The Maritimo 48 is a boat that commands a close look at some of the features that make her a standout.

Well it didn’t take long for me to form an opinion of the Maritimo 48 Cruising Motoryacht. One look at that enclosed flying bridge and I was hooked. Anyone who’s been a regular reader of my reviews knows how I feel about spending a sizable amount of money on a quality yacht only to have to look through plastic windows. I know others may disagree, but my job is to present my opinion, and other opinions can fall where they may. Suffice it to say that I think an enclosed bridge is a good start to a yacht. Let’s see if Maritimo can continue with the rest of the story.
The Flying Bridge
So what does a great enclosed bridge consist of? Well in the case of the Maritimo 48, all it takes is a look around. There are two layouts offered. One with the helm forward and a settee aft, and the other with the two switched. Both are equally attractive, but to my eye, having the helm aft and a settee forward, it a better choice. Why? I’m glad you asked.
When sitting on a raised Stidd helm seat, your visibility is much the same whether you’re in either the forward or aft position. So why not let your passengers/guests enjoy the same view that you do? The only way for you to give them that treat is to have them in front of the helm. Of course on sportfishing convertibles the helm is almost always put aft so that the skipper can see cockpit action, so the forward seating benefits are built in.
Maritimo offers the 48 in either helm forward (top photo) or helm aft (above photo) layouts.
In either the forward or aft helm layout, the helmsman has an opening side window for docking visibility, plus the forward windows, as well as the aft doors all open for bringing fresh air throughout. If the outside temps are not up to par, then climate controls are available to combat the greenhouse effect of the glass. This flying bridge makes a wonderful gathering spot while underway as well as a full time entertaining platform. Being sheltered from the weather also eliminates the need for a lower helm, but it is still an option.
Dual gathering areas and an entertainment center are featured in the flying bridge as well as a comfortable aft deck.
As if the interior of the bridge deck weren’t attractive enough, just a step out the aft door and you have an elevated deck that is wide open and begging for the addition of a couple of Adirondack chairs to relax on while you watch the prop wash shrinking into the distance. Or, use it as a boat deck for your tender, kayaks, jet ski, or whatever. With the helm in the flying bridge, you can always carry your tender on the bow.
The main salon is equally well laid out. Maritimo didn’t bother with the galley up or galley down arguments. They went one better and came up with galley aft. It’s a very workable solution and keeps even the brief sandwich construction right in the thick of the gatherings, be they in the main salon or out of the aft deck.
The main salon is beautifully finished and offers wide open space to beat back any claustrophobic feeling. There is plenty of glass to give good sightlines to the horizon, even when seated, and that does a surprisingly effective job of eliminating mal de mer in some of your more landlubberly guests.
It wouldn’t hurt to add some overhead grab rails. Dual sitting areas have the guests facing each other for conversations.
The galley aft layout keeps the cooking in the middle of the crowd, whether inside or outside. Grab rails would be a welcome addition to the counter, as would fiddles around the stove.
And speaking of aft decks... nestled in the gorgeous teak is an entertainment center in the transom that is an outdoor lover’s dream come true. Grille, sink, storage, it’s all there. All that’s missing from the equation is a sizable pedestal table. There’s room for one, along with chairs so why not add it in? Cockpits are a great cocktail party venue.

Note how the galley aft layout keeps you centered on all the action on the main deck. The master stateroom is to port, identified as such by the sole entrance to the ensuite head. The head to starboard doubles as a day head.
There are three staterooms on the 48. The VIP is forward and features an island berth with one of the cleverest uses of space we’ve seen. Underneath the berth is a voluminous storage area that you can step down into. It even has drawers. A light automatically goes on when the berth is lifted and it’s open at the front for ease of access. We've never seen anything quite like this, so full marks to Maritimo for this.
How’s this for utilizing the space under a berth? Note the dedicated space for a fire extinguisher. Nice touch Maritimo.
Aft and to starboard is a guest stateroom with over/under bunks, and I continue to believe that this is also an excellent use of space. This room is typically allotted to the kids and they not only care about the bunks, -- at least the ones I’m exposed to love it.

The master lies aft and to port. There may be confusion over whether this is actually the master or if the forward stateroom is, and you wouldn’t be alone. What settled it for me is the single access to the port head. The starboard head is shared, thus we can settle on the port stateroom being the master. Aside from the head access, it has the typical accoutrements of the average stateroom in any boat this size.
The master lies to port and offers no surprises. Good overhead storage and night tables to the sides.
In my view the Maritimo 48 Cruising Motoryacht gets a thumbs up. I like the layout, love the enclosed bridge, and the fit and finish would make anyone proud to show her off. While I can’t comment on her performance and handling, it would be interesting to see if this boat is all show and no go, or if she’s just totally uncomfortable in a seaway. That will have to wait as a full test is currently not scheduled.
Overall, we like the concept of what would normally be considered at convertible being used as a cruising boat. We call this boat a convertible since you can fish from her so long as the skipper has sightlines to the cockpit. Because you can mount the tender on the foredeck, and even toys or other gear on the deck abaft the sky lounge/helm, she has a relatively low CG, and the sky lounge/bridge creates a lot of comfortable living space, we like the concept. Further, this boat is made for punching into snotty conditions and is not quite as delicate as some conventional flush-deck motoryachts we can think of. In fact, this 48-footer has as much space as on a number of convertibles in the mid-50s.
