RINKER 246 CAPTIVA

There have been a lot of changes at the Rinker boat company in the last few years and one of the biggest is the revised Captiva sportboat line. Ultimately, all the changes at Rinker have resulted in more choices for the consumer. The new Captiva 246 is now available in three dynamic configurations. Starting with the base model bowrider layout that can be upgraded to the R2 version, which is a decked out ski/wakeboard machine. And for you conservative types, there is a cuddy model that features a nicely appointed enclosed cabin.
But the one similarity between the three models is the cockpit. The aft seating is a large U-shaped lounge with a port side transom walkthrough.
An insulated cooler is close by just under the back seat, as is a miniature wet bar to starboard. Combine this with the removable snack table and the Captiva becomes a very comfortable entertainer.

The sporty helm gives the feel of a European performance car with a contoured tilt wheel taking center stage. Faria gauges are grouped for easy reading, and accessory toggle switches along with the stereo remote are within quick reach. On the companion side, Rinker installed a spacious compartment for changing into swim wear or for using a portable toilet. A convenient ski locker is situated between the two swivel bucket seats at the helm that feature flip-up bolsters and thick padding.
At the back of the boat is a large sun lounge with a multi-position pad that covers the transom walkthrough. Although a novel idea, I found the pad to be cumbersome and could probably do without it. On the other hand, the spacious swim platform at the stern is roomy and offers a locker large enough for a wakeboard. Additionally, there is a shower for rinsing off with and plenty of drinkholders.
At the other end of the 246, is a bow that has enough room for four people to enjoy the snack table. Under the forward cushion is a deep anchor locker for a fluke-style anchor and at the forepeak there is a useful boarding ladder for effortless beach access.
Where the Models Differ
The Captiva’s R2 model is destined for serious wakeboarders and skiers. It starts by adding to the base model a stout, tubular aluminum tower which can be equipped with speakers and board brackets. And, to help riders perform at their best, the R2 includes Perfect Pass speed control. Just set the unit to the desired speed and the electronic controller maintains that speed perfectly. No more getting mad at the driver!
While on the other side of the spectrum, the 246 Cuddy is the perfect choice for boaters looking for a day boat that they could spend the night on too. The cozy cabin provides a V-shaped lounge with table, which easily converts into a berth for two adults. There is some storage space in the cabin as well as a portable toilet neatly stowed in a secure spot.
All three of the boats measure in at 26 feet, 2 inches overall with beams of 8 feet 6 inches. The 20 degree deadrise hull will draw 36 inches of water with the sterndrive in the down position. And while the boat’s weight could not be determined at time of testing, it sports a 75 gallon fuel tank and a 10 gallon freshwater tank.
Since Rinker offers multiple engine choices from MerCruiser and Volvo-Penta, we decided to test the standard power package in addition to the top-of-the-line, 375 horsepower option. The base motor delivers 260 horses to the prop and gave us a top speed of just over 50 mph. We also calculated a cruise speed of 31 mph and 3.1 miles per gallon. With the big 496 Mag, the bowrider reached a top end of 57 mph and cruised at 39 mph delivering 2.7 miles per gallon.
Rinker has always given boaters more bang for their buck and the new Captiva gives even more with all the standard amenities, storage and comfort.
