Captain's ReportThe 2200 Is an Impressive Entry into the Bowrider MarketTested By Capt. Vince DanielloWhen I first received the assignment to test Maxum’s 2200 SR3, I went surfing on the company’s website looking for preliminary information about the boat. Surprisingly, I couldn’t find any. I found several similar boats, but none with the SR3 moniker. A couple of days before the scheduled test, I was testing another boat at the same marina and hoped to check out the Maxum. Could I go aboard for a few minutes? No. Could I have a brochure? Not yet. Could someone at least tell me what SR3 is all about? Yes, but then he’d have to kill me. (He was itching for me to set up that quip!) The bottom line is that the company would not release any information about the new “3 Series” until after the unveiling at the annual dealer meeting. So when I was finally given the scoop on the new boat, was it worth the wait? The “3 Series” is basically just a bit more beam, an extended swim platform and new consoles. Big deal. But when I finally saw the boat it was a big deal. Those small changes made a huge difference in cockpit space, usable storage, and styling, making Maxum’s 2200 SR3 an impressive new entry into the bowrider market.Design and Layout The brochure claims the boat has seating for twelve adults. Our test boat had the optional lounge seating, which would comfortably handle nine, and I’ll grant that the standard seating arrangement will seat at least eleven, but who wants to carry that many people on a twenty-two footer? In practical terms, you and six or seven of your closest friends have plenty of space to relax, play, sun, and still have room to move about freely. This extra space came from widening the boat, particularly up near the helm, and adding an external swim platform in lieu of the integral platform found on previous models. Changing the platform essentially added a couple of feet of usable boat. With the extra length Maxum also designed in a large full width sunpad and a transom storage locker. The starboard-most section of the sunpad is removable to create a walk-through from the cockpit to the swim platform, with a dedicated storage spot for the cushion beneath the starboard gunnel. The starboard aft seat comes out as well to reveal a step for an easy transition from cockpit to walk-through. Another thoughtful touch, the port side of the sunpad lifts to form an adjustable chez lounge type backrest.Spacious Cockpit with Good Storage As for the transom storage, it’s huge. If the cockpit wasn’t so spacious I might complain that the storage locker is too big. There is also a freshwater shower very conveniently placed inside the locker and a remote for the stereo right next to the walk-through, where it can be operated from the platform or while in the water at the swim ladder. There is an additional large storage locker beneath the cockpit, a huge locker under the optional port side L-shaped lounge, and more storage forward. There is one more thing worth pointing out regarding the redesigned stern: The way the transom trunk slopes gently down to the swim platform somehow gives this boat a graceful appearance, much different than the look of an integral swim platform. The sun pad lifts to access the engine compartment, which also contains storage for the cockpit table and pedestal. Up at the BowOn our test boat the cockpit table was positioned on the port side by the L-lounge, which allowed unobstructed access to the walk-through. An additional base is provided so the table can be placed in the bow. Alternately, the bow seating area can be closed off with a filler cushion to form a second sunpad. There are plenty of handholds, particularly in the bow where they are needed most, and adequate drink holders. Unfortunately, the only drink holders in the bow are inaccessible when the sunpad filler cushion is installed.Helm StationThe newly redesigned consoles are stylish and include some thoughtful features. At the helm, the instruments are well placed and switches conveniently located. On the port side, the locking glove box protects the stereo from the elements, and a 12-volt outlet is perfect for charging your cell phone while keeping it safe. Just below the glove box, a second hinged door opens to reveal an insulated drink cooler. The bucket seats on our test boat were quite comfortable, and included stylish flip-up bolsters to allow a better view while docking or maneuvering. One thing I really appreciated, even with the bolsters raised were the levers for the seat slide and swivel functions which are tucked beneath the seat where they can’t bruise the helmsman’s calves.The RideBefore we left the dock I found a lot to like about this boat. Once we got underway, I discovered much more. The boat was quick, nimble, and responsive. The steering was exceptionally smooth, and the boat behaved predictably. All in all, testing the 2200 SR3 was a fun day on the water. Now if I can only find out about Maxum’s next top-secret project.

- Best cruise for the Maxum 2200 SR3 (2009-) is 35.6 mph (57.3 kph), and the boat gets 3.42 miles per gallon (mpg) or 1.45 kilometers per liter (kpl), giving the boat a cruising range of 154 miles (247.84 kilometers).
- Tested power is 1 x 220-hp MerCruiser 5.0L EFI.
