While some may have a “don’t fix it if it’s not broke” attitude towards everything they come in contact with, the simple truth is, you need to either update or decide you can’t compete. Tiara correctly chose the former business model and as such, their popular 3100 Open has gone through a few changes over the years, but through it all has remained a popular model that's an easy and logical step up to an inboard cruiser.

While this venerable model may have gone through some changes over the years, its staying power in the marketplace is impressive.
Morphing into the Future
Tiara gave birth to the 3100 Open in 1979 and she became an instant hit. Even though the boat was popular, she had a reputation for delivering a bit of a wet ride in chop. In 1992 Tiara made significant changes to the hull and interior. The most notable changes to the hull were an increase of roughly four degrees to the deadrise, which tames the wet ride quite nicely, and the introduction of prop pockets that reduced draft and increased performance due to the reduced angle of the shafts. As for interior upgrades, a forward bulkhead was removed, which opened up the salon layout significantly. A V-berth/settee has given way to an island berth with a settee to starboard that converts to a second berth so sleeping for four is still an option. In 1996 a transom door was added which both fishermen and dive enthusiasts were thrilled with. The cockpit has always remained a versatile and comfortable example of how an “open” boat should be with a double wide helm seat and plenty of seating at a dinette aft. One significant upgrade to this newest model is the standard hardtop. It has been re-designed to include molded-in recesses for the spreader and courtesy lights in addition to better accommodating the frameless windows, handrails and vents. As an aside, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention its outstanding looks. The helm is hinged which makes accessing the back for installation or maintenance an effortless task, one you will be thankful for when paying installers by the hour. The panel is large enough to hold a 15” (38 cm) display with room left over for ancillaries such as autopilot and VHF. Engine gauges reside above the panel and don’t take up valuable space for electronics.
Visibility at the helm is excellent with a single support in the center of the two separate windshields. The 16” (40.64 cm) stainless destroyer wheel is standard and a full Raymarine electronics package is available as factory installed (add $33,180).The double-wide helm seat is electrically actuated to adjust roughly 6” (15.2 cm) fore and aft; there's storage below. The aft facing mezzanine seat has additional storage accessed through the seat back. Two drink holders and a handrail are between the forward and aft facing seats.The curved lounge to port has a fiberglass table with drink holders, and a commanding view of the surroundings. The portside companion seating features a chart holder under an acrylic glass lid. The salon is accessed via a center mounted companionway and accommodates 6'4" (1.9m) of headroom. The L-shaped lounge seating to starboard has storage below, and it easily converts to a Pullman berth for over/under sleeping for four. The galley features a single-burner electric cooktop, a microwave, and a 2.3 cu ft (65 L) d.c. refrigerated drawer with bins and bottle storage.
In our opinion, which seems to be shared by many, calling this a fishboat is not accurate. She is actually much more than that and many have purchased the 3100 Open for use as an extraordinarily capable cruiser. The baby boomer generation that is at maturity age now is largely on a tight schedule, and as such, waiting at remote destinations for weather to clear in order to get home just won’t do. For that solution, the 3100 has found a definite niche. While over-nighting has always remained a possibility, the layout of the cabin is such that it lends itself to short stays with little privacy if cruising with more than a couple. While the galley is expertly finished and inarguably gorgeous it is still, to say the least, modest, but when have you ever cooked a full meal while on an overnight excursion… ever? Beyond cruising, utilizing the open layout as a dive boat for scuba or snorkeling has its merits. There’s plenty of room for stowing and putting gear on, even if you bring along a lot of friends. And of course, if you love to fish, there are a multitude of options that can bring your 3100 Open up to tournament level. Whatever your mission on the water is, short of offshore oil rig supply or perhaps harbor tug, you’ll find that the 3100 Open is well suited for the task. She has the functionality and looks that make her at home in a heavy sea, soaked in fish guts, or at a dockside restaurant with a jacket and tie.
