Captain's ReportKawasaki's new 1100 STX D.I. might look like a 3-passenger cruiser, but its 1,071-cc engine with direct fuel injection turns it into a speed demon. It's also one of the cleanest jet skis on the water today.The 1100 STX D.I. has FICHT fuel injection which the company says reduces emissions by up to 60 percent while burning 1/3 less fuel and half as much oil . But we haven't lost any speed--in fact, this year's 1100 is faster than last year's carbureted version. But the most important compartment is the triple-cylinder engine which delivers 130-hp, and the secret to this jet ski’s performance is the FICHT fuel injector which sprays tiny, computer-controlled bursts of fuel directly into the chamber, delivering more precise combustion and fewer emissions.Out on the water, we found handling to be excellent. The deep-V hull tracks straight and turns on a dime, and this jet bike excels in rough water, even with multiple riders. It rides very dry, thanks to its newly designed sponsons and hull strakes.During our speed tests the STX D.I. instantly jumped on plane and hit a heart-pounding top speed of 52 mph, but Kawasaki says it has hit 56.8 mph in ideal conditions.
