    Captain's Report

Tested by Capt. Ron SvobodaBrand new in 2004 to the Maxum line-up of fun, family machines is the 2400 SC. Developed as the inspiration for the next generation of Maxum boats, the 2400 SC meets the needs of customers wanting a modern, cuddy cabin boat. Engineers incorporated all their best ideas of space management and utilized convertible seating, making the SC a versatile, overnight boat to use for skiing, fishing or just cruising on a beautiful day. Wrapped in a 22-degree deadrise hull with a high freeboard and a tempered glass windshield, the 2400 SC produces a secure, dry ride.Transom StorageAt the stern of the boat is an innovative touch to a runabout. Most cruisers use the concept of a transom trunk, but Maxum has proven that it works great on day boats as well. It is the best spot to store snorkel gear, fenders and lines. The extended swim platform is large enough for several people and includes a hideaway ladder for boarding. Another good idea is the small, padded transom seat that is notched into the trunk’s hatch. Finishing off the stern on the starboard side is a roomy transom walk-through that can be secured by a padded door.Cockpit LayoutThe cockpit layout is available in two slightly different variations. Our test boat came equipped with the standard plan, which is comprised of an aft bench seat for three adults, a bucket seat for the captain, and a sleeper seat for the companion and observer. The convertible aft seating can be changed by removing jump seats, or by swapping in the snack table for any variety of seating arraignments. The center section is a fiberglass engine hatch that is assisted by a pair of long gas struts. Once opened, there’s plenty of room for checking fluids, but performing some maintenance items will be tough. Neatly recessed into the starboard side gunwale is a removable insulated cooler for beverages. You’ll also find sturdy, vinyl grab rails and padded coaming panels mounted throughout the cockpit.Seating Forward in the cockpit, on the port side, is a mechanized sleeper seat for two. By moving a couple of levers and sliding the seat forward, then aft, the seat becomes a sun lounge for one. Under the seat is a small storage compartment for sunscreen and charts. In the sole of the boat, between the forward seating, is a ski locker that is wide enough for several wakeboards. The HelmThe helm is where the designers at Maxum really excelled. The dash is high-tech with its pod style layout and aluminized trim and gauge bezels. The Premium Package displays eight separate instruments, giving you all you’ll need to keep an eye on the engine. Accessory power switches and the JBL stereo are mounted next to the steering column for easy access. A tilt steering wheel and flip-up bottom bolster on the captain’s swivel, bucket seat, will make for a more comfortable ride and complete the helm. One of my favorite aspects of this boat is the large, molded steps in the helm console. Theses steps, two- stainless steel grab handles and a sure-footed, non-skid deck, make the bulbous foredeck easy going. At the bow, is a jumbo anchor locker with securing hardware inside and anchor roller forward for quick deploying of the hook. The CabinA one piece sliding acrylic door, reveals a cozy, yet comfortable cabin. The fully lined cabin offers plush, V-berth style seating with a thick cushion. A filler board and cushions, convert the area into comfortable sleeping accommodations. Or, you can insert the snack table for a simple dining area. On the starboard side, an optional porta-potti is stowed neatly and concealed by a folding door. Topping off the foredeck is a large round Bomar hatch which supplies fresh air and light into the SC’s cabin.Swim PlatformWith the bolt on swim platform attached, the SC’s overall length measures in at exactly 26 feet. The hull’s beam of 8 feet, 6 inches will draw 36 inches of water with the Bravo One’s propeller in the down position. Her well appointed amenities brings the weight of this boat to a hearty 4,600 pounds. As you might expect, the boat does feel a bit heavy during acceleration and handling, but makes up for it when the water gets choppy.SpecsIf you opt for the upgraded engine package, which comes with a MerCruiser 350 Mag MPI, then top speeds of 49.2 miles per hour can be reached with the engine turning at 4,700 rpm. Cruise speed will be around 34.3 miles per hour at 3500 rpm, delivering 3.3 miles to the gallon and a 206 mile cruising range before fill up. Combining great fuel economy with modern conveniences and attractive styling cues, the 2400 SC is one cuddy cabin boat that should not be overlooked.
