Content courtesy ofAs pontoon boats have come into their own, they’ve gotten bigger, faster, and more luxurious. Premier’s 310 Dodici is an example of all three of those characteristics. At nearly 12’ (3.66 m), this boat now has possibly the widest beam of any production pontoon. That’s where Dodici comes from; it means 12 in Italian. She has granite tile deck, and plush, easy-chair seating. Regarding speed, we haven’t tested her yet, but with triple 300 Evinrude E-TEC G2s -- an industry first -- we should be seeing speeds in the low 60s. And with the Evinrude Optimus i-Dock joystick controlling the three engines, docking couldn’t be easier.

With a nearly 12’ (3.66 m) beam, the Premier 310 Dodici has the widest beam that we know of in a production pontoon boat. It’s huge. In fact, she gets her name, Dodici from that beam; it means 12 in Italian. All it took was one glance to see that this is, indeed, a big pontoon boat. It’s also loaded with high-end features, such as the latest generation of Evinrude E-TEC G2 engines, i-Dock joystick functionality, real marble tile flooring, and luxury seating throughout. It’s offered in three different versions with the only differences being in the layouts. Choose from the “Cruise” layout with a dining table and bar along with a forward lounge/gathering area, the “Pub” version with a floating watering hole, minus the live band, or the “Cruise CL,” which swaps out the forward swivel seats for wraparound seating.
The Evinrude Effect
Before we get into the features inspection, it bears mentioning of the many benefits that the Evinrude installation brings to the Premier 310 Dodici. First off, this is the first triple installation on a production pontoon boat, and coupled with this being the widest beam in the industry, this is a big deal. This latest generation of E-TEC engines bring a lot to the table both in terms of reliability and functionality. The new engine design starts with a block and heads that have been reconfigured to maximize combustion, reduce fuel consumption, and effectively lower emissions. All cylinders are fed by direct, in-cylinder fuel injection. Fuel is delivered inside the combustion chamber, rather than in the intake manifold, resulting in more accurate fuel delivery and excellent fuel efficiency
Key Features of the Evinrude E-TEC G2 300 Engine
At the helm, there are two features that are of immediate benefit to the operator. The iCon display at the panel that allows for selectable information to be displayed so the captain can dial in the readout to fit whatever parameters are felt to be most important. And then there’s the iDock joystick:
With iDock, we’ve had joystick functionality for the Evinrude outboards, and it’s been available for some time for twin installations. This is the first time it has been offered for triples, and it’s really a no-brainer as far as the application goes. Rather than go through complicated programming to dial in the how’s and when’s of the center engine’s operation, Evinrude took a much less complicated, and therefore less costly tack. What it did was slave the center engine to the port engine with a tie-bar, effectively keeping the twin operation that we’ve had for years. The center engine stays in neutral unless more power is called for by either bumping the stick into boost mode or pushing the stick to its limits. Since the throw is progressive, that is to say the further it’s moved, the more power is delivered, full swing brings the center engine into play. During our tests, we were able to maneuver the 310 Dodici with exacting precision in both a crosswind and cross current with little effort and no problem. The system works flawlessly.
We’ve already said that this boat is the first 12’ (3.66 m) beam in a production pontoon. The previous Holy Grail number was 10’ (3.05 m) beam. But to accommodate this width, Premier couldn’t just make longer cross beams and call it a day. It had to redesign new tubes as well. The center performance, or PTX tube, on Premier boats has traditionally been a 36” (91 cm) tube, where on the 310 Dodici it’s been enlarged to 42” (106.68 cm), still with the PTX features of full length stepped strakes, flat planing surface on the bottom and integrated splash rails. The two outside tubes are 27” (68.6 cm). This combination allows the 310 Dodici to have a capacity rating of 22 people and also accommodate the first-ever installation of triple outboards -- 900-hp combined. During the Miami Boat Show, Premier was giving constant sea trial rides, and with 22 people onboard, they were still able to achieve speeds in the mid 50s.
We’ll start our features inspection at the bow where in the Cruise layout, we have a pair of swivel chairs flanking a pedestal table to port and L-shaped seating to starboard with another set of pedestal tables in front. One of the lounge seats is in front of the forward gate, and therefore, is movable, but, first, we need to lift the seat and loosen some thumbscrews that secure the seat to the deck. By having this seat secured, it is saved from being blown over, or being knocked loose as the 310 Dodici transitions chop. Of course, it won’t hurt when trailering either. The seats are ultra-cushy, and one actually sinks down into the seat rather than sitting atop of them. It’s a feeling that really needs to be felt rather than described, but suffice it to say that it will impress. Naturally, storage is underneath all of the seats and all are manufactured by Flexsteel, a high-end company well-known for its quality workmanship.
There are three entry gates to this area, one forward and one more to both the port and starboard sides. The average rail height is 29 ½” (74.93 cm). At the starboard gate, where the L-shaped seating ends, there’s an access door leading to a trash receptacle that can also be accessed by pulling the seatback forward. In this manner, the receptacle can be completely removed for emptying. The starboard gate opening measures 23.5” (59.69 cm), the port gate is a wheelchair accessible 31” (79 cm), the forward gate measures 29.5” (74.93 cm), and the stern measures in at 26.5” (67.31 cm).
The deck is carpeted with the optional Sea Grass that has an upscale look and feel, as well as being able to shed water and repel heat. However, to the length of the port side of the deck is actual granite tiled decking laid out in a curved pattern that adds a measure of class to the 310 Dodici.
The Bimini top is electrically actuated and is huge. At 12’ (3.66 m) wide and 13’6” (4.12 m) long, it covers virtually all of the rear and center area of the boat, up to the forward L-shaped couch. Shade being such a valuable commodity on a boat, guests will be lacking none of it here. There’s an option for a second Bimini to cover the forward area.
The helm is on a 4 ½” (11.43 cm) elevated platform. As discussed, the top of the line of what Evinrude has to offer is well represented at the panel. The helm seat, like the bow seats, is a 10-star Flexsteel with the same high-quality upholstery.
New, Remarkable Drink Holder
While the rest of the panel houses the usual cast of features, one standout is clearly not in that category: the drink holder. No, that’s not a typo, this drink holder is anything but ordinary. It’s refrigerated. Put a cold drink in it, and it will get colder, almost to the point of forming ice. Put a warm drink in it, and it will chill to a refreshing temperature in short order. This is a new feature from a third party, and Premier is among the first to implement it as it accompanies the luxury theme so well here. But it looks just like any other drink holder.
The bar is just behind the port entry gate and opposite the helm. Premier calls it their Bombay Bar, and it’s more of a bar to sit at rather than stand behind and serve guests. Swivel bar stools are on pedestals that are fixed to the deck. The two end stations have fold-out purse hooks. At the aft end of the bar is an electric sink with an internally lit ice chest alongside. This makes it easy for guests to serve themselves at this bar and keeps the social atmosphere flowing as well.
At the stern is a wrap-around lounge surrounding a triple pedestal table with stainless drink holders in the middle. As with the bow, the seats are incredibly plush, and the same high-end upholstery is utilized. Again, storage is underneath.
Behind the lounge and table is an elevated sun pad that conceals the usual head and changing room with privacy afforded by a pop-up screen. Just behind is a platform, slightly larger than the bow, but still modest to afford more interior space. A fuel fill is fixed to the center of the deck, and since this area is bound to be trafficked in bare feet, we’d like to see this moved to a better location. Further aft another platform surrounds all three engines making daily checks handy.
The Premier 310 Dodici has a LOA of 33’5” (10.19 m) and a beam of 11’10” (3.61 m). With an empty weight of 3,975 lbs. (1,803 kg), half fuel, and three people onboard, we estimated our test weight at 4,940 lbs. (2,241 kg).With a triple set of 300-hp Evinrude E-TEC G2s powering our test boat, we reached a top speed of 57 mph. With a pontoon boat, there really is no best economic cruise per se; she’ll get better mileage the slower one goes, and the fuel consumption is linear, so this is more of a boat that is run according to the boater and their guests’ comfort level. But keep in mind, just because this boat pushes nearly 60 mph, not all guests will feel comfortable with that speed. Sometimes a slow cruise up the lazy river is more enjoyable. Especially when there are drinks on the bar and cheese and cracker platters on the tables. It’s all about what one wants to do and how one wants to do it.
With that said, this boat does give exciting performance. There’s no surprise that triple 300s will get her moving along in short order, so either be gentle on the throttle or tell everyone to hang on. She’ll launch right off and pass 30 mph in just over six seconds. She’s got the PTX performance tubes, so her handling is equally sporty and the driver can expect flat turns when coming around.
Of course, where she really shines is in her comfort level, and nowhere does that manifest itself more than in her handling around the dock. With the Evinrude joystick, she can be maneuvered with ease, regardless of the usual cross winds or cross currents. If more power is needed, one can simply use boost, but, for me, I just activated in boost mode normally. The joystick is progressive, so when less power is called for, just use less stick, it’s as simple as that.
Overall, the Premier 310 Dodici represents a lot of firsts in a luxury package -- first 12’ (3.66 m) beam production pontoon, first triple outboard pontoon, first Optimus Joystick handling triple engines, all new color packages -- all adding up to an impressive boat. When it was introduced at the Miami boat show, it was constantly underway, providing sea trials for boaters who came from all types of vessels. And since it holds 22 people, virtually no party is too big for this boat. With multiple layouts offered, the 310 Dodici will be able to satisfy a more diverse crowd that can dial in the boat to their specific use. But regardless of how it’s used, there’s no denying that this versatile pontoon boat is among the most luxurious on the water.
