Brief Summary

It’s always heartening to hear that when customers speak, builders listen. So is the story with Wellcraft and their many 290 Coastal owners. They wanted a boat to which they could upgrade without leaving the brand. The response was to task the design team at Wellcraft to create the 340 Coastal. It is a great mix of fishing and family features with the legs to get out and back. We caught a glimpse of her at the New York show and had Capt. Steve give us a tour.

    Captain's Report

    Wellcraft 340 Costal
The 340 Coastal is Wellcraft’s answer to the owners of 20-something boats who want to step up.

    Something’s Fishy...

The cockpit has seating all around that folds up under the gunwales, leaving you room to fish up against the padded bolsters. The twin Yamaha 350’s were still below the max of the allowable horse power of 750 for this boat, and given her 13,500 lb (6,123.5 kg) weight, that should move her along just about right. The usual fishboxes were present under the deck, and in the forward section of the cockpit, there was a sink, plumbed for fresh and salt water, nestled between a livewell, and a galley up electric grill.

    Wellcraft 340 Costal
The cockpit is roomy and well appointed with sink, bait prep, and grill. The helm deck had a fridge and wine rack.

At the inside of the transom, a flip open panel reveals a pump room with access to all filters, pumps, through hulls, and sea cocks.

    Helm Deck

Moving up a step to the helm deck, there is ample seating for gathering around the captain. A sink lies to starboard with a refrigerator underneath, and tucked neatly next-door, a pull out wine rack. Under the helm seat is an icemaker.

    Wellcraft 340 Costal
Check out the sink, fridge, and pull out wine rack. Clearly not your everyday fishing boat. Note the grab rails around the counter and courtesy lights at deck level.

The helm is comfortable with a double wide helm seat. All controls are within easy reach and visibility is only slightly blocked from the side by the hardtop supports. There is a built-in footrest for when sitting on the seat with the bolster down. With the bolster up, your feet are in a recessed area under the footrest. And a feature that is now common on Wellcraft boats, the steering knob.

    Wellcraft 340 Costal
Steps lead up to the bow via a walkthrough windshield. The helm seat is double wide. A refrigerator and icemaker are conveniently located.

Up overhead at the helm is an E-Plex touchpad controller for all the ships electrical. A very neat feature that is repeated in the cabin. (Note: this E-Plex system was featured in another article and you can read about it here.).

    The Cabin

The cabin is both roomy and nicely laid out. Immediately to port, as you come down the companionway, is the galley. Basic features only, such as a single burner stove and small dual voltage refrigerator. The countertop is Corian. Forward is the V-seating that naturally converts to a berth by lowering the table and adding filler cushions. Slightly higher, however, are Pullman berths. A great feature on any boat, and a welcome addition here. A 12,000 BTU air conditioner is standard.

    Wellcraft 340 Costal
By simply lifting the seat backs and securing them to hooks in the overhead, Pullman berths are a perfect addition to any bow quarters.

Coming around the starboard side, the head is not too large but large enough to satisfy its purpose. A Sealand vacu-flush toilet is standard. Continuing aft is a mid berth also with a table that lowers to form a double. A privacy curtain closes off the berth to the main cabin.

    Wellcraft 340 Costal
The mid cabin is roomy enough, and the curtain provides privacy. Kids will love it.

(6,123.5 kg), she holds 382 gallons (1,486 L) of fuel and 56 gallons (212 L) of water. Outboard engine choices are straightforward and split between three manufacturers.
