Maritimo 470 Offshore Convertible (2011-)
Maritimo 470 Offshore Convertible (2011-)
Bill Barry-Cotter, CEO and founder of Maritimo, realized there was a niche in the convertible market that would slip neatly into the line-up with his popular 500 and 550 in the 40 to 50 foot luxury sport fishing cruiser market. By definition, the convertible must lend itself to both a sport fishing persona as well as a luxurious off shore cruising yacht. Maritimo has established itself as a leader in the convertible market that started back in the late forties and continues to be desirable, even in today’s economy.

Maritimo 470 Offshore Convertible

General Access and Swim Platform

As with most yachts this size, the 470 is designed for backing into the slip and entering from the swim platform or the sidedecks and two molded-in steps that take you to a spacious cockpit. A generous marlin door is to starboard. The swim platform is something many serious anglers would not want, but many of the “serious” sport fishermen also don’t consider long range cruising.

The cockpit coaming is designed to comfortably hold several rod holders (optional). It is obvious that although this is a convertible, it is more a luxury long-range cruiser and less sportfish out of the box. Most all the fishing features are optional, such as a cockpit livewell centered on the stern, rod holders and other fishy features. The 470 pictured has optional teak cabin sole and sidedecks. The sole has standard reinforcement for a fighting chair. Most important to big game anglers -- there is enough room behind the fighting chair for a mate to guide it and get by.

Cruising folks will put a tender on the boat with a hydraulic davit.

Access to the power plant is through a hatch in the forward section of the cockpit. The twin diesels are contained in a fully lined compartment with integral air intakes to protect them from ocean spray. The engines are positioned forward allowing for a shallow shaft angle. The fuel tank is forward of the engines and lies tranversely reducing trim effect as fuel is burned. Batteries are outboard and the filters are mounted at the back of the engines for easy service.

Saloon and Galley

A sliding glass door to port allows direct entry to the salon area without a step to navigate. The aft salon has comfortable plush loungers with a view out the picture windows. Rich wood paneling and matching wood stairs, which lead to the enclosed flying bridge, brighten and accent the room like a modern personal library. The inside stairway is a signature feature of Maritimo.

Maritimo 470 Offshore Convertible

The Maritimo is a "go-anywhere-anytime" boat in the best tradition of offshore convertibles. The enclosed bridge makes that possible.

Forward is the galley with more lounging space to port. The galley is simple with a four burner cooktop, combination convection/microwave and refrigerator/freezer. Hull one had a drawer style dishwasher.

Accommodations and Berthing

Four steps down from the galley are the berths and heads. There are three berths with a bunk style berth to starboard, the master to port and a guest in the forward vee.

The starboard bunk berth can serve as a dressing area or underway office or simply a berth. It shares a full head with the guest suite forward. The guest cabin has an island bed and portlights for natural daylight illumination. The master cabin has its own picture windows to the world to enjoy and an ensuite full head.

Enclosed Flying Bridge -- Sky Lounge

Access to the flying bridge helm is from the salon. The bridge is called an “enclosed” bridge with windshield and side windows and hardtop. Aft there is a safe railing and zip-up curtain. I like this arrangement over a solid glass bulkhead or sliding doors so I can see the action and better respond to backing down on a game fish or docking. The entire space can be heated and cooled for comfort.

The helm is positioned aft and to starboard with dual pedestal seating and well positioned electronics. Forward of the helm is a wonderful lounge with table where you will enjoy dining morning or night. This is a great place for entertaining and your friends will love hanging out here when you take them on a local harbor cruise.

This enclosed flying bridge provides what amounts to a second salon, dramatically increasing the boat's living space without a comenserate increase in price. A further advantage is the removal of the helm from the lowe deck which opens up more space for the galley and dinette.

Maritimo 470 Offshore Convertible

Standard power is Volvo Penta D11, 670-hp x 2. An 11 kW generator is also standard.

This yacht meets all of the requirements of an offshore convertible. In basic form, she is more a cruiser than sportfish, but with a few options, she will compete alongside most battlewagons. Coming in just below the $1,000,000 mark with no options, she can be just about anything the owner's heart and pocketbook will allow. The Aussies know about building rugged offshore yachts (they are an island nation after all), and Maritimo has a good reputation Down Under.

Bill Barry-Cotter has been in the yacht building business since founding Mariner in 1966 and Riviera in 1960. His companies are responsible for over 4500 yachts. This 470 is narrower in the beam, but does have the same LOA as her sister 500.

Whether you take the 470 Convertible out to the canyons off the east coast of America, or off the Great Barrier Reef, she appears to be well suited for game fishing or family cruising and at a million dollars, U.S., we'd say she's one of the best buys on the market.
