Four Winns H180 Captain's Report

Stylish Runabout With the Emphasis on Fun

By Captain Keith Burton

Test Captain

These days, if a company is in the business of building boats they have to get things right or the company will not last. Getting things right means building a boat with quality materials, stout engineering and precise build quality. Such is the case with the 2006 H180, an entry-level runabout from Four Winns boats.

Four Winns turned us loose on their latest edition of the 180 at their test facility in Cadillac, Michigan for a full round of tests. Here is an entry-level boat with upscale features, a sporty look and economical performance that should be appealing to any first-time boat buyer.

Four Winns has been building fiberglass boats for over 40 years and the company’s experience is reflected in the H180.

Sporty Styling

Sitting beside the dock, you can’t help but notice the graceful, sleek lines and graphics of the 180. While not a large boat, the 180 offers a remarkable amount of space onboard for a family of four and a couple of guests.

At the Bow

The bow features the typical wraparound seating characteristic of a bowrider, but there are some details that make it stand out. Four Winns uses a special vinyl for their seats called Aquaflex that is highly durable but remarkable soft to the touch and pliable. This adds to the upscale feel of this affordable boat. Under the bow seats are small storage compartments for gear, but they don’t just open to a carpeted compartment as in many entry-level boats. The compartments are fully lined and drained.

Moving through the swept-back walkthrough windshield, you will find a main cabin that features a fully-instrumented helm, complete with black on white gauges with sporty chrome bezels set within a plastic turned-metal looking dash that is a nice departure from the faux wood on other boats.

Our boat was outfitted with an available wrap-around bucket seat for the captain. The passenger seat was a foldout sun lounge on the port side. Although the captain’s seat sits low to the floor, there is plenty of legroom, and the seat swivels and moves back and forward. Also at hand is a thick steering wheel that matches the boat’s colors, which tilts for added comfort at the helm.

On the deck is a floor storage compartment for skis and wakeboards. The hatch opens with the assistance of a hydraulic support, which is unusual in this class of boat where most deck hatches have no support at all.

On the passenger side, a large compartment at the dash protects a marine-use AM/FM/CD Sirius satellite-ready radio. Four speakers, two at bow and two within the main cabin, provide plenty of volume for tunes over the water.

We also like the full-fiberglass floor and available snap-in carpeting, which should make clean up after a day at the beach very simple.

Innovative Seating

At the stern are two jump seats to port and starboard that flank the fiberglass engine cover of this sterndrive boat. The 180’s designers clearly were thinking innovation here as the padded seats can be removed and flipped over to provide a non-skid step for getting aboard. But in addition, when placed at a higher position, the seats create a wide sun pad at the stern. Also, when the seats are in the sun pad position, there is space for a small cooler beneath. This is great flexibility in a small pleasure boat that you don’t often see.

The top of the engine cover is padded and styled to match the seats when in their sunpad positions. A nice feature is that you can access the engine without having to remove the engine cover. Four Winns’ designers crafted a hatch at the top of the cover to provide access to the engine for checking routine maintenance such as oil level and belt condition.

At the stern is a full-width ski platform and a powder-coated aluminum foldout ladder painted to match the boat. The ladder has wider steps than most ladders, which should make getting aboard easier.

Over the water, the Four Winns H180 performs well. The hull glides over most waves and wakes with confidence, no undue creaking or shuddering from a hull flexing too much. But as a small boat, it is always best to slow down when moving over wakes to avoid shaking up your passengers.

This boat is available with either a 135-horsepower MerCruiser or Volvo sterndrive. Either package will give you top speeds in the low 40’s and a cruise speed near 30 mph. Both engines are a bit noisy, and as four-cylinder engines, they do generate some vibrations through the hull. But they are very reliable and economical to operate and will provide many years of use.

Overall, the Four Winns H180 has a lot to offer the first time boat buyer. It is stylish, with a contemporary design, and plenty of room aboard for its size. It also has comfortable seating and economical performance, but best of all, this is a boat that should provide years of affordable and reliable fun for the whole family.
