on each side to create forward-facing lounges where an adult can stretch out. Padding runs forward from the backrests to the bow on each side.

Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure console
The console seat has a padded backrest and Tidewater might consider putting grab handles or straps on each side so a passenger can hang on.
Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure bow
With all of the cushions in place, the bow becomes a social area and notice that the stainless steel grab rails are below deck level so lines won’t snag when it’s time to fish.
Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure bow
With the foldout backrests deployed, bow passengers can stretch out, relax and chat.
Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure hinge
The heavy-duty hinge and latch assembly for the bow backrest makes it strong enough for an adult to lean against.
Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure cushions
Cushions unsnap so they can be stored indoors during the off-season or taken to a repair shop if necessary.
Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure casting platforms
With the cushions out of the way, there are raised casting platforms on each side of the bow.

    Bow Storage.

The bottom cushion on the console seat has a pull strap so it can be opened to access the draining storage beneath it. The bow lockers have hinged hatches that lay outboard against the gunwale pad, making it easy to get to the contents. There’s a locker beneath a hatch in the sole that would be good for a casting net. In the foredeck, a hatch opens the anchor locker that can be equipped with an optional under-deck windlass.

Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure bow locker
The bow locker hatches lay outboard against the gunwale pads, but we’d like to see Tidewater equip them with pneumatic struts to hold them open in a seaway.
Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure foredeck locker
The foredeck locker is new on the 252 CC Adventure and it comes standard with a clip for a Danforth-style anchor and space for a couple hundred feet of rode.
Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure windlass
For an uncluttered foredeck, the optional windlass is recessed beneath the locker hatch.

Tidewater builds the 252 CC Adventure free of wood, using composite coring in the transom and a molded fiberglass grid for the boat’s stringers and transverse supports. The structure is called a Corrugated Grid Stringer Version (CGSV) and Tidewater has a specific CGSV for each model it builds with reinforcement built-in for fuel tanks, consoles, seats and storage compartments. The CGSV is foam-filled to reduce vibration and noise. All deck hardware is installed with aluminum backing plates.

Tidewater calls the 252 CC Adventure’s internal structure the Corrugated Grid Stringer Version and it’s laminated into the hull as a single piece.

    Power and Performance

The Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure comes standard with twin 115-hp outboards and can be powered by a single or twin motors up to 300-hp total.

    Evinrudes Tested.

We tested the boat with a pair of Evinrude E-TEC 150-hp 2-stroke outboards turning Quicksilver 15” (38.1 cm) x 19” (48.26 cm) stainless-steel props through 1.86:1 reductions. With the choppy conditions we experienced on test day we

    reached a top speed

of 44.7 mph (38.9 knots) at 5000 rpm and burned 30.7 gph (116.2 lph). Now as we said, that was in choppy conditions. The team at Tidewater has tested this same boat extensively and reports speeds up to 50 mph on the flat, and while we didn’t achieve that, we certainly can see how it would be feasible in better conditions than what we had for our test. Best cruise was at 2500 rpm where the boat ran 23.6 mph (20.5 knots) and consumed only 9 gph (34.1 lph), giving us a range of 297 statute miles with 10% of the boat’s 126-gallon (477-L) fuel capacity in reserve.

    In acceleration tests

, the boat planed in 3.5 seconds and continued to 20 mph (17.4 knots) in 5 seconds and to 30 mph (26.1 knots) in 6.7 seconds.

The Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure is available with twin or single outboards up to 300-hp total.

    Handling and Ride.

We tested the 252 CC Adventure in a mix of conditions and were impressed with her overall ride. She has a deep bow entry and a broad flare that helped keep the deck dry on a day that served up confused seas from other boats’ wakes. With a transom deadrise of 21-degrees, she rode well in bay chop and big boat wakes so a run offshore on a reasonable day is definitely in the cards. In turns she showed plenty of agility, carving clean arcs and staying on track so she should be a capable tow platform for watersports as well.

    Tidewater Boats 252 CC Adventure
The 252 CC Adventure felt smooth and stable in turns and notice how the hull’s flared design deflects spray, keeping it out of the boat.

The boat sells for about $100,000, give or take a few thousand dollars depending on the engines specified.

    10-year Warranty.

    Options to Consider

    • Hull color ($1,583)
    • Polk Bluetooth stereo ($883)
    • Thru-hull plow anchor with windlass ($4,167)
    • Underwater lights ($250)
    • T-top spray shield ($750)

On the Tidewater Boats’ website, the manufacturer touts the 252 CC Adventure primarily as a fishing boat, but with her cockpit depth and spacious bow, it could be a good all-around family center console with just a few options added. Her 9’3” (2.82 m) beam pushes the limits for trailering but a savvy owner could get away with it. With her empty weight of 4,150 lbs. (1,882 kg), on a trailer full of equipment, she would probably weigh between 6,000 lbs. (2,722 kg) and 6,500 lbs. (2,948 kg), which would be an easy load for a half-ton pickup or SUV.
