One of the first snap shots of the new Grady-White Canyon 366 just after being launched in an undisclosed location near Greenville, NC. She will be the flagship of the new Grady-White “Canyon” Series of offshore center consoles from 28’ to 36’.
When Grady-White decides to shake things up a bit, it doesn’t fool around. This new Canyon series marks a serious leap into a highly competitive market, and this at time when other manufacturers are regrouping and backing off production. That’s a testimony to the tenacity of the “survival of the fittest” business model that makes Grady-White not only a survivor, but a definite fighter in the marine arena.
For this new series, Grady has once again called upon the considerable design talents of C. Raymond Hunt Associates. These are the folks that have turned out a long line of classics for notable names like G-W, Boston Whaler, Bertram, and Four Winns just to name a few. All have been hits with dedicated boaters and hard-core fisherman alike, and this newest Canyon Series looks like it will be putting the rest of the CC builders on notice that the Grady-White of old is back.
As you look at the accompanying photos, you’ll notice that these are clearly not marketing shots. These are from the first launch of a new model that hasn’t even hit the marketing department yet. Starting at the helm of the Canyon 366, we find three bucket seats, all with individual bolsters. Notice, though, that the helmsman is in the center, not to port. This means that the two companions are already on the sides and have access to the whole boat without anyone having to get out of the way. Simple details! The seats are adjustable and all have armrests, for providing support in sustained high-speed operations. All occupants are within easy reach of the molded in footrest that also has storage underneath.
That’s a standard light-weight aluminum hardtop without the ugly aluminum pipes criss-crossing all over the place. Both it and the rocket launchers are painted with Imron, not powder coated. Check out the electronics enclosure, it’s electromechanically operated and adjusts the instruments to the skipper’s height!
The electronics enclosure is just ahead of the wheel and is electromechanically operated so it can be positioned to suit any helmsman, regardless of height. Overhead, the aluminum hardtop has a ventilation hatch, a massive radio box, radial mounted outriggers, dome lighting, molded-in sound system speakers plus molded-in spreader lights fore and aft. It’s finished in Imron, which is a very difficult finish to apply, and it’s also on the leaning post mounted rocket launchers.
For the ultimate in protection and visibility, the whole console is wrapped in frameless tinted safety glass, not plexi or Isinglass. And yes, the wiper and freshwater washer are both standard.
The stainless steel wheel is connected to a Teleflex power assist steering system, and all controls are within easy reach, including trim switches. The Grady-White Canyon 366 can be powered by up to three Yamaha 350-hp engines which Grady-White predicts will push this boat up to 55 mph. Feeding those engines is a 420 gallon (1589.8 l) fuel capacity. Clearly, this is a long-range fishing boat.
Since we didn’t come here for sightseeing, the Grady-White Canyon 366 brings an impressive array of tools to the table for teasing, hooking, and storing whatever Davy Jones can present. Let’s start with the fishboxes. At the bow, there are two, one to each side, that double as seats. Each is insulated, has a 263 qt. (248.9 L) capacity, and both drain overboard. Aft is a 291qt. (275.4 L) fishbox that is also insulated and overboard draining. The standard deluxe leaning post has a 41 gallon (155.2 L) insulated raw water livewell w/ see-through lid, light, full column distribution inlet and overboard drain and 110 GPH (4164 LPH) pump, a lure holder, and a rigging station with freshwater sink and 41 qt. (155.2 L) cooler.
For rod holders, there are six on the post, and ten deck-mounted, and there’s storage for six under the gunwales, and five in the cabin.
For safety, there are bolsters all around, cockpit toe rails to tuck your feet under for added safety, and the cockpit has no less than six cockpit drains to quickly dispatch any water that you may ship aboard during a fight. The cockpit is 28” deep, so angler should feel secure no matter where they are in the boat. With the aft foldaway seat in the stowed position, the cockpit measures a roomy 85 square feet.
Under the fold-away rear seat is a 291-qt. (275.4 l) fishbox that is insulated and overboard draining. The transom can hold up to three 350-hp Yamahas. Note the separate seats, all are adjustable with individual flip-up bolsters.
And a cabin…
Grady-White built its reputation on its walk around designs that made fishing machines also family-friendly 25 years ago. Now, the new Canyon 366 is arguably the most famly-friendly large center console in production. Although one may question the need for mixing family in an offshore center console, that’s fine – just consider you are pampering your fishing buddies. They won’t mind one bit.
At first we thought that it may make for a good overnight fishing boat, but with one double berth, that idea was out the window. At least with the guys we fish with. That said, there is quite a bit of creative use of space in the center console cabin. Cherry steps will lead you below and you enter a cabin complete with a galley containing Corian countertops and an optional microwave. There’s a standard stainless sink and refrigerator. By pulling a heavy duty shower curtain, you can close off a shower space and hidden head. There’s a mirror that conceals an optional TV/DVD player. Forward is the aforementioned single, double-wide berth.
There is so much standard on this boat, that the options list is pretty sparse. On the must have list though, is a bow table that converts to a casting platform. It’s motorized to serve both functions. The 15 ft. (4.6 m) outrigger kit will certainly be a necessity, and some anglers may want the freezer option for the aft fishbox. Air conditioning is another option to consider. It comes with a 4 kW diesel gen set that will have its own 12 gallon (45.4 L) fuel capacity.
The optional bow table is on a motor-driven pedestal and doubles as a casting platform. Note the flush mounted stainless bowrails. Both forward bench seats are atop 263-qt. (248.9 L) capacity fishboxes. An anchor windlass is concealed in the forward locker with controls at the bow and the helm. Bench seating for three is right in front of the console.
The Grady-White Canyon 366 has a LOA of 36' 7" (11.15 m) and a beam of 13' 2" (4.01 m). The cockpit depth is a comfortable 28" (0.71 m) with bolsters all around. Her draft is dependent on your choice of engines, but as for the hull, she’ll draw 29" (0.74 m). The only missing ingredient to the statistics is her weight, as she hasn’t made it to the scales yet, but considering her build and size, she won’t be a lightweight.
For features that reset the bar for what Grady-White is capable of, the Grady-White Canyon 366 is just the boat to get the attention of other center console manufacturers, and have billfish running for cover. Like most all builders these days, to get one of the new Canyon 366s, it will have to be ordered and production numbers are limited. If you think you may be interested, our suggestion is that you get your name on a production slot before Grady’s big marketing campaign gets kicked off this fall.
