Brief Summary

When Four Winns picked the naval architectural firm of C. Raymond Hunt to design their 378 last year they were sending a signal that the company was getting serious about taking on the blue water market. The boys in Cadallic, Michigan are walking softly, but they are carrying very big plans, indeed. If you are thinking about an express cruiser in the mid-40 foot range, the V-458 should be a “must see” before you make any final decisions.

Four Winns V458 (2008) Line Drawing

Captain's Report

The hull’s fine entry and deadrise at critical hull stations enables it to deliver soft ride in rough water. That’s what the deep-V and Ray Hunt designs are all about. (FYI—Ray Hunt designed the bottom of the Bertram 31 which was first produced in 1961 and started the deep-V trend in offshore powerboats.)

But there is a lot more to the new 458 than a deep-V bottom, the interior is a giant step forward for Four Winns in terms of opulence, large-yacht features and technology. Powered by Volvo’s IPS pod drives, the 458 delivers some 25% better economy than similar-sized yachts with conventional inboards, and fingertip control with the Volvo IPS joystick makes handling this boat dockside a pleasure for the whole family.

Helm station visibility is very good with a big expanse of windshield glass forward and minimal interference from the sculpted hardtop supports and mullions. Full-height bow railings lead all the way forward along wide, flat side decks, adding a good measure of topside safety. The oversized power swim platform lowers to serve as a tender dock or diving staging area, while two sets of stern cleats add mooring options. Down below, the layout features cherry cabinetry, and large side ports and overhead hatches flood the interior with sunlight.

There’s more: the cockpit railing and deckhouse railing back aft, the transom trunk, extended visor over the cockpit, enclosable cockpit area, storage bins under the deck port/stbd aft, long pantograph windshield wiper, teak aft, etc. all of which our quality up-grades and good, thoughtful design.

With twin Volvo-Penta IPS 500s, retail price is $640,000. With IPS 600s, retail is $676,554.

Two-person helm seat with C-shaped lounge to port and a large seating area in the stern. You can add a hydraulic-powered extended swim platform to the yacht’s integral platform.

A simple but smart layout below. The galley/salon separates the master stateroom/berth from the aft secondary stateroom. Both staterooms have their own private heads and showers.

The galley features lots of countertop space (with fiddles), a huge portlight to welcome natural light, and wood-grain cabinetry. The dinette to starboard can easily seat four. The teak-and-holly sole is standard.

Looking aft, you can see that the dinette table is supported by two posts to ensure its sturdiness underway. A handrail to starboard helps you negotiate the cabin stairs. The dinette seating also coverts to a berth.

Once again, the master berth allows ample natural light. You’re in the lap of luxury on the V458, but the builder has not forgotten about safety. Note the large overhead hatch for emergency exiting.

What a great place for the kids—and the dog! The mid-cabin stateroom’s includes twin, oversized berths, a dresser and drawers, and a hanging locker.
