All fuel consumption numbers are the total for all engines in the boat. Speeds are measured with Stalker ProSports radar gun or GPS. Fuel consumption (gallons per hour) measured with Floscan digital fuel-flow meter or by on-board factory-installed diagnostic instruments. Range is based on 90% of published fuel capacity. Sound levels determined using Radio Shack digital decibel meter on A scale. 68 dBA is the level of normal conversation. Time to plane is measured from start of acceleration to formation of rooster tail behind boat.

    Captain's Report

Known in the boating industry as a value packed producer of family fun machines, Rinker offers the 232 Captiva. She is a contemporary styled, open bow platform that offers boaters all the bells and whistles that make boating more enjoyable. Rinker’s value priced boats are not striped down versions with a low price, but rather boats that come with many standard features that other builders tag on as expensive options.Starting in the bow of the 232, you will find the typical wrap-around seating configuration that is found on most bow riders. Chase lounges are supplied on the port and starboard sides, accompanied by stainless steel grab handles, cup holders, stereo speakers and storage pockets on the gunwales for small items like suntan lotion. The upholstery is comfortable and there is enough room for five adults. Additionally, there is storage under the cushions, with the forward center storage configured for your anchor rode.Access from the bow to the cockpit is via a folding windshield door. Here you will find a starboard side storage cabinet under the helm station. Directly across, is a small head compartment with a porta-potti. The head is a tight fit for most people, but a necessity in today’s family boat market. Also a necessity is the deep ski locker located in the sole of the cockpit. Unfortunately this locker does not use a latch that can be secured, as a result, the door will flap when the water gets rough.Rinker didn’t skimp with the helm design; the dash is tastefully done in simulated wood grain accents. Analog gauges provide the engine information, while a MerCruiser throttle and shifter provide the control. The only down side is that there is no armrest at the gunwale mounted throttle. After a long morning of pulling skiers, your right arm might be more pumped up than the skiers! The seating up at the helm is comprised of two-bucket seats that have a swivel lockout that is conviently located between your legs. This lever does double duty as the fore and aft slide adjuster. I liked how easy the seats adjusted and that I didn’t have to search around for a lever while underway. Although conveniently located, the seat lever does occasionally scratch the back of your legs. The bucket seats also have flip up bottom bolsters to help with maneuvering. The aft cockpit seating is comprised of an L-shaped settee that houses a storage spot for a removable, insulated cooler. Directly to port is a small seat and a tiny counter top that conceals a trash can under the flip up lid. The Captiva utilizes a portside transom walk-through. This configuration has become very popular with consumers because it makes for effortless transitioning and adds safety. At the stern, Rinker enlarged the molded swim platform by adding an extended platform, which houses the recessed, telescoping boarding ladder. The padded engine hatch makes for a comfortable sun pad, however, I was surprised to find that the hatch was manually operated. Two gas assisted struts help lift the hatch, but these really don’t do the job, as you have to give a good yank to get the heavy hatch up. Inside the engine compartment, you’ll find a large storage tub for snorkel gear or ski ropes. Our test boat was equipped with the largest engine available for the 232; a MerCruiser 6.2 MX. This motor produces 320-horse power to the Bravo III propellers. This combination performed well, with quick acceleration and a top speed of 54.9 mph. With a list price of just under $30,000, the Captiva 232 is a bargain. You will definitely want to upgrade the standard 5.0 liter carbureted engine package. With only 220 horsepower, the base engine does not have enough grunt to push the Captiva’s hefty 4,100-pound hull. Other than that, the 232 handles well, is comfortable and has tons of standard features.By Ron SvobodaTest Captain
