Captain's ReportThe Unique Feel of LuxuryBy Captain Keith BurtonSelecting a comfortable, even luxurious pontoon boat among the myriad of choices on the market is made a lot easier when the manufacturer has an ear for its customers. Such is the case with the Tahoe Sierra Elite 24. The engineers at Tahoe were clearly listening when they designed this richly-featured pontoon.Starting with its built-in recessed docking lights, this boat impresses right away with its sturdy design and quality materials. Looking closer, you will see that a real concern for fit and finish was at the top of the list. A strong 4-inch rub rail will keep the dock at bay as well as the sturdy cast aluminum bumpers at the corners.Bow FeaturesOn board, this 24-foot long, 8-foot, six-inch beam boat is positively expansive. We like the way the designers curved the two bow bench seats toward the forward entry door, it is an elegant touch that many other pontoon boats miss. A small table is included that is easy to install and remove. As you would expect in a pontoon boat, storage under the seats in plentiful. What is unusual is that Tahoe uses sturdy and durable aluminum to frame the seats, there is no wood or plastic used. We also like the extra thought that went into the storage compartments under the seat backrests. For example, on the starboard side, a built-in trash bin with its own push-button lid is included. While we are on the subject of the seats, Tahoe uses a special soft high-grade vinyl and multi-density foam for their seating materials, which keep their shape after compression and will last longer than materials used on many other brands of pontoon boats. Getting aboard amidships is also made easy with large port and starboard access doors. At the ControlsThe helm is attractively designed and laid out and features elegant black on cream-colored gauges with gold bezels set in a burlwood-like dash. Centrally located is a built-in GPS fishfinder. Lighted rocker switches control auxiliary electrics and a Clarion CD player radio is close at hand just to the left of the steering wheel. The steering wheel tilts so getting it in a comfortable position is a no-brainer. A foldout cupholder is just to the left of the helm and the fire extinguisher is just below the throttle.Just forward of the helm is a small entertainment area with a freshwater faucet and sink. Below that are two storage compartments. One is small and ideal for storing a wallet and personal items, and below that, a larger compartment is big enough for a small cooler. Also on the console is a convenient deck light.Surprising LuxuryThe rear seating area features an L-shaped bench seat with storage below in both the side and rear sections. Tahoe’s designers didn’t forget the cupholders as they are almost everywhere onboard. At the port corner of the bench seat is the GPS antenna. Now something that you would not expect on a pontoon boat is located within a compartment under on the port side of the bench seat. Try this, a built-in wine cabinet.Located under the padded cover is a rack that holds four wine glasses and below that a holder for four bottles of wine, and even an ice bucket. How’s that for a luxury touch? Imagine the smiles of your guests when you open up that compartment for the first time.At the stern is a large sun pad big enough for two people, which opens on hydraulic struts to reveal a canvas changing room for that occasional need for some onboard privacy. The changing room is big enough to handle a portable toilet if so desired. And at the stern is a boarding ladder with plenty of room to get onboard.PerformanceOver the water the Tahoe Sierra Elite 24 is a model of serenity and comfort. The ride is smooth and undramatic, just right for cruising the bays, lakes and bayous of your favorite watering spots.Equipped with a smooth and quiet 60 hp Mercury EFI Big Foot 4-stroke outboard, we saw a top speed of 18.8 mph and a cruise range of 250 miles at an economical speed of 8.8 mph. While this is not a fast boat, it is perfect for most occasions when just being on the water is what you enjoy.Overall, the Tahoe Sierra Elite 24 offers a wealth of amenities, a lot of room for your family and friends and some truly luxurious features that are not found on other pontoon boats.
