    Captain's Report

Hurricane SunDeck 217 I/O swim platform
The extended swim platform on the SD 217 I/O is an option that could be a worthwhile upgrade for families who plan to enjoy watersports.

The Hurricane SD 217 I/O is designed to combine the amenities and passenger and gear-carrying capacities of a pontoon boat and the performance benefits of a fiberglass V-bottom hull in a single vessel. She’s rated for a total of 11 passengers and a maximum horsepower rating of 300 and as part of Hurricane’s promotional program, the SD 217 I/O comes with popular standard equipment including an hour meter, a driver’s bucket seat, and an enclosed compartment with a sink that is suitable for an optional toilet.

Hurricane SunDeck 217 I/O floor plan
The bow and cockpit areas are almost identical in size so adults should be comfortable sitting in either location.

    Major Features

    Category 5 Hull.

Hurricane designs the SD 217 I/O’s bottom with sponsons that limit rocking of the boat when it’s at rest. The strakes and pronounced turned-down chines help the boat plane quickly and provide lift to improve overall performance. Finally, the shallow draft hull lets owners cruise in less depth and uses less power to get on plane. On deck, carrying the beam as far forward as possible makes the bow more adult friendly because there is more room in the footwell and greater sitting area.

Hurricane SunDeck 217 I/O wide chines
Hurricane calls the SD 217 I/O’s wide chines “sponsons”. Either way, they work with the strakes to provide lift when the boat is getting on plane and to improve overall efficiency when it’s running.

    Water-Resistant Connections.

All Hurricanes have the NextWave Electrical system that includes water-resistant Deutsch connectors and push-button circuit breakers. Key circuits are grounded independently to make it easier to trace shorts. Blade-style automotive style fuses resist corrosion better than barrel-style glass models.

    Package Upgrades.

The SD 217 I/O can be customized with four packages of popular upgrades. The Fishing Package includes a fishing seat, a livewell, rod storage and pre-wiring the boat for a trolling motor. The Deluxe Fishing Package replaces the standard fishing seat with a deluxe model. In The Hardware Upgrade package buyers get stainless steel speaker covers, a stainless-steel rubrail and ss cupholders. The Preferred Option Group comes with a boat cover, stern washdown and dual battery switch.

    Features Inspection

    The Bow

In addition to being spacious, the SD 217 I/O’s bow has some noteworthy convenience items. On the foredeck swim platform, there’s a boarding ladder that tucks into its own locker to starboard and a centerline anchor locker. In the step that leads to the bow seating area, Hurricane installs the insulated 25-quart cooler.

The optional fishing chair turns the bow platform into a workable casting deck.
    Hurricane SunDeck 217 I/O cooler
Having the cooler in the bow step means not having to haul a space-eating portable one on board.

    Forward Lounges.

The two bow lounges are long enough for adults to stretch out and the backrests on the consoles appear to be in a comfortably reclined position. The bottom cushions for the lounges open to access storage underneath. Stainless steel rails extend from the windshield to the foredeck companionway on each side and there are four cup holders in the bow.

Hurricane SunDeck 217 I/O bow lounge
For passengers in the bow lounge, the grab rails and cup holders are comfortably placed.
    Hurricane SunDeck 217 I/O gunwale
This cutout in the starboard gunwale makes it easier to board the SD 217 I/O from a dock.

    The Cockpit

The wide passage and walkthrough windshield lead into the SD 217 I/O’s cockpit. Forward to port, the enclosed head compartment in the console has a sink; a portable toilet or fixed pump-out toilet are optional. The L-shaped cockpit lounge wraps around from the port side adjacent to the helm to the stern passage to the aft swim platform.

    There is storage

in the seat bases. For entertaining and quick cleanups, the boat has a cockpit sink abaft the helm seat, six cup holders and a Sony Bluetooth stereo and two speakers. Aft, there is a boarding ladder and ski tow eye, and the full or extended swim platform should be a popular option.

Hurricane SunDeck 217 I/O sink hatch
It may not seem like much, but the hatch over the sink will help keep out wind-blown debris and there is storage in the base.

    The Helm.

The SD 217 I/O’s driver’s seat is a pedestal-mounted bucket with a fold-up bolster that permits operating the boat from a standing or leaning position. The dash has a full complement of instruments including a tachometer and speedometer, a voltmeter, an hour meter and water temperature, oil pressure and trim gauges. The steering is a power-assist system and the steering wheel is on a tilt assembly.

    Hurricane SunDeck 217 I/O trailer
A half-ton truck or full sized SUV should have plenty of power to tow the SD 217 I/O on a tandem-axle trailer.

    Observations

Deck boats are versatile do-everything vessels and the SD 217 I/O should be able to multi-task with the best of them in protected water. In the cockpit or bow, adults sit up to their shoulders, which should make the boat plenty secure for kids and even pets, too. This aspect along with the reverse sponson-like chines should also help keep the boat dry from spray. We like the twin prop packages such as the Volvo Penta DuoProp or MerCruiser Bravo III for watersports because the extra, counter-rotating propeller will help keep the boat on plane at lower speeds and improves maneuverability around the docks or launch ramp.
