Yamaha VXR:
New "RiDE" Digital Control System

Yamaha VXR
The new Yamaha VXR balances racing performance features and price to provide a compelling PWC option. The addition of the advanced RiDE system technology provides excellent handling and maneuverability.

The Yamaha VXR is a performance-focused watercraft design that provides riders with much of the performance of a race-inspired vehicle, without the racing price. The new RiDE system delivers several advancements in control and safety including deceleration and the ability to switch from forward to neutral, to reverse rapidly without removing hands from the handlebar. We put this machine and the RiDE system to the test last month. More...

Cruisers Sport Series 298 Bow Rider:
Big Water Bowrider

Cruisers Sport Series 298 Bow Rider
The Cruisers Sport Series 298 Bow Rider has the seating capacity of many pontoon boats, but is a lot more fun to drive -- and she's built to take on big water when necessary.

The Cruisers Sport Series 298 Bow Rider is a luxury-level sportboat with an exceptionally comfortable ride at speed in a chop. Our test captain reported that she cut through wakes and waves with hardly a bump. And despite her considerable displacement, she was quick to respond to the helm. She is built to the same high standards of the brand's mothership -- Cruisers Yachts. More...

MJM 50z:
Fuel-Efficient Cruiser
with Gyro-Stabilizer Standard

MJM 50z
The MJM 50z is a cruising yacht that can be handled by a couple or single-handed easily, yet she's capable of entertaining a large crowd of friends around home, and also is seaworthy enough for long offshore passagemaking.

The new MJM 50z is a remarkable Downeast cruiser and day-boat for picnics and entertaining. Remarkable, because there is nothing quite like her in class. She is built to CE "A" standards and she gets 1.0 nmpg at 21.6 knots when powered by triple Volvo Penta IPS600 diesels. We have tested her in both Long Island Sound and in the Atlantic off Fort Lauderdale and can attest to her natural stability. But just to put some icing on the cake, she comes standard with a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer. As we said, she is remarkable. More...

Regal 2000 ESX:
Sportabout with PowerTower

Regal 2000 ESX
The Regal 2000 ESX FasTrac hull design delivered a top speed of 48.1 mph in our test runs, and at a 24.4 mph cruising speed her range is 115 statute miles, allowing a 10% reserve.

One feature that can't be missed on the Regal 2000 ESX is the "PowerTower", a stylish towing arch that can be raised and lowered at the touch of a button. The 2000 ESX is 20'3'' (6.17 m) long and has an 8'6'' (2.59 m) beam, providing lots of space for abundant seating. The 20-degree bottom should deliver a smooth ride even when jumping wakes, and with a 40-gallon (151 L) fuel capacity, she carries 3 to 8 gallons more than most other boats in class. More...

Mercury Verado 200-hp:
Supercharged, Inter-Cooled Powerhouse

Mercury Verado 200-hp
The 200-hp Mercury Verado, top of the four-cylinder Mercury lineup, is a fuel-injected, supercharged outboard designed to be smoother, quieter and more powerful at low rpm, according to the company.

The supercharged Mercury Verado 200 is the company's largest four-cylinder outboard, and it's engineered to deliver a rapid windup -- a must for tow-sports -- as well as tremendous mid-range torque in a package that's easy on the environment, according to the company. An intercooler prevents pre-ignition, and the beefed-up lower unit handles the added torque and the stress on components after the boat catches air. More...

Tracker Pro Team 190 TX:
A Superior Painting Process

Tracker Pro Team 190 TX
The Tracker Pro Team 190 TX, like all Tracker aluminum boats, is powder-coated with the color and design desired. Then the hull is baked in a large oven to ensure the paint gives long-lasting service.

For years, Tracker Marine Group touted its low prices and virtually everyone missed an even more important aspect of their boats -- their high quality. All Tracker aluminum fishing boats have a baked-on, powder-coated finish. That paint job is even protected with a layer of clear coat. This state-of-the-art marine finish protects the aluminum from corrosion and keeps the paint job looking better longer. More...

Bayliner 642 Overnighter:
Practical Cuddy Sportboat with Style

Bayliner 642 Overnighter
The Bayliner 642 Overnighter is a handsome day-boat for harbor-hopping, but her overnighting capabilities make her a mini-cruiser as well.

Bayliner created the 21'4" (6.53 m) 642 Overnighter to be a snazzy-looking sportboat that can also offer a sheltered cuddy cabin for an occasional overnight. Her amenities make her a capable day-boat for family and friends, and she also delivers for watersports and general joy-riding. Perhaps most important, this new Bayliner has an attractive color scheme and hull side graphics. More...

Boston Whaler 345 Conquest:
Four-Season Fisherman

Boston Whaler 345 Conquest
A semi-enclosed hardtop pilothouse makes the Boston Whaler 345 Conquest a four-season vessel, and she's fully loaded to fish anywhere blue water anglers want to take her.

The Boston Whaler 345 Conquest is built for adventuresome anglers who like to take off for the fishing grounds in almost any kind of weather. This is not a fair-weather-only boat thanks to the enclosed foredeck and pilothouse. She is also for anglers who want to cover some distance, fish, overnight aboard, then return a day or so later without having to worry about a front moving in. Like all Boston Whalers, she comes fully-loaded with top-quality gear for saltwater fishing. More...

Jeanneau Leader 40:
Family-Friendly Sport Cruiser

Jeanneau Leader 40
Jeanneau’s line of family-friendly sport cruisers has just gotten a little bigger with the launch of the new flagship of the fleet, the Leader 40.

Jeanneau's Leader 40 features a Michael Peters-designed hull with his characteristic sea-kindly running surfaces to deliver a soft ride even in challenging conditions. The boat has a covered fresh-air dining venue and open-air, mini-galley in the cockpit and sun lounges aft. There's also a full galley down, and the forward master includes a bed that extends to a full 6'6" (1.98 m) length. An optional desk in the aft cabin transforms into a wash basin, and the entire interior area gets lots of natural light through windows and skylights. More...

Sea Ray L650 Fly:
Equipped with High-Quality Materials

Sea Ray L650 Fly
The Sea Ray L650 Fly has premium upholstery, woodwork, and hardware that will allow her to compete directly against top-tier boats in class.

Hardwood decking in the richly-appointed salon is laid out in a bracelet pattern, and the electrically-actuated china cabinet rises from the counter which is a great use of space as well as a sort of "gee whiz" touch for those getting used to the remarkable luxury of a Sea Ray yacht. Carpeting below is 55-ounce Stainmaster throughout, and beautifully-finished solid wood doors provide privacy. The master suite has an innerspring queen mattress, while Stidd helm chairs offer comfortable and handsome seating at the helm. More...

Beneteau MC4:
Retro Meets Contemporary

Beneteau MC4
While the Beneteau MC4 is compact relative to her larger siblings, the layout is open, lets in plenty of light and emphasizes ease of movement and open space. Inside and out her styling is contemporary and fresh.

The striking retro tulip bow line of the Beneteau MC4 marks her as a uniquely contemporary yacht of distinctly French-Italian origin. Details like a stainless bow plate contribute to a high-style affect -- she's a yacht that will be noticed arriving at any port worldwide. She comes fully-loaded for entertaining, but would also make a pleasing cruising venue with two staterooms including ensuite heads. More...

Design and Style Review

Nordic Tugs 39:
Tugboat Lines, Trawler Comforts

Nordic Tugs 39
The Nordic Tug 39’s design profile gets its inspiration from the large commercial tugboats that ply their trade up and down the west coast of North American from Alaska to Seattle and farther south -- but her interior offers the comfort of a cruising trawler.

The Nordic Tugs 39 is laid out as an ideal long-range cruiser or live-aboard for a couple who might want to try some Great Loop cruising or other extended voyaging in comfort. Heavy sound insulation quiets the generators, and engine room access is easy for the owner/operator. At displacement speeds the boat has a range of 1,427 nautical miles, with a 10% reserve. A small guest cabin provides room for occasional visits from friends. More...

Robalo R222:
The Difference Is In the Details

Robalo R222
The Robalo R222 was designed with lots of freeboard for offshore work and to be able to handle sloppy conditions.

If all good center consoles are outfitted pretty much the same, what sets the Robalo R222 apart? The answer is "the difference is in the details". Now, other boats might have some of these details as standard equipment, but precious few, if any, have them all: 1) Forward entrance to head, 5'5" (1.65 m) headroom and a Porta-Potti; 2) Imedge gel coat (the best and most costly); 3) High freeboard; 4) Kevlar reinforced keel laminate; 5) 21-degree deadrise at the transom; 6) Fold-down transom seat; 7) Cast-bronze sea strainers; 8) Four-bolt cleats; 9) Fuel anti-theft device; 10) 10-year hull warranty. Royal Entertaining at Home or Away

Ocean Alexander 90 Motoryacht
The Ocean Alexander 90 Motoryacht is a versatile yacht built in the best traditions of blue water naval architecture both to travel the seven seas and to entertain royally at home in tasteful, luxurious surroundings.

The Ocean Alexander 90 Motoryacht displays an open, airy interior thanks to oversize windows throughout, and the salon and sleeping areas are crafted to world-class standards with pretty much any materials the buyer chooses to request. Most important, the hull was designed by Ed Monk, Jr., and is intended to go most anywhere. Virtually all major items of equipment and appliances are sourced in the U.S. More...

Multi-Mission Runabout

Tahoe Q7i
The mission of the 20'6" (6.25 m) Tahoe Q7i is to provide the best of the runabout lineup with high performance looks and all the watersports features the company has to offer.

The Tahoe Q7i is a sporty runabout well-suited to all sorts of family day-boating and watersports. As part of the "Extreme" package the added optional wakeboard tower comes in black, and has a custom fitted Bimini, adding to the profile as well as the functionality of the Q7i. It's collapsible so the boat can still fit in a garage. There's an additional tow point at the stern as well as wet storage in the swim platform. More...

Meridian Yachts 441 Sedan:
Easy-Handling Sedan Cruiser

Meridian Yachts 441 Sedan
With two large ensuite staterooms below and six guest venues, there's plenty of room and private spaces to make cruising with two couples pleasant and comfortable aboard the Meridian Yachts 441 Sedan.

Handling around the docks is not a concern with the Meridian Yacht 441 Sedan even with V-drives because the boat has standard bow and stern thrusters with a joystick-like device for confident docking. With the Zeus pod drives, the vessel also comes with a joystick, but without thrusters. Either way, docking is a no-brainer. Our test captain found that the 441 Sedan handled as easily at speed as at idle, rolling a maximum of 12-degrees in hard-over turns, and maintaining a comfortable 5-degree running angle at cruise. Lesson of the Week

PWC Safety Tips - Part II

Capt. Steve Smart Boating Cover
PWCs are a lot of fun to drive, but like all boats they have their boundaries. Don’t let an inexperienced person go for a joy ride on a PWC.

This week Captain Steve goes over five lessons and guidelines on operating a PWC and some rules to follow. It’s tempting to want to play around on the PWC and perform stunts and jump wakes, but don’t attempt this if the rider is a novice since they can fall off, injure themselves coming off a wave, or hurt someone else. Also, just because a PWC looks like it can handle two or three riders doesn’t mean it was designed to carry that weight. Follow the capacity plate for the PWC. The videos presented this week are part of BoatTEST.com’s USCG-approved Boating Course. Watch these video boating lessons every week on BoatTEST.com.
