    All fuel consumption numbers are the total for all engines in the boat. Speeds are measured with Stalker ProSports radar gun or GPS. Fuel consumption (gallons per hour) measured with Floscan digital fuel-flow meter or by on-board factory-installed diagnostic instruments. Range is based on 90% of published fuel capacity. Sound levels determined using Radio Shack digital decibel meter on A scale. 68 dBA is the level of normal conversation. Time to plane is measured from start of acceleration to formation of rooster tail behind boat.

    Captain's Report

    Tested By Capt. Bob SmithAfter four years, the Fiesta Vee 270 remains one of Rinker’s top selling models in the cruiser line. This year they’re offering the Volvo D4 diesel engine for the first time. The 270 is the smallest Fiesta Vee in Rinker’s line offered with an optional diesel and she is heavier than other boats in her class. Rinker is also one of the only companies offering a dingy package in a cruiser this size.New ChangesThe Fiesta Vee comes standard with full canvas and has an optional radar arch which was on the model we tested. Some of the key new features for the Fiesta Vee 270 are the all new Omnova vinyl used throughout the craft. Interior fabrics are new and are very rich in color. Rinker is also using new solid surface countertops in the galley. Silver and beige twisted pile snap-in carpet is another standard item this year making clean up much easier and the floor much cooler to walk on. The stern now has a four-step boarding ladder rather than a three-step, making it much easier for everyone to get back onboard. There are two pull up cleats located on the platform for attaching water toys or just a drift line while hanging out at the back of the boat. New options for this year are a vacuum flush head and macerator with Y-valve. Also as an option is the Sea Key system regardless of power, a stainless steel safe and a color GPS system.LayoutOur boat was outfitted with the optional electric windlass system and standard remote control spotlight up front. The cockpit area was very spacious with a port side lounger that wraps around to the center allowing several to join you underway. You can easily seat three more on the stern bench. At the ControlsThe helm system is comfortable with a sliding adjustable wide seat. Gauges and switches are arranged logically and within easy reach of the driver. There are eleven cup holders spread throughout the cockpit and helm area. Just behind the helm seat is a wet bar location with single faucet sink with a covered trash receptacle. A 25-quart carry-on cooler keeps enough ice and drinks for a great day on the water. Comfortable CabinStepping on below, you’ll find much more space in the cabin than expected. Forward is standard style V-bench seating that converts easily to a berth with privacy curtain. The galley has a refrigerator/freezer, sink, single-burner alcohol electric stove and solid surface countertop with adequate storage. The head features a vanity with pull out faucet for the shower, 6-gallon water heater to support the shower, and pumpout toilet. The aft cabin has an oversized mattress, four port lights for super natural lighting and ventilation. The steps down to the cabin are open in the back to keep the stern berth from feeling closed in.SpecsRinker’s Fiesta Vee 270 for 2005 measures in at 27’10” in length overall with a beam width of 9’1”. She weighs in at about 7,350lbs. dry and carries 100 gallons of fuel and has a fresh water tank capacity of 33 gallons. Her draft is reported to be 22” with the outdrive up and 36” with the outdrive in the lower position. The 270 has a bridge clearance of 9’2” with the arch and 7’ without it. Standard power options are a MerCruiser 350 Mag MPI with 300-hp and Bravo Two sterndrives or a Volvo Penta 5.7L Gi DuoProp with 280-hp. You have the option to choose between five MerCruisers and four other Volvo Penta power plants up to 375-hp. PerformanceThe Volvo D4 diesel delivered excellent low end response and torque as well as top end speed and control. After figuring out all the electronic controls and sequences, we fired it up and easily backed her out for testing. She handled with ease, which was good since we only had two or three inches on each side of the hull between us and the dock on one side, and the Fiesta Vee 320 on the other side. The engine box was insulated well enough that typical diesel vibrations were really not an issue. I did notice that there was some rattling at idle and Rinker liked my suggestions of adding some bumpers or gasketing around the engine hatch that would virtually eliminate that problem.We tested the Rinker Fiesta Vee 270 on a fresh water lake in northern Indiana with two people on board and 1/3 of a tank of diesel. Temperatures were pleasant at 65 degrees and winds were about 10 knots with a chop of 1-2 feet. Our test boat was powered with Volvo Penta’s 260-hp D4 diesel power plant, which had dual G4 props. One was a three-blade and the other a four-blade. We found the 270 to be a nimble performer as she was on plane in 6.1 seconds and was capable of cruising along at 30 miles per hour in 10.1 seconds. At 3000rpm she was running 29 miles per hour and burning 8.4gph. At this speed you can expect to run about 310 miles on a tank of fuel. At wide-open-throttle she was turning about 3640rpm for a speed of 37.5mph and fuel burn of 13.8gph. At this speed you should get about 245 miles on a full tank of fuel.If you want a little something different with diesel power Rinker’s Fiesta Vee 270 is a good place to start your search. In my opinion, it is a smart choice for weekend cruising because it gives you enough space, good standard features, and an economical ride.
