Raymarine LifeTag Tested
BoatTEST.com discovers that the installation booklet leaves even Raymarine's Tech Support confused

A great concept

Installation booklet with yellow addendum.

Raymarine Rep. and BoatTEST Captain.
We were so enthusiastic about Raymarine's new man overboard LifeTag alarm system that we thought we'd test one out for ourselves. After following the directions for installation we could not get the system to work, so a Raymarine tech kindly drove down from the home office to assist us with the installation. After two hours for what should have been a 20-minute job, we were no closer to a functioning system.

See our complete test and find out what the final results were after two attempts and more than five hours, watch the video to see our real-life installation experience.

Yanmar Sets
New Horizon
Lightweight 260-hp Diesel targets
20' to 35' boats in multiple applications

Yanmar's 6BY260Z is designed for more torque at all RPMs.

Yanmar positions its 6-cylinder 260-hp diesel engine against the Volvo Penta D4 of the same horsepower. Yanmar's 3 liter diesel is almost 40% lighter than the 4-cylinder D4 3.7 liter Volvo Penta diesel. Because the Yanmar is lightweight with high torque, boat builders are considering it for single, twin and triple installations…see video report.

A Tale of Two Cities Style then Functionality?
Sabre 42 vs Sunseeker 44

South Casco, Maine Sabre 42

Poole, England
Sunseeker 44
We spent a week cruising in each of these express cruisers so that we could "compare and contrast” the functionality of two boats whose builders were clearly singing from different sheets of music. Both boats are 2003 models, are privately owned boats, and purchased in the low 600s when new. The Sunseeker 44 is no longer in production, however the Sabre 42 is still being built with minor modifications from what you will see here.

If you would like to see the first six videos in this series from the mission, styling, helm, instruments, companion seating, to the bridge deck…click here.

Pods Are Busting
Out All Over

Change is coming fast as most engine makers embrace pod drive/joystick technology

ZF Pod Drives will be used by a number of diesel engine brands.
The word on the dock is that several diesel engine makers in addition to CMD (Cummins MerCruiser Diesel) are laying plans now to jump on the pod drive bandwagon. Yanmar and Cat are expected to start employing the ZF pod drive within a year or so. To find out more …click here.

Ex-Sea Ray
Product Development Chief Discusses Tunnels in Planing Boats
48-year boating veteran Mike Meyer explains the pros and cons of tunnels

Tunnels and propeller pockets became popular in the 1970s for several reasons.

Mike Meyer was C.N. Ray's right-hand man for nearly two decades as Sea Ray rocketed from small stern drives to become the world's largest builder of inboard-powered boats. As VP of Product Development and Engineering for Sea Ray from 1970 to 1991, Meyer was in on the creation of the “express cruiser” type with Sea Ray's famous “Sundancer” series of boats. As well as nurturing it to stardom and 17 years later they are still going strong.

For the last several years Mike has been a consultant to Volvo Penta and has been deeply involved with the introduction of the IPS system to boat builders all over the world. Hear what he has to say about tunnels, hulls, inboard installations and the IPS.

Only 5,000 40'+ Powerboats Sold New in the U.S. Last Year

Marinas full of large boats makes one think that zillions of boats are sold each year.

New boat sales statistics for the first half of 2007 were recently released and not surprisingly, sales were down for most companies and many were in double-digit decline. NMMA figures indicate that overall sales for powerboats of all sizes have dropped from about 300,000 a couple years ago to about 260,000 recently. However, dealers are reporting good fall boat show attendance this year across the country, so possibly the business has....read more

A record breaking (for south of Carins) Black Marlin catch off Townsville, Queensland, Australia, has reignited bitter divisions over the killing of this highly prized game fish.
