Rescue of the Week

2 Die As Skipper Ignores Tug Lights and Horn Blasts Headboat Captain saves 2 fishermen then rescues a windsurfer at 2 am Sunday ***Only in New York!***

What seems obvious in daylight looks quite different in the black of night with many lights on shore. At night a tug's running lights indicate a barge in tow.

A 24' Baha Cruisers walkaround fishing boat capsized after turning into a tugboat's tow cable, killing two passengers on Saturday night, Oct. 20, in Ambrose Channel south of the Verrazano Bridge on the approach to New York Harbor around 10:54 pm. The boat's skipper/owner, Roland Angnali, 61, apparently ignored the tugboat's warning blasts from its horn and its light shining on the cable, the Coast Guard said. To find out what happened, why two men lived and two died, and about the thanks a Good Samaritan got from a stranded windsurfer…click here.

Sink In Typhoon

Was "Bull" Halsey a Turkey?

If you grew up watching weekly episodes of "Victory at Sea" then you may not know that the worst drubbing the US Navy got in the Pacific in WWII was an encouter with Typhoon Cobra on December 18, 1944.  On that day three destroyers, 146 planes and 790 men were lost.
This is an episode in Naval history that the Navy would like to sweep under the paperwork, if not forget altogether. The recently published "Halsey's Typhoon" is a well-researched and griping tale of three ships turning turtle and sinking. To find out what happened, why, and who was at fault --Buy the book!
