Captain's ReportThe Total PackageTested By John CacciuttiThe 232 Cuddy Cabin has been and continues to be one of Rinker’s most popular-selling models -- and for good reason. It is a superb watersport towboat like the Captiva 192, but its added length and extra weight help it handle rough water better.FeaturesIn addition, the cabin provides a place for children to nap and a couple to overnight in. It also blocks the wind when you’re riding and makes the cockpit a warmer, cozier, more enjoyable place for long-distance cruising. Inside, the dinette has enough headroom for most families to sit without slouching, and there is a hide-a-way porta potty under the galley step.Perhaps the most alluring element is that the 232 sells for under $40,000, which keeps it within the grasp of many buyers and represents one of the best values in its class. Rinker has a reputation for giving people "a lot of boat for their money", and this is perhaps best exemplified in the 232.Plenty of RoomAn L-shaped seating area along the port and stern, plus the driver and passenger seats, provide seating for up to six people. Storage areas below the bench seats are lined with plastic inner shells. These large tubs are not removable, but they keep belongings from falling down into the bilge or absorbing condensation off the inside of the hull.Behind the WheelThe helm area drips luxury. Chrome bezel Faria gauges adorn the dash, surrounded by a rich, polished wood finish. The three-spoke steering wheel design is straight off a high-end automobile and sports a combination of water-resistant padded faux leather and wood accents. The steering wheel also tilts for convenience and is equally as comfortable to use while standing or sitting. Instrumentation consists of a tachometer, speedometer, trim position indicator, fuel level gauge, depth finder and more.To the right of the instrumentation are switches for the 12-volt lighting and accessories with individual circuit breakers below. This is an excellent location for the breakers because it would be hard not to notice when one of these trips.Another item that we applaud is the padded armrest for the driver’s throttle arm. This Rinker exclusive keeps the driver from having to suspend his arm in the air while struggling to maintain or change speed.Time to WakeboardSpeaking of holding speed, if you like wakeboarding, the Perfect Pass speed control option can make life a lot easier for the captain. It works just like cruise control in a car. The driver simply sets it at the desired velocity, and Perfect Pass maintains it.Innovative SeatsAn improvement for 2005 is the new Rinker Easy Rider driver and passenger seats. These innovative vented buckets swivel, so those in the front can join conversations in the stern, slide, and have integral springs to cushion impacts. Best of all, the front bolster under the thigh area flips up vertically, which increases seat height by approximately four inches. In this position, the bolster can be used as a leaning post while standing or a temporary seat that affords an unobstructed view over the windshield.PowerEquipped with the 280 horsepower Volvo Penta engine, the 232 took just 3.18 seconds to plane and reached a top speed of 50 mph. While the bow took a little longer to level off and settle down than the 232 Bow Rider, the acceleration curve was smooth and linear once on plane. With this power option, watersport enthusiasts shouldn't have any problem pulling the heaviest skiers and wake boarders to their feet, even when loaded with six people and gear. From bow to stern this is a terrific, full-featured, multi-purpose craft that boasts some surprising amenities for its low price tag.
