Brief Summary

The Yamaha 1200XL is big, fast, and one of the quietest 3-cylinder machines on the market today. The 1200XL is powered by a 155-hp Yamaha jet engine, which gets this rocket out of the water and running in no time.

Key Features

The Yamaha 1200XL has a lot of perks rolled up into one not-so-small package. It is one of the most ergonomically friendly watercrafts featuring a Quick Shift System which offers five different trim angles with a total range of 24 degrees. An electronic information display center shows speed, rpm, fuel, oil and battery levels, overheat warning, trip distance and more. The padded boarding platform gives the swimmer or skier a comfortable climb back on, and a spray rail around the bow will keep you dry when cruising. Plus an 8-gallon cooler will keep you and your crew refreshed all day. To see other boats like this, check out our KAWASAKI lineup of personal watercraft tests.

Captain's Report

The Yamaha’s 1200XL Limited offers high performance and ample space. At just 10’4 inches in length and under $8,000 list, it turns out her size is as compact as her price. Out on the water, our test results show this screamer turned in a heart- quickening 60.7 mph at the top end. Even when you let up on the throttle and settle in at cruising speed the 1200XL loafs along at a still speedy 41.9 mph. The key to the 1200’s performance is the 155-hp engine, and at 1,176 cc it’s the largest displacement powerplant Yamaha builds. It has hi-performance, ceramic-coated aluminum cylinders, three 44-millimeter Mikuni carburetors with accelerator pumps, and an electronically-controlled exhaust valve that automatically adjusts the exhaust-port timing for optimum performance. Below the waterline, a multi-chined deep-V hull provides great all-around handling and exceptional rough-water capability. But perhaps the most impressive thing about the 1200 Limited is that it has significantly lower exhaust emissions than most other PWCs. And thanks to Yamaha’s Sound Suppression System, it’s one of the quietest 3-cylinder machines on the market.
