Captain's Report

Ocean Alexander 45 Divergence Coupe

The 45 Divergence Coupe measures 47’5” (14.45 m) long with a 13’9” (11.18 m) beam and she’s powered by quad Mercury outboards up to 1,600 hp total.

For the 45 Divergence Coupe, Ocean Alexander set out to take the best attributes of the 45 Divergence Sport and merge them with an enclosed pilothouse and helm deck. With her open cockpit and foredeck cushions, she still offers room to stretch out and soak up the rays. The enclosed helm deck has a spacious horseshoe-shaped lounge to port with the helm to starboard. Below, a full-beam master stateroom is aft with VIP quarters in the bow. In between are a spacious salon, galley and private head with a separate shower.

Ocean Alexander 45 Divergence Coupe Major Features

  • Integrated bracket for quad outboards
  • Boarding doors built into U.S. Patented fold-out bulwarks
  • Pilothouse encloses helm and companion dinette
  • Single-pane curved windshield
  • Full-beam aft master stateroom
  • Private cabin with 7’6” (2.29 m) of headroom

Boarding. The easiest way to board the 45 Divergence Coupe is via the hullside doors on each side. That is unless the sections of the U.S. Patented fold-out bulwarks are down. Ocean Alexander calls them Side Articulating Balconies, and they extend with the push of a button. There’s also a pull-out boarding ladder on the port side. Aft, the swim platform between the quad outboards is wide enough for easy passage ahead of them, and there’s a four-step boarding ladder on top of the swim platform to starboard. A large trunk locker provides ample storage space, and there’s a hot and cold shower in the passage to the cockpit.

The fold-out sections of the hullside are indicated by the blue arrow. Inside them are the boarding doors, indicated by the red arrow.

With the U.S. Patented fold-out bulwarks down, the aft cockpit’s beam extends to 19’ (5.79 m) of usable deck space.

The U.S. Patented fold-out bulwarks open with the push of a button in the passageway between the stern and cockpit.

The Cockpit. Entry to the 45 Divergence Coupe’s cockpit is via passageways on each side that close with glass gates framed in heavy-duty stainless-steel. There’s a fold-away seat that has armrests and integrated stainless-steel cupholders. A table can be set in a choice of three positions — floor, coffee or dining — and two folding chairs can be added. Of course, they store in a custom recessed hatch. The outdoor galley is forward beneath a hinged white fiberglass cover that opens on a gas strut. Underneath are a Scandvik stainless-steel sink with an Ambassador Marine hot and cold folding faucet and a Webasto 65-liter drawer-style refrigerator.

With the U.S. Patented fold-out bulwarks closed and the table lowered, the cockpit still has plenty of space.

The summer kitchen is forward to port in the cockpit, just inside the passageway to the bow.

The Bow. Steps outboard on each side of the cockpit lead up to the side decks. Stainless-steel rails start alongside the pilothouse and lead forward to provide safety and security. Forward, the center of the foredeck is raised and has a large sun pad with split adjustable backrests. There are cupholders outboard on each side. Forward, the anchor locker has a custom hatch with custom 316 stainless-steel hinges. Beneath it are a Maxwell electric windlass with panel and hand-held controls. The stainless-steel anchor comes with 25’ (7.62 m) of chain and 300’ (91.44 m) of rode, and it deploys with a stainless-steel roller chute.

The 45 Divergence Coupe’s foredeck has a lounge where a few adults can stretch out and enjoy the ride.

The Pilothouse. Back in the cockpit, a stainless-steel-framed sliding glass door to starboard opens to the helm deck, which is beneath a fiberglass hardtop and surrounded by windows. To starboard, the helm has a double-wide Llebroc seat that has manually operated flip-up bolsters and fold-down armrests. In the dash are twin Garmin GPSMap 8600 series 16” (40.64 cm) multifunction displays and Mercury’s VesselView 5” (12.7 cm) engine monitoring display. Trim tab switches have built-in position indicators. There are controls for the spotlight, windlass, windshield wiper/washer and the automatic fire-suppression system. Two air conditioning vents help keep the captain and a companion comfortable. To port, the settee wraps around a high-gloss walnut table. There is LED lighting throughout the boat, including red for the pilothouse at night.

Thanks to the generous use of windows at the stern and on each side, the pilothouse has an open and airy feel.

Finishing the helm primarily in black set against the lighter colors gives it a luxury sports car feel.

The table and lounge alongside the helm ensure that the captain will have some company during an extended cruise.

The Cabin. Centrally positioned stairs in the pilothouse lead below to an open atrium-style foyer. In the salon, there’s L-shaped seating and 76” (193 cm) of standing headroom. Dovetailed solid-wood cabinetry has positive-latch doors and drawers. Enlarged windows are set in custom framing and there’s an opening port to starboard. For entertainment, an optional 32” (81.28 cm) TV with Bose sound and Apple programming is available.

Ocean Alexander calls on its experience with larger motoryachts to create as much privacy as possible belowdecks.

The 45 settee has overhead storage and could be a good place to sit and watch a game or movie on the TV.

The Galley. To port, the galley has custom dovetailed solid wood cabinets and custom stone countertops with sink covers that add to the space. The recessed Elkay stainless-steel sink has a Grohe filtering faucet. The microwave-convection oven is from KitchenAid and Ocean Alexander uses a Kenyon two-burner induction cooktop. The refrigerator is an Isotherm. An air extraction fan rids the area of cooking odors and a custom window lets in natural light.

The use of lightly-colored woods and a surplus of natural and artificial lights give the 45 Divergence Coupe’s galley an open feel.

The Head. Just ahead of the galley, the head is molded fiberglass and has the same standing headroom as in the salon. There’s a separate shower stall with a full-sized curved acrylic door. Optional tile accents highlight the backsplash and shower seat and the sole is tile as well. The toilet is a Tecma Silent Plus and there’s an air extraction system plus a window to rid the area of steam and keep cool, fresh air flowing. There’s private access from the forward stateroom.

The custom tile work is something we might expect to see on one of Ocean Alexander’s larger motoryachts.

Accommodations. Entry to the full-beam aft stateroom is via a full-wood door. There’s a full-sized berth to starboard and a 44” (111.76 cm) sofa-style lounge to port. Windows in the hull on both sides let in natural light and have opening ports. Storage is provided in two side-by-side hanging lockers and in two small nightstands on each side of the headboard. There are also charging ports. The berth in the bow cabin is also a full and this stateroom has opening windows plus an optional 24” (60.96 cm) TV. There are hanging lockers to port and starboard, plus three additional compartments. This cabin also has private entry to the head.

Ocean Alexander 45 Divergence Coupe Technical Data

The Specs. We haven’t tested the 45 Divergence Coupe yet so we don’t have performance numbers. When we do, we will update this section. Her LOA with the motors is 47’5” (14.45 m) and the hull alone is 44’8” (13.61 m). Waterline length is 39’8” (11.18 m) and her beam is 13’9” (4.19 m) with the U.S. Patented fold-out bulwarks closed. With the motors trimmed up, she draws 35” (88.9 cm) and with them down, the number goes up to 47” (119.4 cm). Estimated dry weight with the four outboards is 33,200 pounds (15,059 kg). Fuel capacity is 500 gallons (1,893 liters) of gasoline for the engines and 50 gallons (189 liters) of diesel for the 11 kW Kohler generator that comes standard. Standard power is quad 350-hp Mercury Verado outboards and owners can upgrade to the 400-hp versions.

Construction. Ocean Alexander builds the 45 Divergence Coupe with vinylester resin and a blend of fiberglass and carbon fiber structural reinforcement in the hull. The laminate is infused for the proper saturation levels. The stringers are part of an infused structural grid that includes molded upper and lower liners in accommodation spaces. Bulkheads are all composite and the hull and deck are mechanically fastened. As an upgrade, the hull an deck can be painted with Alexseal polyurethane paint and epoxy-based primers. Machinery spaces are finished on the inside with gelcoat. All cleats, rod holders and rails are installed with aluminum backing plates.

Ocean Alexander offers optional Alexseal polyurethane paint over an epoxy primer for a superior finish that doesn’t need to be compounded annually.

Operational Systems. A power hatch in the center of the cockpit deck provides access to the 45 Divergence Coupe’s on board systems including a self-contained Dometic reverse-cycle climate maintenance. It’s rated at 10,000 Btus in the forward cabin, 16,000 Btus aft and 16,000 Btus in the pilothouse. Fuel-water separators for the engines and generator are easily accessed. A Fireboy automatic suppression system protects against fires. An Ocotoplex NMEA 2000 network controls the AC and DC electrical systems and the boat is equipped with 240-volt/50-amp shorepower. The battery complement consists of four group 31 units for the outboards plus four house units and two Mastervolt chargers. The battery switches are in the cabin.

Observations

Ocean Alexander is a newcomer to a crowded market segment — outboard-powered day boats more than 40 feet long. The 45 Divergence Coupe brings proven construction and a layout that should make her appeal to buyers in this category.

With the cabin layout designed for maximum privacy, two couples could enjoy a weekend getaway. There’s good flow between the cockpit and salon as well. We will have further comments once we get a chance to experience the boat in a future test.
