When Tiara Yachts introduced the 50 Coupe in 2013, the manufacturer was already planning to build a 50 Flybridge on the same hull. The theme that Tiara unveiled in the 50 Coupe is carried on in the flybridge model with an open salon layout that features solid hardwoods and contemporary furniture. The focus of the new boat’s bridge deck is entertaining and it features a wet bar and plenty of seats including an aft back-to-back lounge that converts to a large sun pad.Below decks, owners can add a third stateroom in lieu of the standard utility room and Tiara offers a choice of hydraulic swim platforms to accommodate tenders or personal watercraft.Tiara powers the 50 Flybridge with twin 725-hp Volvo Penta IPSII 950 pod drives with Joystick Plus control.
Centerline Flybdrige Helm.
The upper helm has a center console with Garmin electronics package and the double-wide helm seat adjusts on an electric slide.
Aft back-to-back seats on the flybridge convert to a large sun pad.
Boarding With Ease.
Side deck engine air intakes have built-in steps for easy boarding from a slip.
Composite flybridge construction and aluminum windshield frame structure.
Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit.
The high-end automotive style instrumentation includes two 15” screens that display all the engine diagnostic readouts, a GPS Chartplotter, Garmin 604 HD 6 kW open array radar and a depth sounder.
Remote Control on Stidd Seat Arm Rest.
The engines are controlled with a joystick so why not have a remote control for the electronics on the instrument panel?
The 50 Flybridge has 40,000 BTUs of air conditioning in the salon, 16,000 BTUs in the master stateroom and 10,000 BTUs in the VIP cabin.
Convertible Sleeping Options.
In the forward VIP stateroom, the queen berth splits into two twin, enhancing the boat’s versatility.
Got You Covered.
It seems as if seat and console covers are always an option, but Tiara makes them standard for the furniture and consoles on the flybridge, in the cockpit and even for the foredeck sun pad and windshield. Now that is a classy way to outfit a standard boat.
The Flying Bridge
Since it’s the newest part of the boat, we’ll start with the flybridge. It’s accessed via open teak steps in a stainless-steel frame on the port side of the cockpit. We like that there is a hatch to close off the steps.
Aft to starboard is a large back-to-back lounge that converts to a sun pad. Forward are side lounges that wrap around to each side of the flybridge helm. At the aft end of the port lounge is a top-access storage locker with a drop-in cooler to starboard. Overhead, the hardtop has a pair of Bomar deck hatches.
The flybridge helm has a Garmin electronics package plus Volvo Penta engine monitoring screens. The steering wheel is positioned on the port side of the dash so that a co-pilot can join the captain at the double-wide seat that slides fore and aft electronically. A Clarion CMS5 Bluetooth stereo head unit that accepts USB/MP3 plug-ins is powered by a JL Audio M Series digital amplifier with four JL Audio speakers and a JL Audio 8” subwoofer. On the aft side of the helm seat, the flybridge entertainment center contains a refrigerator, sink, cutting board and wastebasket.
The aft section of the flybridge extends aft over part of the cockpit to provide shade over the two aft facing lounges that are just outside the sliding salon doors. Across the stern is a forward-facing lounge with storage in the base. The 50 Flybridge comes standard with a fiberglass two-position cockpit table.
Two stainless-steel gates close off the passageways from the cockpit to the swim platform that has a swim ladder tucked up beneath the starboard side. Transom storage is in a large locker, part of which can be home to an optional electric grill on the port side.
The foredeck sun pad provides a great spot for catching rays and for convenience, it has cupholders and handholds. To keep the decks unobstructed, the Lewmar CPX3 windlass is concealed beneath a hatch and has a tethered remote control in the anchor locker. We like that the 50 Flybridge comes with a 44-lb. Lewmar DTX stainless anchor, 40’ of chain and 200’ of anchor rode as standard equipment.
The Great Indoors
Sliding glass doors open to the galley, which is the first indoor area passengers enter on the 50 Flybridge. To port, stainless-steel sinks and the three-burner stove are recessed beneath the Quartz countertop. Credit to Tiara for including the microwave oven as standard equipment and we like the use of drawer-style Isotherm refrigerator and freezer instead of a space-eating old-school side-by-side refrigerator/freezer.
A Step Up.
A single step up from the galley puts passengers on the salon and lower helm deck, which is covered in solid teak. Three skylights with built-in blinds help illuminate the area, as do LED lights. All the salon windows have Duette blinds as well. To port, the lounge has seating for four or five around a high-low table.
To starboard abaft the lower helm, the 40” LCD TV retracts into the counter when not in use. It’s part of an entertainment system that includes a Polk Audio HT3000 SurroundBar and Blu-Ray player. The salon stereo is a Polk PA450UM Bluetooth head unit with a USB/MP3 input powered by a JL Audio M400/4 digital amplifier with two JL Audo 7.7” component speakers and a JL Audio 8” subwoofer. There are independent wall-mounted stereo controls for the interior and cockpit.
The lower helm station has the Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit with two 15” display screens that provide all engine functions and diagnostics as well as navigation/chartplotting functions and a Garmin 604 HD 4’/6 kW open array radar. There are also Garmin VHF200 and GHS10 radios. Volvo Penta electronic engine controls are in a flat along the starboard gunwale with the joystick aft.
Take A Seat.
Thanks to the remote control in the right armrest, the driver can scroll through the various functions of the Volvo Penta Glass Cockpit without having to leave the comfort of the Stidd captain’s chair. The user can also adjust the seat fore and aft and raise it or lower it to improve sightlines.
Tiara offers the standard 50 Flybridge with two staterooms and a utility room below decks or owners can upgrade to a third cabin. Crew quarters are available in the stern and Tiara will provide quotes for these on request. A stackable washer and dryer come standard in the utility room, which is located at the foot of the companionway stairs that are adjacent to the lower helm.
The full-beam master stateroom in the 50 Flybridge has the queen-sized berth positioned across the boat’s beam with storage in the base. The hatch opens on twin gas struts to facilitate retrieving gear. To port is a settee and the master quarters come standard with a Samsung 29” flatscreen TV and Blu-Ray DVD player with Bose Soundlink portable Bluetooth speakers.
Because the VIP quarters have private entry to the day head, each stateroom essentially comes with a private head on the 50 Flybridge. Both the master and day heads have full fiberglass shower stalls that are separate from the VacuFlush toilet and sink. Additionally, each head has air conditioning vents and exhaust fans to rid them of steam.
Power and Performance
Tiara equips the 50 Flybridge with twin 725-hp Volvo Penta IPS II 950 pod drives with Joystick controls. We haven’t tested the boat yet, so we haven’t collected numbers. Tiara tested the boat with IPS II P4 props and a 1.7:1 gear ratio. With a full fuel, water and waste load and three people on board, the boat ran 38.7 mph at 2654 rpm. Best estimated cruise range at 90% of total fuel capacity was 313 miles at 2108 rpm where the boat ran 28.5 mph and burned 49.3 gph.
Tiara builds the 50 Flybridge with a solid fiberglass bottom and balsa coring in the hullsides and deck. Fiberglass laminates are rolled out by hand and wetted out with premium resin. Stringers cored with wood and foam are encapsulated in fiberglass. The hull-do-deck joint is capped with a stainless-steel rubrail with a rubber insert. Hardware includes eight 12”-long stainless steel cleats.
The 50 Flybridge’s fuel system includes Racor fuel/water separators for the engines and Onan 13.5 kW generator. There’s also a five-port oil changing system for the main engines and generator. The electrical system includes a 50-Amp 65’ shorepower cord with an adapter for 30-Amp service. Four engine batteries and six house batteries provide DC power and 80- Amp and 16-Amp chargers keep the batteries energized.
Options to Consider and Price
The Tiara 50 Flybridge should appeal to a variety of buyers from a small family or two couples who like to take extended cruises to people who like to entertain a crowd at the yacht club. The extra large flybridge is laid out to accommodate a crowd and the centrally positioned helm enhances the flow of this deck.Positioning the galley between the cockpit and salon is a smart move for serving passengers in both areas and the lower helm will appeal to techno-savvy buyers with the remote control for the electronics system in the armrest of the Stidd captain’s seat.Twin 725-hp pod drives push the boat to speeds just under 40 mph and the maneuverability that these propulsion systems are known for should give the boat spirited performance and handling.Tiara deserves credit for giving the 50 Flybridge a healthy standard equipment list, including covers for all the flybridge, cockpit and foredeck furniture and for including such items as a windlass, microwave oven and trim tabs.
