Volvo Penta Sterndrive Engines:
“Entire Engine Package” -- 5-Year Warranty

Volvo Penta Sterndrive Engines
We don’t often publish commercial videos made by boat or engine makers, but this video exception proves the rule. It is a strictly promotional video singing the praises of Volvo Penta and some of the points deserve attention – such as the company’s 5-Year Warranty Factory Program.

This fall Volvo Penta introduced a new series of engine – the V8 5.3 L which comes in both 300-hp and 350-hp versions. These engines are built around a GM block and head made of aluminum alloy, not cast iron; they have direct in-cylinder fuel injection, not the old multi-port manifold system of injection; they have variable valve timing, not a fixed cam; they have a closed cooling system, instead of raw water… among other attributes. Two interior layouts are offered, depending on whether the 45 Express will be used more as a single-cabin couples cruiser or as an overnighter for four people. A cockpit mezzanine bench seat will be a popular place whether fishing or partying. More...

A New Center Console w/ Handy Dive Door

Boston Whaler 330 Outrage
The new Boston Whaler 330 Outrage has a dive door on the port side, providing easy access for swimmers, as well as functioning as a tuna door when needed.

The Boston Whaler 330 Outrage features a variable-deadrise V-hull with 23-degrees of deadrise at the transom, plus full-length hard chines and lifting strakes for added lift and roll stability. The combination should provide a smooth ride and predictable handling. A multi-functional aft-facing fixture behind the console doubles as a leaning post, and converts to form a handy work surface. Bayliner VR5:
New Entry-Level Bowrider
w/ Lightning Hole Shots

Bayliner VR5
The Bayliner VR5 offers strong performance with the standard 200-hp MerCruiser, producing remarkable hole shots.

The Bayliner VR5 has somewhat more interior space than many entry-level runabouts of this class thanks to a beam carried further forward than most. A full-beam sun pad with an adjustable lounge backrest spans the top of the engine box, and a deck-level walkway makes for easy passage to the swim platform. A 20-degree deadrise at the transom should smooth the ride in choppy water. More...

Given the quality and market acceptance of these vessels, it was inevitable that the range would keep growing. While Hunt Yachts has a wide range of propulsion options available, this newest launch, now the flagship of the product line, is powered by HamiltonJet Water Jets. The advantages of jets are obvious. Scarab 195 HO:
Supercharged Jet w/ Versatile Seating

Scarab 195 HO
Scarab’s “Versa Lounge” converts the stern seating from aft-facing seats to a flat sun lounge, and a walkthrough turns the seat backs into arm rests. This makes the stern seating the most versatile location on the boat.

The squared-off bow of the Scarab 195 HO adds seating space forward, while the U-shaped amidships seating includes cutouts to increase legroom. The hull design incorporates longitudinal tunnels and chine steps to reduce hull resistance and improve acceleration. Deadrise is 20-degrees at the transom. The HO model is powered by the 1.5 L supercharged Rotax 250 jet drive system, which the company says delivers a top end of around 43 mph. More...

Prop Selection

PowerTech! Selecting Props:
Matching the Prop to the Purpose

PowerTech Selecting Props
Three-blade props are by far the most popular choice for recreational boats, but they're not best in all cases according to the propping experts at PowerTech!.

The performance pros at PowerTech! say choosing a prop depends on boat weight and design, as well as available horsepower. And just as important is the intended use of the boat -- a performance boat will usually deliver better speeds with a three-blade of maximum pitch, while a pontoon boat purposed to carry lots of people enjoying a day on the water might perform much better with a four-blade of moderate pitch.
