Captain's ReportMicro Center Console With an Upscale LookBy Captain Keith BurtonNow here is a boat that is sure to draw some stares at the harbor. Not because it’s big, or even flashy looking. What will make people want to see this boat is its small size and remarkable features. It’s called the Triumph 120 Center Console or 120 CC, and it should be a good seller for the company.ConstructionThe 120 CC looks from a distance to be a diminutive inflatable center console. It has the rounded gunnels of an inflatable and the stubby bow, but this boat is built in a one-piece mold from Triumph’s proprietary Roplene process. This process uses small polyethylene pellets and foam compressed in a mold to create a hard, lightweight, impact-resistant hull that is virtually unsinkable and easy to maintain.One of the main characteristics of the Roplene process is that the finish on the exterior of the hull is not glossy as on fiberglass boats, but semi-glossy. It is a different look for a solid boat, but it is very durable and the finish does not age in the sun. And on the 120 CC, the look is just right.Small Tender UseWhen we say lightweight, we mean lightweight. The boat without its engine weighs in at only 450 pounds. Plenty light to use as a small tender. It has a beam of just 5 feet, 7 inches, which makes it roomy enough to move around carefully. There is also adequate foot room around the center console, but being such a small boat, moving around is a relative term.The 120 CC is attractive in a utilitarian way and offers enough room for three people onboard, though two would be recommended as space is tight. The ConsoleThe center console is placed just behind the midpoint on the boat and it features a forward seat with a storage compartment below, and a wraparound stainless steel handrail just above the boat’s small acrylic windscreen. There are stainless steel tie-down eyes at the bow and stern.The helm doesn’t have any instrumentation but it does have two cup holders and the throttle. An upscale-looking stainless steel steering wheel is part of the package. Beneath the steering wheel is a fairly large compartment for storing gear.The main seat is large enough to two slender adults and is nicely styled with a pleated vinyl and attractive blue piping. The Triumph logo is also stitched in the backrest. The seat’s backrest is framed with tubular stainless steel supports that wraparound the back of the seat. It’s an impressive look for such a small boat. Two small storage bins are located for more gear below the seat.Stern FeaturesAt the stern, two more covered compartments flank the engine area to port and starboard, and there is room for a portable fuel tank, but not much more.Handling and PerformanceOver the water the 120 CC moves confidently and handles most wakes and waves without drama. The boat is very stable and is fun to drive with light and predictable steering, but it is not speedster. The ride is pleasant for two people but we would recommend that if the passengers are heavy adults, one person sit in the seat forward of the console and another at the helm, even though there is room for two at the helm. That helps balance the boat better forward and aft.For anyone thinking about a small inflatable boat, the Triumph 120 CC might be a better choice. You don’t have worry about fishing hooks punching holes in the fabric tubes, and its rugged unsinkable nature makes it ideal as a boat for youngsters on a day at the lake.But its best attributes might just be that it looks good. And that is saying a lot in a boat that is only 12-feet from bow to stern.
