With single outboard power from Yamaha or Evinrude, the 250 OB SCX EXT Crossover has a top speed faster than 50 mph, according to Starcraft. Having the power source on a bracket well aft of the transom has numerous advantages. It improves performance because having the outboard farther aft gives it more trim leverage and better overall efficiency. Additionally, using an outboard opens up the cockpit and lets Starcraft develop a comfortable aft-facing lounge on the stern. Finally, for the saltwater environment, the outboard can be fully tilted out of the water, which enhances longevity. She comes with a stout standard-equipment list and with four available option packages, the 250 OB SCX EXT Crossover can go from basic to bling’d out, depending on buyer preference.
The wide sponson-like chines at the bow provide lift on takeoff and the steps or air intakes in the 250 OB SCX EXT Crossover’s chines at amidships help break adhesion with the water’s surface, improving hole shot and enhancing overall efficiency.
While many manufacturers make these items options, Starcraft includes bow filler cushions, a portable table, a Bimini top with boot, a freshwater sink with faucet, a private head with a portable toilet and tilt hydraulic steering all as standard equipment.
Starcraft provides a Lifetime Hull Warranty on the boat, plus a 6-year warranty against blistering.
The 250 OB SCX EXT Crossover can be ordered with four options packages, depending on the focus of the intended use. The Fishing package comes with a livewell and a bow fishing seat and base. The LS upgrade includes snap-in cockpit carpet, lighted cup holders, LED illuminated speakers, two rear-facing speakers, a remote touch pad for the stereo on the transom, a transom shower and underwater lighting. In the SCX Sport package, buyers get a black dash, windshield frame and wakeboard tower with board racks and speakers, a snap-in carpet and grey interior. Finally, the SCX Super Sport has underwater lights, aft facing speakers with an amplifier, lighted speakers, exterior accent lights, a silver windshield and wake tower and black or gray Bimini with blue or green interior accents.
The 250 OB SCX EXT Crossover’s bow is a versatile seating area with filler cushions and a receptacle for a removable table. The lounges on each side can be used for booth-style facing seating or passengers can insert the optional fillers and stretch out on each side. Families will also like the depth of the bow seating. There’s storage in the base of the permanent bow seats and in the step that leads to the bow platform. Out on deck, the boarding ladder stores beneath a hatch to keep passengers from tripping over it.
A private head compartment in the port console of a bowrider or deckboat in this size range is pretty standard, but the one on the 250 OB SCX EXT Crossover looks extra large with plenty of seated headroom. It comes standard with a portable marine toilet and buyers can upgrade to a porcelain pump-out version and add a pressurized freshwater sink.
Across from the head, the helm console has storage in the base and a standard array of gauges that includes a tachometer, a speedometer, fuel and volt meter. The AM/FM stereo has a port for an MP3 player. The bucket seat has a flip-up bolster so drivers can choose to run the boat from a sitting or leaning position. A digital depth finder is optional.
The 250 OB SCX EXT Crossover’s cockpit has the right combination of space and seating capacity to make it easy for passengers to move around. To port is a bucket seat with three cup holders outboard under the gunwale. Aft to starboard the standard wet bar has a pressurized freshwater sink and plenty of space in the base. Just abaft, in the companionway to the stern, a hatch opens to reveal space for a portable Igloo cooler. We like that Starcraft provides a gate to close off the passage to the stern to keep little ones from getting too adventurous.
One of the biggest benefits that the outboard motor provides on this boat is the convertible stern lounge. When the seats are in the “Up” position, it offers back to back seating with space for two or three people in the cockpit while still providing a spot to relax on the stern while watching the kids swim. Lower the seat with one hand and it stretches out to a large sun pad. In either position, this lounge will be a favored spot on the 250 OB SCX EXT Crossover. The absence of a sterndrive or inboard engine means an extra-large storage locker beneath this seat. On the stern and to starboard is a second four-step ladder and owners can equip the boat with an optional freshwater stern shower.
Starcraft laminates the 250 OB SCX EXT Crossover with a 22-mils thick gelcoat backed up by alternating layers of 24-oz. woven roving that have a 6” (15.24 cm) overlap between the hull and deck for added strength. Additionally, the hull-to-deck joint is screwed together. The gelcoat is protected by a Blister Guard barrier. The stringers are encapsulated in fiberglass and foam-filled for flotation and improved sound-deadening. Additionally, for a cleanly finished appearance and better fit, the cockpit is a full fiberglass liner

Deckboat buyers are looking for versatility and the choice of outboard propulsion for the 250 OB SCX EXT Crossover further enhances this boat’s do-everything mindset. She will more than likely get better fuel economy than a single sterndrive and the absence of an inboard or sterndrive engine in the stern creates opportunities for designers to develop seating and valuable storage. As mentioned earlier, the ability to trim an outboard all the way out of the water when the boat is in a slip is a big plus for saltwater boaters. Her sheer size and V-bottom pickle fork design should make the Starcraft 250 OB SCX EXT Crossover a capable performer as a cruiser when late day winds pick up at the local lake or bay.In the cockpit or bow, the boat feels deep, which should provide security for the kids and even pets. The freeboard and molded-in spray rails should keep the passenger areas dry from spray. We like that the boat comes with such a complete standard equipment list and that owners have the option to keep things basic or make a bolder statement with four upgrade packages that include eye-catching graphics.
