ZF Single-Engine Joystick Pod Drive Introduced!

ZF Single-Engine Joystick Pod Drive
ZF's new single pod drive with joystick was introduced last week at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show and could revolutionize boating in the small size ranges.

ZF announced last week the introduction of a pod drive system with docking joystick control for single-engine applications up to 480-hp. This new product could be revolutionary for the marine industry because it will bring the ease of joystick docking to tens of thousands of boaters worldwide who prefer single engine propulsion.  The new ZF system incorporates both its proven pod drives with its own bow thruster and black box software to control the system. New Boat

Princess V52:
An Ideal Boat For the Owner/Skipper
Who Enjoys Entertaining

Princess V52
The Princess V52 has both enclosed and outdoor entertaining areas on the main deck. Her enclosed salon is the first in a V Class yacht of this size, says the builder, and is fitted with a large lounge, wet bar and sunroof. The helm is handy to the lounge, ideal placement for the owner/skipper to entertain guests while running the boat. Look for speeds in the mid-30-knot range with standard power.

One of the most interesting 50-ish-foot boats to hit the water this year is the Princess V52. Designed for the owner who wants to run the boat himself, but who doesn't want to be segregated from his guests while underway, the V52 has an enclosed deck salon that places a complete helm station alongside a comfortable lounge and bar. Combining two separate living areas on the main deck, a hydraulic swim platform, a sliding sunroof and a full galley and dining area belowdecks, the 53'5" (16.28 m) overall V52 might be the best entertainment platform around in this size range. Her twin diesels are aft, and spin conventional props through V-drives – this makes room for a full-beam master stateroom amidships; combined with a forward cabin easily convertible between a double or V-berths, the V52 will accommodate either two couples or Mom, Dad and the kids without berth angst. Model Update

Hatteras GT60:
Nothing Finer from Carolina

Hatteras GT60
Her long, clean foredeck, sinuous sheerline, sharp forward sections and dramatic flare are tip-offs to the Hatteras GT60's North Carolina ancestry. Hatteras combines these proven design traits with modern laminate construction and big diesel engines to create a big, fast convertible that sets a new benchmark for sportfishing boats. Top speed? The builder says 41 knots with twin 1,900-hp Caterpillars.

It's always big news when Hatteras comes out with a new boat, but now the venerable North Carolina builder is introducing a whole new line: The GT Series will be "faster, stronger and more luxurious than ever," says the company. First on the docks is this GT60, unveiled to the public last week at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show. Designed to appeal to both hard-core fishermen and cruising yachtsmen with an eye toward performance, the new boat combines traditional Carolina exterior styling with Hatteras's renowned construction and engineering. The 59'10" (18.20 meter) hull has sharp deadrise and lots of flare forward for a comfortable, dry ride in the rough Atlantic; resin-infusion keeps the weight down, allowing speeds up to 41 knots, according to Hatteras. To as she looks more like a custom-built yacht from the Outer Banks or Palm Beach than a production boat from New Bern.  The accommodations plan is more open than we're used to from Hatteras, with galley up or down, and four available layouts. New Boat

New Sea Ray 450 Sedan Bridge:
She's Got Zeus Drives, By Jove!

Sea Ray 450 Sedan Bridge
We infiltrated the Sea Ray plant to grab this spy photo of the new 450 Sedan Bridge, due for introduction early next year.  A redesign and re-engineering of one of Sea Ray's most popular models, the new 450 SB will be powered by 480-hp Zeus pod drives, with bigger engines optional.

Sea Ray is revamping its 450 Sedan Bridge, changing its propulsion from V-drives to Zeus pods and restyling the boat's exterior. Although the secrecy surrounding a boat under development can rival anything you'll find at the CIA or MI6, nevertheless has obtained photographs of the new Sedan Bridge under construction, months before its planned introduction. Scheduled to be shown privately to a select group of invitees at Yacht Expo in early December, the 2011 450 SB will be officially unveiled to the public either at the New York Boat Show in January, 2011, or at the Miami show in February. In the meantime, we'll pass along all we know about the boat. If you want to learn what else our spies told us, click here.

New Boat

Nord Star 40 Patrol:
Built in Finland for IPS Power

Nord Star 40 Patrol
Nord Star's 40 Patrol was designed from the keel up for pod power; with twin Volvo Penta IPS 600s, she'll run at 40.6 knots, cruise economically in the mid-30s, according to Volvo. The flying bridge, shaded cockpit and wide swim platform turn this Scandi boat into a warm-weather cruiser, too. Many have been sold for boating in the Med.

You can always count on the Scandinavians to produce interesting boats, and the Nord Star Patrol line is no exception. Top of the line is this 40 Patrol, which combines a quasi-military profile with an inviting flying bridge and wide swim platform. Built by Linex-Boat Oy, a family-owned company based in Kalvia, Finland, the 42'6" (12.98 m) LOA x 12'6" (3.85 m) beam 40 Patrol is designed for folks who cruise in a wide range of sea and weather conditions, not all of them friendly. CE-certified for offshore service, the Baltic-tested 40 Patrol rides on a modified-V hull that balances seaworthiness, speed and comfort; twin Volvo Penta IPS600s push her above 40 knots, but smaller, more economical engines are available. She sleeps six in three cabins, but what we like most is her cozy pilothouse. To find out why, click here...

Revenger 31:
RIB Able to Take Comfort in the Worst Weather

Revenger 31
Speed thrills with dual racing-style, powered helm seats.

You can imagine the response most, at least here in the western world, would give if you said “let’s go out for a spin today,” when today’s weather calls for 12’ seas and Force 8 winds! You probably would be hard pressed to find anyone who wanted to go out in anything in that weather. But then there are the English... We were introduced to the Revenger 31 at the Southampton, England, Boat Show. They tell us it has been challenged with that weather and is a fully capable boat as a tender on any ocean-going ship or yacht out there. She is powerful enough to be someone’s only boat with many of the amenities of today’s sport boats, including ski towing ability. See what we thought about it...

New Boat

New Bavaria Sport 33:
Also Available in a Hardtop Version

Bavaria Sport 33
The Bavaria Sport 33 was designed to replace the company’s popular Sport 32, and it adds a few frills to the menu, among them 1’ (.3 m) in length, a little height, a new cockpit layout, and a second stateroom.

Bavaria yachts are made in Giebelstadt, Germany, a county long known for building refined machine tools. Formerly known as Bavaria Motor Boats, Bavaria has proven to be a serious competitor in the sport yacht market and has developed robust sales.  With solid GRP below the waterline, a GRP grid stringer system and all bulkheads glassed to the hull, Bavaria yachts are strong enough to earn a CE category B rating, which, among other things, means that they can withstand gale force winds of Beaufort Force 8 (34 to 40 kts) and wave heights of up to 13’ (4 m). But all that is a secondary issue for most of us who are concerned with the luxury and dock appeal that these boats possess. For that story, we turn to the full report to see how German engineering is reflected in a sport cruiser.

A Look Inside

Regal 44 SC Video:
Why She's a Giant Killer!

Regal 44 SC
The Regal 44 Sport Coupe is a two-stateroom, two-head design with a salon below that is hard to beat.

It is well-known in the boating industry that the Regal 44 Sport Coupe is tough competition for any brand...yup, we said any brand. She is not a new design, but she just keeps getting better and better as Regal updates, modernizes and tweaks, making a good thing better. This week we asked Capt. Steve – that oh, so traditional downeaster – to take a video look at the interior accommodations of the Euro-styled Regal 44 so perhaps we can discover what makes her such a giant killer in the 44’ express cruiser class.  Watch the video and see why...

Carver News

Carver 44 Sojourn:
She Maxes Out Livability

Carver 44 Sojourn
The Carver 44 Sojourn is designed for family cruising and maximized living space. The boat is huge and we’ll show you how to make it even bigger.

Carver's 44 Sojourn sits squarely in the middle of the builder's 11-model family, from 36' to 56'. The concept of this boat is to provide affordable, comfortable cruising accommodations for two couples or a family. The emphasis in boat building these days is at the stern, and Carver has certainly zeroed-in on that aspect of the boat to provide plenty of space for all sorts of activities. With its large bridge deck the 44 Sojourn can be used for day cruising and entertaining; Carver says that 12 people can sit here. There is no doubt that this will be the focus of the boat. We'd go for the optional items that would make her an all-weather, long season cruiser -- the hardtop with full enclosure and the full wet bar with fridge, ice maker and sink. Then you can party until the cows come home, rain or shine. Let’s join Capt. Steve as he takes a look at this innovative vessel...

Marquis Yachts 420 SC:
A Good Boat Gets Better

Marquis 420 SC
With a length overall of 43’7” (13.3 m), a beam of 13’11” (4.2 m), and a draft of 3’7” (1.2 m), the 420 SC isn’t the biggest yacht out there, but her design, innovations and panache rival her much larger cousins.

Marquis doesn’t exactly build inexpensive yachts, nor do they intend to. Its up-market brand has a level of attention to detail that is a big improvement over some “mass-market” names in the same size range. What sort of quality are we talking about here? Look: cabinets are all cut from the same piece of African zebrano wood so grains match perfectly, outside decks are all teak, inside decks are Brazilian cherry,  and the cockpit expands or contracts at the push of a button, depending on your entertainment needs. Most important, it was designed specifically for IPS propulsion, so you can have both joystick control and optimum performance from the hull. It’s all in a day's work for Marquis. Let’s take a closer look at the Marquis 420 SC and delve deeper into what quality means to this builder. View our Marquis 420 SC report here...

A Real Star from the Jersey Shore

Henriques 42 Express
The Henriques 42 Express is a serious fishing vessel.

If you take a real good look at the Henriques 42 Express, you’ll see a well-built, nicely finished sportfisherman that will get you out to where the fish are and safely home in comfort, but also in a certain style that could only be born out of a long tradition of serious, day-in and day-out offshore fishing.  She is a semi-custom boat so have it your way.  Watch the test video...

Dockside Review

Boston Whaler 370 Outrage:
The Battle for Center Console
Supremacy is ON!

Boston Whaler 370 Outrage
Boston Whaler packed in a lot of innovation in its 37'6'' (11.4 m) x 11'6'' (3.5 m) fishing machine, but did they get it right?

Larger center consoles are giving full-sized sportfish boats a serious run for their money. When Boston Whaler first pulled the curtain back on its 370 Outrage in Miami, everyone was impressed. But that wasn’t good enough for Whaler and they continued to tweak the design to get it just so. Then along came the Norwalk, CT, show, and the 370 was rolled out again, still with much fanfare. Now, the 370 (v2.0) is nearly 1100 lbs (499 kgs) lighter, but still heavy on features. This is a serious contender for king of the center console wars, but is it worth the price, or overpriced? Well, in our opinion...

How to Prevent Your Boat From Sinking at the Dock

Your boat is four times more likely to sink at the dock than while underway.

Captain Vince says: "It was a remarkable chain of events. After an early morning fishing trip, I went to work while my buddy stayed to clean the boat. But when I returned for another excursion that evening, the 25-foot center console was sitting low in the water. The boat wasn’t leaking and skies had been clear, yet the bilge was full and the batteries were dead." Find out why this happened and how to prevent it from happening to you...

New Test of Shurhold
Buff Magic

Seen here is the headlight lens of a 2005 minivan that has become dulled by the sandblasting effects of road debris. We have just brushed on a coat of Buff Magic in preparation for buffing out.

The team at Shurhold recently told us they had designed and formulated their Buff Magic product with jeweler's rouge to be an effective metal polish, as well as a buffing and polishing cream. They tell us it is effective on oxidation, clear coat staining, surface rust, tarnish, and plexiglas scratches, among some of the applications. We have tested Buff Magic on boats before, so this time we wanted to notch things up a bit and conduct a challenging test, on a vehicle headlight lens. So did the Buff Magic claims hold up? Find out why we still recommend Shurhold products to our members and readers here...

Just five years ago CEO Derek Carter lead a management buyout, but now the board of directors for the equity owners have hired Deloitte to suggest "strategic options" -- which usually means a sale or recapitalization of some sort. The last several years virtually all of Britain's builders of large boats have been acquired by new owners. Read the latest...

Accident of the Week

Fire Claims Old 58' Motoryacht Off Miami

No one was hurt last Friday afternoon as fire broke out on this old 58' motoryacht near Biscayne Bay. Three people were aboard when the fire broke out.

We are reminded once again that owners of older boats must be extra vigilant when it comes to their fuel and electrical systems. While diesel fuel is considered "safe" by many boaters, the fact is that a broken line spurting fuel on a hot turbo will cause a fire that can often quickly get out of control. Preventive maintenance, an automatic fire suppression system in the engine room, and air intake closures are indicated for all diesel-powered boats, and particularly older ones. The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation. Read more...

Boat Buying #8

Engine Selection for
Express Cruisers and Fishboats

Engine SelectionEngine Selection
Both of these boats are express models. The Cruisers Yachts 520 at the left is an express cruiser and the Cabo Yachts 45' at the right is an express fishboat. Both have some things in common, but are as different as night and day.

Engines are the most important component in your boat. In some cases your engines can be more important than the brand of boat itself. Engine selection requires the buyer to get serious about exactly how he plans to use the boat. The decisions can be doubly perplexing because like all boats the one you buy now will be put up for sale one day, and the engine could be a determining factor as to how fast it sells and for what price. This week we will look at some considerations that buyers should be aware of in express fishboats and express cruisers. More...
