Mercury 115 FourStroke:
Compact 2.1L 4-Stroke Power

Mercury 115 FourStroke
The Mercury 2.1 liter 4-stroke is offered in three versions, all packing lots of power into a lightweight outboard that turns out excellent fuel economy.

Mercury's 2.1 liter 4-stroke block is available in 75, 90 and 115 horsepower versions, each in a compact package that's relatively lightweight -- lightest in class, according to Mercury, in the case of the 115. These are SOHC engines with multi-port electronic fuel injection. In our test run of the 115, our captain recorded a maximum fuel burn of just 11 gallons per hour at 6000 rpms. More...

New Overview Video

Ocean Alexander 85 Motoryacht:
She's "The Real Thing"

Ocean Alexander 85 Motoryacht
At 85' (25.9 m), the Ocean Alexander 85 Motoryacht has nearly all of the major attributes that one might find in a yacht 25' longer. With her 20'1" (6.12 m) beam and considerable displacement, she is ready for world cruising.

The Ocean Alexander 85 Motoryacht is a serious cruising motoryacht, not a flashy imitation of the real thing designed for ICW ditch digging and cocktails at the dock. Not that she can't be a superb entertaining platform -- she is that as well -- but as for standard equipment she comes with all of the systems necessary to take her owners and guests nearly anywhere they want in comfort and luxury as good as it gets in class. Virtually all of her systems are what we would call "best practices". More...

New Captain's Report

Scarab 215 HO Impulse:
Quick and Nimble Watersports Platform

Scarab 215 Impulse
Our test captain found the Scarab 215 HO Impulse to be a remarkably quick and agile bowrider, with the exciting performance of a PWC and the space of a sportboat.

The Scarab 215 HO Impulse is a rocket sled out of the hole, planing in a head-snapping 1.8 seconds in our test runs, and she topped out at 54.1 mph. Twin Rotax 200s provide the power for this athletic watersports machine, which displays the same turn-in-its-own-length agility as many PWCs, but provides lots more space, towing power and creature comfort. Formula 40 PC:
Performance Cruiser with Style

Formula 40 PC
The Formula 40 PC is a high-speed weekender, able to go from mainland to island or distant shore for a picnic or overnighter without much concern about wind or weather.

The Formula PC is designated as a "Performance Cruiser", and our test captain found she earns the title: With twin 370-hp Volvo Penta IPS500 pod drive engines, the test boat reached a top speed of 35.5 knots at 3500 rpm. At that speed she burned 41 gph, giving a range of 194.9 nm, while her best economy was recorded at 3000 rpm and 28.3 knots, where she burned 27.5 gph for a 231.9 nm range. Her fit-and-finish is best in class. More...

Maritimo M58:
Cruising Motoryacht for the Savvy Customer

Maritimo M58
The Maritimo M58 has a LOA of 61’4’’ (18.7 m), a beam of 17’1’’ (5.20 m)
and a draft of 4’5’’ (1.35 m).

The Maritimo M58 is a cruising motoryacht built for those who are serious about cruising and are veteran boaters. That’s not to say that one needs to be experienced for this yacht, but rather the demands on the yacht itself are more stringent when appealing to a more experienced consumer. Such is the case with the M58. She couples an exemplary fit-and-finish with a layout that is versatile. For overnights, she has accommodations for 6 in three staterooms with two heads. Entertaining can be had with two salons and a pair of aft decks that will keep everyone impressed and comfortable. Her most notable feature is a fully enclosed flying bridge. More...

Regal 2100 RX:
Sporty and Agile Platform

Regal 2100 RX
The Regal 2100 RX is a quick and handsome towboat that comes well-equipped with most of the gear that watersport families want.

The Regal 2100 RX is a rip-roaring and sporty towboat that readily breaks the 50 mph mark with a relatively modest (and fuel-efficient) 250-horse MerCruiser sterndrive, thanks in part to her "FasTrac" ventilated hull, according to our test captain. She comes equipped with more standard equipment than many in-class, offers premium-level fit-and-finish and somehow does it for less money than some competitors. More...

Grady-White Express 330:
Burly Express with Outboard Power

Grady-White Express 330
The Grady-White Express 330 promises a smooth, dry ride for bluewater anglers, as well as for families who want to spend time "just messing about" in a durable, premium-class boat that should hold her value well.

The Grady-White Express 330 is equipped as a very capable bluewater fishing boat but, it also includes many amenities that make for family comfort when fish are not on the agenda. The galley features a microwave oven, Corian countertop, two-burner cooktop and an Isotherm refrigerator/freezer, while the stand-up head includes a shower and VacuFlush toilet. Note the colored hull in the image above. More...

Sea Ray L590 Fly:
World-Class U.S.-Built Motoryacht

Sea Ray L590 Fly
The Sea Ray L590 Fly has a level of fit-and-finish, quality materials and styling panache that make her a head-turner at sea or easing into a slip.

Our test captain characterizes the new L590 Fly's interior as "gorgeous" -- something that we have never before heard him say. We invite you to read his report and judge for yourself. Certainly the new approach taken by Sea Ray in its Luxury Series has the industry buzzing, and has put our friends across the pond on notice. More...

Four Winns H230:
Family-Friendly Premium Sportboat

Four Winns H230
An aft-facing seat overlooking the swim platform will be the most popular spot aboard the Four Winns H230 when she's not zipping across the lake pulling a wakeboard. Note the size of the swim platform which is at water level.

The Four Winns H230 is a good-looking mid-range bowrider that can offer sporty performance along with family-friendly features, like the seating which faces the swim platform -- it's convertible to a sun pad or chaise lounge spanning the width of the boat. Quality touches include tin-coated copper wiring harnesses with silicone connection seals and all-composite construction for long-term durability. More...

Sea Fox 246 Commander:
An Attractive Price/Value Alternative

Sea Fox 246 Commander
At just over 24' (7.3 m) in length, the 246 Commander is the largest single engine model in the Sea Fox Commander Series of center console inshore and coastal fishing rigs.

The Sea Fox 246 Commander has a newly designed console and enhanced ergonomic styling for 2014. Her 8'6" (2.59 m) beam and deck plan provide bow and stern seating for passengers in a conventional layout. Her strong suits, in our opinion, are her external styling, bottom shape, and price. More...

Beneteau Sense 55:
Powerboat Comfort in a Sailing Yacht

Beneteau Sense 55
The Beneteau Sense 55 has a huge salon, a galley with 14 linear feet of counter space, and three staterooms each with their own double bed and en suite head. But that's only the beginning of the story.

The Beneteau Sense 55 is a sailing yacht that might make reformed powerboaters feel right at home with ease of handling, room, and comfortable amenities. The cockpit table moves up electronically to be a dining table, down for cocktails or all the way down to become a sun lounge. The exceptionally open and airy interior also includes plenty of convertible seating and tables, along with a full galley that offers an ocean view. More...

Manitou 25 SES Flip SHP
Entertaining, watersports, cruising -- or why not all three? The Manitou 25 SES Flip SHP offers the space, comfort and performance needed for most summertime family missions.

The Manitou 25 SES Flip SHP is a premium quality pontoon boat with a host of standard features that make her equally facile at entertaining, watersports or simply cruising around the lake. Quality materials and lavish use of wood give the interior of the Tiara 50 Coupe a classy look and her engineering is all-American.

The Tiara 50 Coupe is chock full of warm, dark woods, modern fabrics and luxury materials that are sure to capture the imagination of premium-oriented boaters. Cruisers Sport Series 328 Bow Rider:
No Missions Impossible

Cruisers Sport Series 328 Bow Rider
The Cruisers Sport Series 328 Bow Rider can host a small army of friends for cruising, picnics, grilling or towing watersports by day, be a sunset cocktail platform in the evening and yet also function as an overnight cabin cruiser with sleeping and living accommodations comfortable enough for a couple.

The Cruisers Sport Series 328 Bow Rider combines the best of an XL bowrider with a large mid cabin with standing headroom suitable for overnighting comfortably by a couple. She can be loaded with up to 16 friends and family for dayboating, in what we think is one of the best-looking boats in class. Take a look and see if you agree. More...

Tracker Targa V-18 WT:
All Welded-Aluminum w/ 20-degree Deadrise

Tracker Targa V-18 WT
The Tracker Targa V-18 WT's deep cockpit has a high windshield that should keep anglers and crew dry in most conditions.

Even though the Tracker Targa V-18 WT is built to be one of the more affordable boats in class, her build quality leaves little to be desired, according to our test captain. The all-welded heavy gauge aluminum modified deep-V hull (20-degree deadrise at the transom) has a diamond coat finish with industry-exclusive acrylic powder coat paint and clear coat. The walk through windshield is tall, providing lots of protection on the northern waters where this boat is most at home. More...

Yamaha VXR:
RiDE Hard -- But Stop Quickly

Yamaha VXR
The Yamaha VXR features a new “RiDE” system which allows the rider to decelerate in half the distance and change between forward and reverse from a left-hand lever.

The Yamaha "RiDE" system features an especially-designed reverse bucket that's electronically controlled by the BCU (Boat Control Unit) to deflect and vector the thrust of water from the jet pump nozzle in several directions when deployed in reverse/deceleration mode. The vents on the side have been designed to provide maximum turning thrust when deployed in reverse/deceleration mode. More...

Sailfish 320 Express Walk Around:
Rugged Offshore Express Fisherman

Sailfish 320 Express Walk Around
The Sailfish 320 Express Walk Around promises a dry ride in any reasonable fishing or cruising weather.

The Sailfish 320 Express Walk Around has the handsome lines of an express cruiser combined with easy step-up access to the side decks and bow for working and energetic gamefish around the boat. She is a well-equipped package that gives up nothing in the bluewater fishing department. Carolina flare, high freeboard and the closed-bow express design make her a good sea-keeping boat, as well as providing what seems to be a bit more cabin space than usual in this genre. More...

Bayliner 185 Bowrider:
Competitive Price, Competitive Performance

Bayliner Watersports
Our test captain found the Bayliner 185 Bowrider to be a good all-around watersports platform when equipped with the optional Flight Series package.

The Bayliner 185 Bowrider is available in a "Flight Series" watersports package as well as fishing and preferred equipment packages. Our captain tested the watersports package and found it well-accoutered for all sorts of towing action. The $3,536 "Flight Series" watersports package includes a tower, a pop-up tow pylon, plus a swim platform extension with a SeaDeck non-skid pad. This provides plenty of space to gear up, or to just relax after the gear is put away. A Bimini top, hull color, graphics and SS hardware is also included. Lesson of the Week

Using Sound Signals To Alert Other Boaters

Captain Steve Smart Boating Cover
A vessel leaving a dock in a busy channel should make its intentions clear by sounding off one long blast.

This week Captain Steve goes over sixteen short video clips and guidelines on using sound signals to alert other boaters of your intentions on the water. By using specific sound signals boaters can communicate whether they want to pass another boat to port or starboard, cross in front of a slower boat even though they are the give-way vessel, and several other things. These are basic procedures which all recreational boaters should be aware of. The videos presented this week are part of BoatTEST.com’s Boating Course which is USCG-approved. Watch these video boating lessons every week on BoatTEST.com.
