The 8.1 L engine is the biggest gasoline engine made by Volvo Penta and it is offered both with the stern drive package and in the IPS550 system. The 8.1GiE is a modern engine with electronic fuel injection and electronic control for faster engine response and safe starting in all weather. A truly robust design and an advanced monitoring system help to ensure reliability.
It is a 42% increase in engine displacement over the 5.7 L model, but this model yields only 17% more horsepower. That is because Volvo has de-tuned this engine for fuel economy and longer life.
The Duoprop drive with twin counter-rotating propellers delivers unbeatable acceleration and handling under all operating conditions. Power steering and trim are standard.
In tests we have conducted on the 26'5" (8.05 m) Doral Venezia powered by a single Volvo Penta 8.1 L engine she had a top speed of 47.8 mph. Best cruise was at 3000 rpm where she went 29.1 mph and got 2.51 miles per gallon.
