JC Pontoon’s SportToon 26 should appeal to buyers looking for a roomy floor plan in a luxury-level pontoon boat, with the added option of layout customization. Her sleek curves and pointed bow are distinctively different from the typical box design, and will surely catch eyes on the lake or bay. Additionally, the SportToon 26 is built on a TriToon Sport Hull which features .91" thick aluminum construction for durability, lifting fins for increased speed, and a unique U-shape design that gives passengers a smooth ride with precise handling.
The JC Pontoon SportToon 26 floats on three high volume U-shaped pontoons that are built from .91" thick aluminum. Additional aluminum bottom skin offers protection and added security against rocks and accidental groundings. Lifting fins are located on the inside of the outer tubes as well as both sides of the center pontoon. This results in improved handling as well as greater overall speed. Z-shaped cross member bars on 16’’ centers are bolted through the marine-ply deck. The SportToon package also features a 45 gallon (170.34 L) gas tank built into the center tube, with optional in-tube ski storage. Another unique feature of the JC Pontoon design is the pointed bow, offering buyers additional space forward, along with a refreshing design change.
On the bow platform, polished aluminum castings offer extra protection for areas that are prone to wear, and stainless steel rails are located on both sides. Moving aft, dual stainless steel swing gates lock when underway and attach to a styled fiberglass molding with built-in stainless steel docking lights.
Chaise Lounge Seating.
In the forward cockpit, the dual chaise lounge style seats feature rotomolded bases and mounts that will never rot from water exposure. Both lounges have adjustable head and armrests, as well as stylistic multi-tone vinyl that continues throughout. All vinyl design and assembly is done in house to ensure the highest quality product. Both chaise backs are mounted on piano hinges that lift to reveal storage compartments that are perfect for day bags. The seat bases also lift, adding storage for life jackets and emergency gear. There are two stainless steel cup holders behind both headrests as well as an additional four forward. The company logo is embroidered into the headrests.
The captain’s chair features a high back with adjustable arms and headrest, and it swivels and reclines. The buyer also has the option of adding the helm station platform, which allows for better viewing forward even when seated. Mesh side pockets are included on the side of the chair for storing small items like a cell phone or wallet. Our favorite feature is the lever that allows the captain’s chair to recline, enabling the helmsman to catch some sun (or some Zs) when anchored or in port.
The helm station on the SportToon 26 is a combination of luxury and efficiency. A sport wheel with standard tilt allows the helmsman flexibility and overall comfort. Extra-large gauges along with a standard Hummingbird Matrix 788ci HD GPS are all easily viewed from the command seat. Below the dash a lockable glove compartment is conveniently placed for easy access to personal belongings, such as a cell phone or tablet.
A unique flip-top helm allows lifting the front of the console, with an assist from a gas piston, to provide full access to all electrical components and circuitry without having to crawl on the floor in the dark in search of wire harnesses.
Illuminated, water-resistant rocker switches line the panel in order of importance, with circuit breaker resets located directly beneath each switch. This eliminates the need for climbing underneath the dash to find a circuit breaker or broken fuse.
A water-resistant Clarion CMD8 CD player is mounted in the lower right corner of the console, within easy reach of the helmsman. The AM/FM/CD unit also comes standard with Sirius radio and six JL speakers that give tunes an extra boost. While the standard speakers are mounted on the lower frames of the lounges, overhead speakers are an added option with the optional wakeboard tower.
Optional Companion Chair.
Directly across from the captain’s chair is a high-back companion chair with retractable arms, which also swivels and reclines. This chair also has an elevating footrest, creating a comfortable lounge for anyone to relax and catch some rays. This chair is solidly built, with a rotomolded frame that’s mounted to a Garelick heavy-duty pedestal. The companion chair is not available in the standard L Group configuration.
Moving aft we find a spacious L-shaped sofa covered in dual-tone vinyl. Four cup holders are conveniently placed for easy access. This L-shaped seating includes an aft-facing chaise lounge, a comfortable spot to kibitz with the captain. A standard removable stern table contains two additional cup holders and provides a place to serve food and beverages. Directly behind the sofa, a spacious sun pad surrounded by a stainless steel grab rail, offers added lounging space when the boat is at rest.
Dual Swim Platforms.
Dual stainless steel entrance gates aft lead to dual swim platforms. Both of these platforms are accessible through the single entrance on the starboard side, and there's adequate footroom to walk around the splash well. Attached beneath the powder-coated deck, a hide-away stainless steel ladder conveniently folds out for easy re-entry, and returns to its position underneath when not in use. Two 12-volt outlets aft allow for easy inflation of tubes and watersports gear with the appropriate DC pumps.
The SportToon 26 features a standard, heavy-duty stainless steel tow rail and pylon aft. The added height keeps the towline off the motor cover.
Additional options are available for watersport fanatics, including an in-floor ski-locker. We would recommend this to any buyer interested in possible watersports because it keeps skis off the floor and out of sight when not in use. The ski-locker also includes a rubber mesh mat for easy draining and added protection from scratches and chips while underway. For those looking to go all out, the optional stainless steel wakeboard tower adds functionality and another entertainment component. The tower also provides a mount for additional JL speakers as well as a remote spotlight.
Options to Consider
This is a big plus on a boat with the mission of the SportToon 26. It gives the helmsman an added sense of boat traffic aft, as well as the location of anyone on the tow line. The mirror clamps to the side rail on a swivel arm, allowing for ideal positioning, regardless of the operator’s height.
L Group Bow Modules.
The builder offers multiple configurations for the bow chaise lounges. The buyer has the option of adding additional storage, a cooler, fold-out trash container, a flip-up table or changing room to the actual chaise structure. We feel that the optional changing room would be the most beneficial, considering the mission of the SportToon 26; nevertheless, the builder leaves room for customization.
A standard 10’ (3.05 m) Bimini provides passengers protection from excess heat and exposure to UV rays. An optional 16.5' (5.03 m) Bimini mounts forward of the 10’ Bimini, covering the entire front half of the boat, including the chaise lounges. For those looking for convenience and quick deployment, the builder also offers an optional 12’ (3.66 m) powered Bimini.
The fuel/water filter is an option we would recommend anyone purchasing a new boat to invest in, particularly where non-ethanol fuel is hard to get; water in the gas tank can result in loss of power and costly repairs to the fuel injection system.
Power and Price
The JC Pontoon SportToon 26 comes in several engine configurations, all available pre-rigged directly through the company. While many builders stick with one engine manufacturer, JC Pontoons offers Evinrude, Honda, Mercury or Suzuki outboard power. She comes nicely equipped with a 250-hp outboard, but is rated for up to 300-hp. While we haven’t tested the 2015 SportToon 26, comparable models powered with a 250-hp outboard, maxed out at 46.7 mph and reached 20 mph in less than 5.5 seconds.JC Pontoons encourages anyone interested in pricing and optional components to contact a local dealer for further information.
The exterior design and overall aesthetic of the boat is a refreshing change from the traditional boxy pontoon design we still see on the water. It’s a modern look that we feel will attract many buyers and families. The multiple seating configurations and storage possibilities leave plenty of room for entertaining and day cruising. Additionally, because there are so many optional components available from the builder, the buyer can truly customize the boat to his/her mission and need. The warranty through JC Pontoon appears solid, with five years on carpet and upholstery, three years on mechanical parts and a limited lifetime warranty on the pontoons and decking. The company posts all warranty information in detail on their website, citing exactly what’s covered and what is not.
