Captain's ReportThe Yamaha’s 1200XL Limited offers high performance and ample space. At just 10’4 inches in length and under $8,000 list, it turns out her size is as compact as her price. Out on the water, our test results show this screamer turned in a heart- quickening 60.7 mph at the top end. Even when you let up on the throttle and settle in at cruising speed the 1200XL loafs along at a still speedy 41.9 mph. The key to the 1200’s performance is the 155-hp engine, and at 1,176 cc it’s the largest displacement powerplant Yamaha builds. It has hi-performance, ceramic-coated aluminum cylinders, three 44-millimeter Mikuni carburetors with accelerator pumps, and an electronically-controlled exhaust valve that automatically adjusts the exhaust-port timing for optimum performance. Below the waterline, a multi-chined deep-V hull provides great all-around handling and exceptional rough-water capability. But perhaps the most impressive thing about the 1200 Limited is that it has significantly lower exhaust emissions than most other PWCs. And thanks to Yamaha’s Sound Suppression System, it’s one of the quietest 3-cylinder machines on the market.
