Brief Summary

By providing virtually everything necessary to go cruising and a lot of amenities that most other builders offer only as options Rinker has taken much of the guesswork and aftermarket expense out of the ordering its Express Cruiser 340. As a result, she should appeal to boaters moving up from sportboats who are not quite sure what is needed. The builder has included most everything needed as standard.

    Captain's Report

    Rinker Express Cruiser 340
The Rinker Express Cruiser 340 is the second largest boat in its EC Series; she measures 33'11" (10.34 m) LOA, has a beam of 11'4" (3.45 m) and has a dry weight of about 15,470 lbs. (7,017 kgs.)

The Express Cruiser 340 is built for comfortable cruising at a manageable size and a cockpit large enough for day-boat entertaining. By providing virtually everything necessary to go cruising and a lot of amenities that most other builders offer only as options Rinker has taken much of the guesswork and aftermarket expense out of the ordering of the 340. As a result, she should appeal to boaters moving up from sportboats who are not quite sure what is needed. The builder has included most everything needed as standard.

    Rinker Express Cruiser 340
The Express Cruiser 340 has a good-sized integral swim platform and cockpit seating designed for both cruising and entertaining. Her oversized dual helm seat is standard and has room for a navigator. Access to the foredeck is through the windshield.
    Rinker Express Cruiser 340
Below deck, the Rinker Express Cruiser 340 has a basic galley, a wet head with porcelain toilet and the ability to sleep six people in three areas.

    Distinguishing Features

    Virtually Fully Equipped.

Rinker has differentiated the Express Cruiser 340 from other boats on the market by loading her up with equipment that many boaters would like to have but often don't order when buying a boat to keep the total cost down. See the list below of standard equipment-- •

    A/C-Heat Reverse Cycle System.

    12,000 BTUs. •

    Bimini Top and Camper Enclosure.

    Icemaker, refrigerator/freezer

in the cockpit wet bar. •

    Transom Shower.

    Anchor windlass

and 30' of chain and 130' of line. •

    Radar arch

, with hinge and lights •

    Automatic fire extinguisher system

    in engine room. •

    Electric Engine Hatch.

    5 kW generator

, teak steps and hardwood flooring.

    Rinker Express Cruiser 340
The 340, pictured with an optional aluminum hardtop, has a functional stern swim platform and large transom trunk. The Navy Blue hull makes the boat look her best -- its an option and we'd go for it.

    Notable Features

Rinker claims that its Express Cruiser 340 line has the most cabin headroom in class. We haven't measured all boats in class so will take their word for it.

The Express Cruiser 340’s standard solid surface countertops and lids, hardwood cabin sole, wooden dinette table and upholstered items indicate an attention to both details of upholstery and style. Standard galley equipment includes microwave, 2-burner electric stove and stainless steel encased refrigerator/freezer.

The 340 is also equipped with a built-in blender and icemaker. A pressurized water sink with refreshment center, a pressurized transom shower and stowable cockpit table are also on board as standard equipment as noted above, and these items as well as others make the Express Cruiser 340 virtually a "turn-key" boat for entertaining.

    Rinker Express Cruiser 340
An open deck plan and seating configuration is built for comfort when underway and for entertainment. Molded steps lead up and through the split windshield for access to the bow.

An all standard Bimini top and camper canvas

is high quality, heavy construction. An aluminum hardtop is available for the Express Cruiser 340. The windshield connector panel is clear acrylic for an unobstructed view and standard with the hardtop.A heavy-duty windlass with bow foot controls, electric engine hatch lift and 5 kW, low CO generator with sound shield are also standard.

    Boat Inspection

    The Cockpit.

Passengers will step onto a large stern swim platform, and move through a walkthrough transom with trunk storage. There is a standard shower on the transom. Synthetic teak is available as an option on the swim platform. It certainly makes the boat look classier but some of our readers complain that vinyl teak gets very hot.Padded passenger seating is positioned to starboard, and a (stowable) table and entertainment center are located on the port side. The standard table can be upgraded to teak and we would recommend that.A stereo and remote at the transom are also standard.

    The Wet Bar.

In fair weather most time is spent in the cockpit on any express cruiser and the 340 is equipped to handle a party. Not only is their a sink in a solid surface counter, but there is also a standard blender. That is a lot of equipment to get into a wet bar console, but Rinker has done it on the Express Cruiser 340.We think that this is one of most noteworthy features on the boat.

    Rinker Express Cruiser 340
The helm and controls of the Rinker Express Cruiser 340 are all easy to see and easily at hand. A Raymarine C-95 chartplotter is standard and we like the placement as it is both angled toward the captain, but also in front of the navigator. In this way the captain can keep a sharp eye out forward and the co-pilot can read the fine print on the chartplotter. Note the dark color gel coat on the dash to reduce glare.

A 2-person double-wide pilot seat with flip-up bolster is a standard feature on the Express Cruiser 340. Also standard are compass, digital depth gauge and a Raymarine C-95, radar-compatible chartplotter. DTS digital shift controls (compatible only with the Merc power selection), 5-position tilt steering, trim tabs with LED control indicators and VHF radio are also standard.

    Walkthrough to the Bow.

Molded steps on the sliding companionway hatch lead up through the windshield to the bow. This arrangement is not unusual and allows the cockpit to be as wide as possible, pretty much eliminating side decks. Some people prefer the walkthrough windshield as they feel more secure. The important thing with this arrangement is to have hand rails on which to hold on to, something we would add to the Express Cruiser 340. Bear in mind that the hard part is descending back to the cockpit when leaving the bow.

    Rinker Express Cruiser 340
A view forward to the forward cabin/queen berth with privacy curtain. Hardwood floors are standard on the Express Cruiser 340. We like the cabinets over the portlights to starboard as well as the wood valance for sliding curtains.

    Going Below

Stepping down the standard teak steps into the cabin, passengers will note the ample headroom that the Express Cruiser 340 provides. The boat has an 11'4" (3.45 m) beam and the space below is divided into three areas -- open bow cabin for sleeping, the center section for the settee, table, galley and head, and the mid cabin which is aft and tucked under the bridge deck.

    Normal Layout.

This layout is pretty much standard among most boats in this size range as there is not much else a designer can do with the space. We think that Rinker has handled it about as well as any builder. Boats are distinguished in this area by the size and comfort of the settee which usually makes into a bed, and does in the case of the Express Cruiser 340; the size of the head, and the ease with which guests can enter the mid cabin.

    Rinker Express Cruiser 340
A view looking aft; the Express Cruiser 340’s cabin has comfortable seating and a roomy, pleasant feel that welcomes taller passengers.

    The mid stateroom

has a large U-shaped couch that converts to a double berth, a hanging clothes closet locker and under berth storage. There is only sitting head room on the starboard side, so this area can't be used for seating in the round. It makes an ideal place for kids to hang out, play board games or watch TV. There are filler cushions to make the space into a double bed and there is a privacy curtain.

    The galley

counter is on two levels, one for the two-burner stove top and one for the round ss sink with goose neck faucet. There is a microwave over the stove at a reasonable height, several drawers for flatware and utensils and a cabinet for other items. Is there room for dishes? How many and what size? We don't know, and this is a detail that should be checked out on any cruising boat, no matter what size. Every family has its own requirements.

    Rinker Express Cruiser 340
This view is of the forward berth on the Express Cruiser 340. Her pillow package and memory foam mattress are standard. Note that around the forward hatch is a styled soffit with lights, something we rarely see on this size boat.

    The forward cabin

is all berth with a memory foam mattress and privacy curtain. Here again, taller passengers will note the space afforded by the forward berth.

    Rinker Express Cruiser 340
The 340’s galley has Corian solid surface countertops, Brazilwood cabinetry and teakwood steps -- all standard.

    The Head.

The head has been fabricated with one large fiberglass molding with a gel coat surface to make it easy to keep clean. The sink faucet is the pull-out type which serves double duty as a shower wand. There is a solid surface counter top, and the toilet is a Tecma, “easy-flush" porcelain type with a holding tank.

    Interior summary.

Again, it looks to us as if Rinker has done as good a job as most in handling the interior spaces. What separates express cruisers here are the amenities, materials used, and the fit-and-finish of the joiner work and the upholstery. We have not tested and inspected the Rinker Express Cruiser 340 so can offer no opinion on those subjects. Consumers will have to judge for themselves.

    Performance Questions

As we have not tested the Rinker Express Cruiser 340 we cannot offer any information on this critical subject. All hulls are different and behave differently. Important questions to have answered are: time to plane, the degree of bow rise getting on plane, running angle, cruising speed, fuel consumption and range. Boats in class typically run from about 14,000 lbs. dry to 18,000 lbs. (6,350 kg to 8,165 kg), and at 14,100 lbs. (6,396 kg), the Express Cruiser 340 is definitely at the light end of the 34' (10.36 m) express cruiser range.

    Price with Typical Options

The manufacturer encourages buyers to check with their dealers, as MSRP information is just that -- "suggested retail price" -- and dealers may offer better pricing. As a typical measure, the Express Cruiser 340 packaged with Chili Red hull sheer and Dark Platinum boot stripe options, the Preferred Option Group with teak cockpit table, a Fabric Collections upgrade, 4 mooring lines, 2 fenders, boat hook, LED swim light, and auto glide trim tabs, and powered by a MerCruiser catalyzed 350 MAG MPI B3 engine will cost buyers about $276,000 -- MSRP.

    Rinker Express Cruiser 340
The Express Cruiser 340’s optional aluminum hardtop and enclosure. The hardtop has a clear acrylic windshield connector panel for unobstructed forward views. We like this cruising canvas as it turns the Rinker Express Cruiser 340 into a three-seas vessel.

With her standard features and amenities, we think the Rinker Express Cruiser 340 packs a lot of equipment into her standard price. She is definitely worth a look.
