Yamaha 242 Limited S:
Important New Hull Modifications

Yamaha 242 Limited S
In the new 242 Limited S, Yamaha has addressed both high-speed and dock-side handling issues, creating an innovative, new patented design that sets its boats apart.

The 242 Limited S is the largest performance sport jet boat offered in the Yamaha lineup. The latest version incorporates an innovative new hull design that includes what Yamaha calls an "articulating keel". The net result is a jet boat that has excellent tracking characteristics at speed and more responsive low-speed control. Powered by the proven 1.8L 4-stroke, 4-cylinder, electronically fuel-injected engine designed specifically for watercraft, the 242 Limited S opens a new chapter in jet boat handling. Evinrude E-TEC G2 250 HP:
All-New Engine Is Fuel-Efficient

Evinrude E-TEC G2 250
The Evinrude E-TEC G2 250 HP is built on the first 2-stroke block specifically designed for direct fuel injection, resulting in better fuel consumption than before. The engine is said to have 20% better torque at 4000 rpm.

Evinrude's all-new E-TEC G2 250 HP includes integrated hydraulic steering: hoses coming from the steering assembly go directly to a casing integral to the outboard body itself. There's no external rod and cylinder exposed to corrosion, no third-party steering parts to complicate installation and adjustment. And these engines are the first 2-stroke outboards completely designed from scratch for direct fuel injection, according to Evinrude. The combustion chambers are optimized for complete combustion and a clean burn. More...

Chaparral 243 VRX:
54-MPH Jet Boat That Seats 12

Chaparral 243 VRX
The new Chaparral 243 VRX jet boat has a larger capacity than most in this category: she can hold 12 people (or, 2,006 lbs., whichever comes first). And, she is very fast.

The Chaparral 243 VRX is an XXL jet boat that displays the classic company styling with high freeboard, sweeping sheerline and stainless rubrail sloping down to join the integrated swim platform. The aggressive VRX graphics package makes her a head-turner, and the Kevlar-reinforced hull design delivers the expected smooth Chaparral ride, according to our test captain. He also liked the "exceptional" maneuverability (for a jet) around the docks, thanks to the lateral thrust control via steerable jet nozzles. More...

Cruisers Sport Series 278 Bow Rider:
Deep-V For Good Wake and Ride

Cruisers Sport Series 278 Bow Rider
With a deep-V bottom and high freeboard, the Cruisers Sport Series 278 Bow Rider delivers a soft, dry ride in most conditions. This model is designed for towing fun.

The Cruisers Sport Series 278 Bow Rider has a 22-degree deadrise at the transom which means she delivers a soft ride most anywhere. Our test captain found she leans 12-degrees into the turns, with a confident bite in the water, and there was no loss of speed during hard turning in his test runs. She also makes a capable wakeboat as our video demonstrates. More...

Family-Friendly Fishing Toon

Manitou 22 Encore
The Manitou 22 Encore Pro Angler's oversized center pontoon and lifting strakes turn her into a capable watersports platform just right for family activities as well as for reaching those distant fishing holes quickly.

Nitro Z-7:
Built for Comfort and Speed

Nitro Z-7
The bottom design on the Nitro Z-7 is what the builder calls its “Rapid Planing System" transom. Look closely and the stepped hull can be seen near the transom. Our tests show her fast out of the hole and she has little bow rise in the process.

The Nitro Z-7 delivered a surprisingly smooth ride during our test runs, with the test captain reporting no pounding despite mile-a-minute speeds. The 16-degree, variable-deadrise hull is a reasonable compromise between a flatter bottom for more speed and quicker planing, and a deeper deadrise for more comfort in a chop. We think Nitro has found the sweet spot with the Z-7. More...

Prestige 750:
Classic Seakeeping and Design

Prestige 750
With four staterooms and three heads, plus an optional crew cabin aft, the Prestige 750 is eminently suitable as an owner/operator family boat or as a professionally-crewed yacht. FYI -- the master stateroom is on the main deck and can't be easily seen in this drawing.

Our test captain reports that the Prestige 750 is like a small town all to herself – producing her own electricity, treating her own sewage, making her own water, navigating the high seas with an array of electronics comparable to most cruise ships, to say nothing of propelling a four-bedroom condo with luxury amenities anywhere in the world that her owner desires. For the yachting family, it's hard to imagine that anything was left out. More...

Sailfish 320 Express Walk Around:
Offshore Fisherman with a Unique Hull

Sailfish 320 Express Walk Around
The Sailfish 320 Express Walk Around has an emphasis on comfort, cockpit seating, over-nighting, and the kind of sea-keeping capabilities that only a closed-bow boat with a high windshield can provide.

The Sailfish 320 Express Walk Around delivers a smooth ride in most conditions thanks to the company's unique Variable Deadrise Stepped (VDS) hull. All three bottom panels of this stepped hull "warp" as they move aft. Forward their angle is steep for cutting through the waves with comfort, then "warping" from deep-V sections in the keel to flatter sections outboard. The overall result is a boat with a deep-V keel with flatter outboard sections for lateral stability at trolling speeds and at rest. More...

Grady-White Freedom 335:
1 of 9 Salty-Looking Dual Consoles

Grady-White Freedom 335
The Freedom 335 has a two-tone hull -- Grady-White's traditional light cream color above the cove stripe, and a sand-colored gel coat below -- a subtle contrast that adds surprising eye appeal to this classic Carolina-boat design.

Regular readers know that we like dual consoles built by fishboat companies. One reason is that they generally look salty and eschew sportboat frou-frou. Grady-White discovered that boaters liked dual consoles decades ago and has nine of them in its line-up. We think the builder's trademark Rybovich-inspired sheerline is well executed in the Freedom 335 dual console and is a look that will never go out of style. Her freeboard forward is higher, her bow is sharper, and the dark navy cove stripe that follows the sheer is classically elegant. More...

Volvo Penta V8-430:
"Big Block" Power in a 6.0L Engine

Volvo Penta V8-430
Volvo Penta's new 430-hp engine has been completely remapped from the 6.0L block and contains some of the latest technology, to produce more low-end and mid-range torque as well as a high top speed.

Volvo Penta's new 430-hp V8 engine takes advantage of several advances in technology that allow it to run smoother and cleaner while burning less fuel than the predecessor 8.1L block. Closed-loop cooling and Duoprop lower units come standard. Other attributes give it better hole shot times and better load carrying abilities than previously possible with the big block V8s which were heavier. More...

Boston Whaler 350 Outrage:
A Proven Bluewater Fishing Machine

Boston Whaler 350 Outrage
While the Boston Whaler 350 Outrage has enough comfortable seating and cruising amenities to keep the family happy, she is clearly designed to be a no-holds-barred offshore fishing machine that will appeal to the keenest and meanest anglers on the dock.

The Boston Whaler 350 Outrage comes fully loaded for serious offshore fishing. The large lounge on the front of the console not only adds to the comfort level on long rides offshore, but massive, lockable storage underneath includes room for dive tanks, 5-gallon buckets, removable bins and six fishing rods. A 23-gallon livewell aft is big enough to hold a variety of baits for blue water action, and two giant in-deck fishboxes have optional freezer plates to keep the ice from melting and the catch sufficiently cold. Lesson of the Week

PWC Requirements and Rules

Captain Steve Smart Boating Cover
PWCs have earned their rightful place in the boating world and their owners have responsibilities just the same as do those of bigger vessels.

This week Captain Steve goes over four lessons and guidelines on PWC laws and being a responsible PWC owner. PWC owners should know the local laws before heading out on a PWC. Remember PWCs can only run during daylight hours between sunrise and sunset since they do not have any running lights. The videos presented this week are part of BoatTEST.com’s Video Boating Course which is USCG-approved. Watch these video boating lessons every week on BoatTEST.com.
