All fuel consumption numbers are the total for all engines in the boat. Speeds are measured with Stalker ProSports radar gun or GPS. Fuel consumption (gallons per hour) measured with Floscan digital fuel-flow meter or by on-board factory-installed diagnostic instruments. Range is based on 90% of published fuel capacity. Sound levels determined using Radio Shack digital decibel meter on A scale. 68 dBA is the level of normal conversation. Time to plane is measured from start of acceleration to formation of rooster tail behind boat.

    Captain's Report

Tested by Capt. Bob SmithThe Ranger 521 VX rode in on a Commanche Trailer, which is a nice package including Road Armor Advantage coatings for long life, L.E.D. lights for long life, form fitting bunks for ease of loading and perfect matching to the hull and an electrostatic matching paint for your rig. Oil baths for the bearings with windows for visually checking the level is a great idea.Deck FeaturesThe model sports a Minn Kota 24 volt trolling motor out front that was easy to deploy and simple to operate with the foot pedal control. You don’t have to struggle to keep the batteries topped off and ready to power the gear, this rig carries its own three bank charging system, a Dual-Pro On-Board charger. The Garmin Depth finder up front keeps you informed of the bottom and where the fish are while your partner can look over at the helm and check it out while they’re casting. You can tell she’s a pro-ready rig; with three lockers and expansive bow casting area for rods. The port locker is capable of handling rods up to 8’, the starboard handles up to 6’6” and the center organizer handles up to 7’6” rods in row one and 7’ rods in row two. Just ahead of the buddy console is a small locker that can be a cooler. In front of the helm console is another storage area. HelmThe helm sports a competition series wheel with SeaStar Pro hydraulic steering that is smooth and responsive. Keyless ignition on this rig takes a lot out of the aggravation of a start and stop day. Once you key in your code in the morning, you are good to go for the next ten hours without needing to re-key, just touch the green button and hand on. The Runnin Rod Rack on the port side gives a safe and secure place to lay the rods down between holes and there is a grab handle for your partner to hang on to if they get a little uncomfortable with your driving, or the water gets a little rough underway. The rear casting deck is also quite large, even with the cockpit being pushed back for more room up front. The livewell separates two storage areas just behind the seats and access panels to batteries, oil and other accessories is across the back. Casting seats can be placed in positions in the back casting deck or the front casting deck.SpecsThe 521 VX measures in at 21’3” and has a 92 ½” beam. Although we tested her with a 225hp Mercury Optimax, she is rated up to 250 horses. The 521 has an integrated engine setback of 12”, a transom height of 23” and inside depth of 20 ¼”. Her hull weight is about 1860lbs and you can add up to another 1550 lbs of gear, people and outboard motor to the package. She has two 26 gallon fuel tanks for a tota 52 gallon capacity.PerformanceThe 521 ran like a machine on a mission. She handled easily taking turns effortlessly and with little to no slide. The keel on this rig really helps control it at low trolling speeds and at cruising and high speeds. The 521 leaped up on plane in just 4.6 seconds and was passing 30 mph in only 6.7 seconds. We had a 225-hp Mercury Optimax outboard motor on our test rig. She seemed to cruise best at about 2500 rpms, and burned about 4.8 gallons per hour and had a range of about 263 miles on a full tank. She topped out at 5650 rpms which burned about 21.3 gallons per hour and had a range of 161 miles on the tank. Sound levels were good for an outboard with a low of 66 dBa at idle and only 93 dBa at top speed. The sound deadening qualities of the added floatation was evident in the muffled hull noises at speed. If you are a pro on the circuit or fish like one and want the same comforts they enjoy, the 521 VX from Ranger is a good choice to consider.
