NITRO Z-9 CDCBy Captain John B. WenzIn 1978, a man named Johnny Morris introduced the Bass Tracker, the first complete fishing package sold for a nationally advertised price. Today, the Tracker Marine Group is one of the world’s most popular boat families in the industry. In fiberglass or aluminum, if you’re looking for a boat under 35 feet, a bass boat, a runabout, a houseboat, or a pontoon boat, for salt or fresh water, chances are that there’s a boat in the Tracker family that fits your needs. If it happens to be a bass boat, and you feel the “need for speed” the Nitro lineup is right “up your alley.”Each one of Nitro’s “Z” models is a matched package of boat and motor, aimed at the fisherman with an eye for boat performance. And not only do they get you to the fish fast, but once you get there, you’re all set up with the stuff you need to catch ‘em and to have fun doing it- case in point, the Nitro Z-9 CDC. This center console rocket is loaded with features while delivering the kind of performance that’s sure to please the biggest “speed junkie.” The Z9 CDC is a product of all the background and experience of the Nitro staff. We recently journeyed out to Table Rock Lake, Missouri to take a test ride and an up-close look.

Nitro Z-9 CDCA Walk Around the BoatUp forward there’s a fishing chair and it’s surrounded by a bunch of storage compartments. There’s locking rod storage to port, another big bin to starboard, more storage on the centerline for tackle and other gear, and a 21 gallon livewell just forward of the console. A MotorGuide 24-volt trolling motor with foot control will glide you silently around your secret spot and the built-in electrical panel is fitted with an anchor light switch, a trim switch and room for a flush-mounted fishfinder/GPS.The dual console is mounted on the centerline. It’s got features all around and offers 360 degree fishability. On the front you’ll find the controls for the forward livewell pump system. There’s also another handy little feature- a built-in tournament ruler in a holder right in the center. The wheel is to port, and it’s surrounded by a set of classic automobile-type instruments and functional switches. Two locking glove boxes, and a stainless steel grab rail are built-in to starboard. A Lowrance X27 Combination Fish Finder/GPS is standard, and the tilt-wheel, hydraulic steering, along with plenty of legroom msakes for a comfortable skipper on the longer trips to the other end of the lake. A couple of storage boxes and a built-in trash make use of the little nooks and crannies, and on either side, outboard, under the gunnels you’ll find a couple of rod holders.

Nitro Z-9 CDCThe Z-9 CDC is long enough on the beam to allow for four-across bench seating. The outboard seats feature cushions which slide back to reveal a sturdy step for aft-deck access. The engine and pump controls are in the center, and you seem to be surrounded by stainless cupholders and grabrails.On the aft deck is another fold-down fishing chair with a bunch of storage efficiently laid-out all-around underfoot. There’s slotted tackle storage to port, two guardian livewells, and another removable tackle storage bin to starboard. A couple of storage trays lift out, just forward of the transom, for access to batteries and other electrical equipment. A plug-in allows for battery charging at the dock or while on the trailer and a reboarding ladder has been built right in. The Tale of the TapeThe Nitro Z-9 CDC is 21’ in overall length, with a beam of 96”. She carries a maximum of 4, with a total weight of 1250 pounds. A 65 gallon fuel tank is fitted, and she’ll handle an outboard rated up to 300 horsepower. The all-fiberglass hull features foam filled stringers and is full of useful details like a sturdy rub rail and pop-up cleats. Our TestRigged with a Mercury Optimax Pro XS 250, we took the Z-9 CDC through her paces at a popular fishing destination in the heart of the Midwest. By the way, the 250 is one of five Optimax engine options which are factory-rigged on the CDC, ranging from 200 to 300 horsepower. This powerful direct injected engine features carbon fiber intake reeds controlling airflow into the crankcase, while dome-shaped pistons provide for efficient combustion and lower emissions. The TorqueMaster gear case features a heavy-duty prop shaft and dual cooling ports and the asymmetrical skeg helps prevent engine torque created by prop rotation. The Pro-XS series offers a higher Wide-Open throttle setting which makes for a wider range of prop choices, allowing you to get maximum performance out of your boat and motor combination.

Nitro Z-9 CDCThis boat goes like a rocket with the 250 we tested. We jumped up out of the hole in 3.7 seconds and the needle hit 30 miles an hour in 9.6 seconds. Our top speed was a blistering 71.5 mph at 5800 rpm- talk about being first to your favorite spot! We determined our best fuel economy to be at 4000 rpm where we calculated our range to be 252 miles at 42.7 miles an hour.The hull delivers, no question about it. But what was really most impressive was the ride comfort. The engineering of the seat cushions, the console and seating give you a secure feeling at top-end speeds. You can also conveniently fish all around the boat, so a party of four won’t get in the way of one another. That’s something that works for my crew and I’m sure that the Nitro Z-9 CDC will work for you, too.
