Brief Summary

Being a “convertible” means that the yacht has been designed for both bluewater fishing and luxury cruising. The Hatteras 77 Convertible has the range, capability, and luxury to capture a broad spectrum of yachtsmen, and her huge interior volume is lavishly appointed. With a massive cockpit, 3’5” (1.04 m) of aft freeboard, and a huge tower, she’s well-suited for deep-water fishing, even from destinations that are days offshore.

    Captain's Report

    Hatteras 77 Convertible running
    The Hatteras 77 Convertible has a length overall of 76’10” (23.4 m), a beam of 22’ (6.71 m), and a draft of 5’3” (1.60 m).

    Features Inspection

    Main Deck

    Cockpit

The cockpit can be entered from simply stepping onto the coaming and down onto a high-gloss teak step. Otherwise, owners can choose to have a lift up coaming gate, but this option must be chosen before the initial gel date for obvious reasons.

    Two 60” (152.4 cm) fishboxes

are in the deck to port and starboard. The transom includes both a massive optional fishbox and a recirculating livewell. An optional chipped ice machine ensures that the catch will remain fresh for the long trip back to the homeport. Fresh and salt water washdowns are fitted with quick connects.

    Standard features

also include a 5 cu. ft. bait freezer. Dropdown modules allow owners to customize to their desires with freezers, baitwells, etc.As is always the case with Hatteras convertibles, there is an upper mezzanine providing an elevated view of the cockpit deck. A freezer is to the outboard side. At foot level is a pair of 20-gallon (76 L) storage tubs to starboard with a third to port. Also to port is a rigging station. Teak is optional for the mezzanine, coaming, and cockpit sole.

    Flying Bridge

    Hatteras 77 Convertible layout
The enclosed flying bridge provides Hatteras with the ability to up the luxury and create a Sky Lounge that guests and family will find hard to resist.

We love the concept of the enclosed flying bridge. It provides the protection needed for adding a huge dose of luxury to the area, and we’re not looking through “plastic” windows on our multi-million dollar yacht. It also allows the area to become more of a Sky Lounge, as well as an elevated operating station. This means that the occupants can be in close proximity to the captain, who in most cases will be hosting the gathering, as well as enjoying much of the same view, all while ensconced in luxurious ambiance.

    Hatteras 77 Convertible skylounge
The skylounge offers amazing views along with a forward operational station. Note that the captain is flanked port and starboard with wide companion seats.

    A Flybridge for Living.

Hatteras outfitted the enclosed bridge with forward facing seating for four plus the captain, with a center-mounted helm seat and two double-wide seats to port and starboard. The console is designed to house up to five displays, in addition to the Hatteras’ computer-based systems monitor, keeping an electronic watch over the ship’s electrical, engine diagnostics, fuel transfer, and tank levels. To the rear is a raised sectional sofa that can house rods in lengthy storage below. Opposite is a dry bar with a combination refrigerator, icemaker, and the obligatory TV, in this case a 37” (94 cm) flip-down.

    Battle Stations.

Now, lest the fishermen clutter this enclosed bridge by restricting the view of the action in the cockpit, rest assured, functionality is restored with the addition of a helm at the starboard quarter of the bridge under the overhang. In addition to this auxiliary station, the boat can also be operated from the tower or the flip-down panel in the cockpit.

    Salon

    Hatteras 77 Convertible layout
The main deck features the salon aft with a galley ahead and to port and dining to starboard. This galley arrangement has more working deck space than we have seen in most arrangements in class.

    We enter the salon

through a pneumatically operated door that activates by the touch of a button. It remains open for five seconds to allow entry or egress and then closes automatically. Sensors will detect the presence of another person in the field and abort the closing process. This can, of course, be overridden in the event that an owner would like the door to remain open.

    Beam Pays Off.

At once, we see the benefit of the 22’ (6.71 m) beam -- the widest in class. The 354 sq. ft. (32.88 sq. m) salon provides plenty of open space, all augmented by the average 6’6” (1.98 m) headroom seen throughout most of this yacht. This is so much space, in fact, that Hatteras saw no need to move the flying bridge staircase to the cockpit, a necessary move on some yachts to save space in the interior. Here, the staircase is not only proudly established in the salon, it’s a beautiful addition to it.

    Hatteras 77 Convertible main deck
The entire main deck is well-appointed with all areas on the same level. We think Hatteras has found just the right combination of functionality with tasteful décor.

An L-shaped sofa has rod storage underneath and lies across from a 50” (127 cm) flat screen TV. To port, and just inside the entry, is a day-head making it not only useful for the main deck, but easily accessible to the cockpit as well. It also alleviates the concern of those “dirty” fishermen traipsing through the main deck to get to a head below.

    Galley/Dining

Both the salon and galley are on a single level. A wraparound bar provides counter space to place several meals along with ample food prep space. Three custom stools allow for more casual lunches and certainly the lunch on the fly for the cockpit crew. Flooring is low maintenance Amtico. Granite countertops are optional.

    Hatteras 77 Convertible galley
The galley presents an efficient use of space for a working chef. Notice the stone counters and backsplash.

The galley is well-appointed with high-end appliances, including two SubZero freezer drawers. A 15.3 cu. ft. upright refrigerator can be substituted for dual refrigerated drawers -- a choice we highly recommend, as drawers do not spill out their contents after transiting a long offshore run.Elsewhere, the galley includes a trash compactor, garbage disposal, four-burner ceramic cooktop, and microwave oven.

    Hatteras 77 Convertible layout
The optional layout with a galley island has bar seating for four.
    Hatteras 77 Convertible dinette
To starboard, the large dinette consists of a C-shaped lounge with stone tabletop. Just ahead is a utility room that can house anything from rods to a washer/dryer. Across from that is a pantry with a 48 cu. ft. freezer.

    Accommodations Deck

    Hatteras 77 Convertible layout
The lower deck includes four staterooms, each with a private head. Separate crew quarters are behind the master and has a private entrance from the engine room.
    Hatteras 77 Convertible layout
An optional layout expands the master at the expense of crew quarters and adds a huge walk-in closet that any fashionista will love. Note the office (or vanity) forward to port.

    The Master Stateroom

The master suite is full-beam with stunning decor. A king berth is centerline-mounted and includes a fabric headboard against a teak-tiled bulkhead. Chests of drawers are to port and starboard. Portlights signal a departure from Hatteras’ long standing tradition of keeping the hull clean of such encumbrances. Any owner not wanting them, need only ask.

    Hatteras 77 Convertible master stateroom
The master stateroom is at once efficient and clutter free. Notice how the TV flush mounts into the forward bulkhead.
    Hatteras 77 Convertible master head
The master head features his-and-her sinks nestled into stone counters.

    The level of flexibility

in this stateroom is remarkable. To the portside is a large dresser that can be swapped out for a sofa. A foyer to the master features an office workstation, and this area can be ordered as a sitting area with a sofa and 20” (51 cm) TV. The crew quarters can be swapped out for his-and-her heads fore and aft to starboard and a large walk-in closet to port. We like the versatility that the Hatteras design offers -- it is a breath of fresh air in class.

    Forward Staterooms

Two staterooms lie just ahead. To starboard is a queen berth stateroom. To port is a twin berth stateroom, both with en suite heads. Forward is a fourth stateroom with an island queen. Of course, this can be configured with port and starboard twins if an owner desires.

    Hatteras 77 Convertible queen stateroom
The starboard queen stateroom has the bed against the hull side with nightstand storage to the other.

    Operations

The Hatteras 77 Convertible is powered by a pair of 1800-hp CAT C-32A mains that should provide the “giddy up” that those offshore charters are looking for. If more is needed, an upgrade to 1900-hp C-32s or 2600-hp 16V-2000 MTU engines is available.Elsewhere in the engine room there is a 1400 GPD water maker from Sea Recovery that includes both a pre-filter and UV-filter. This will feed into the 380-gallon (1438 L) water tank. The hydraulics are controlled by both PTO’s and separate units that will control larger items, such as the optional 1500 lb. (680 kg) lift capacity Marquipt bow davit for launching a tender. Electricity is provided by a pair of 27.5 Onan gensets. The yacht is climate controlled from a 118,00 BTU reverse-cycle Cruisair system.

    Hatteras 77 Convertible running
This offshore behemoth has the legs to take her over long distances in the hunt for big gamefish.

    For handling around the dock

, we’ve yet to see a Hatteras that didn’t have the thrust to move her about as desired with little more than a nudge into gear. That said, the 77 Convertible also offers the integrated Xenta Joystick that combines the power of the 12” (30.5 cm) 38-hp bow and stern thrusters with the mains to give full maneuverability at the dock, making the owner operator experience even more pleasurable.

    Observations

Hatteras certainly has a flair for the dramatic, and this huge sportfish certainly presents a dramatic appearance. Her enclosed bridge deck, single level main, and four stateroom plus crew layout certainly fits in with that mindset. Our most important observation is that the Hatteras 77 Convertible’s 22’ (6.71 m) beam gives her tremendous advantages over other boats in class. She simply has more room nearly everywhere. Guests will appreciate that because of the extra space in their cabins. Her added beam gives her more stability in a seaway and her displacement will make for smoother riding.
