All fuel consumption numbers are the total for all engines in the boat. Speeds are measured with Stalker ProSports radar gun or GPS. Fuel consumption (gallons per hour) measured with Floscan digital fuel-flow meter or by on-board factory-installed diagnostic instruments. Range is based on 90% of published fuel capacity. Sound levels determined using Radio Shack digital decibel meter on A scale. 68 dBA is the level of normal conversation. Time to plane is measured from start of acceleration to formation of rooster tail behind boat.

Captain's Report

The 42 Lighting with diesel power was designed to maintain Fountain’s tradition of speed combined with luxury. However this year the company incorporated the safe and fuel efficient diesel power plant. The market seems to be calling for more of the diesel power plants that can produce the speed of the traditional gas powered boats, and I think Fountain has answered this call. The 42 Lighting was very surprising when it came to handling. She was quick to respond and quite agile in tight turns. From a dead stop I found her a little slow, but she made up for it once up on plane. Out test boat reached a top speed of 76.8 miles per hour, with a best cruise of 42 miles per hour. As with all Fountain’s the visibility from the helm was very good, and the low profile design of the boat gave us close to 360% of visibility. The controls are designed for a racing boat which might make a novice boater nervous, but once you see and understand the set up of the controls it becomes clear that this is the best way, (throttles in between gear shifts), and a smaller wheel backed with a complete array of gauges sets the tone for that raceing feel of the helm area. The 42 has a good overall layout both topside and down below. The cockpit has racing seats for the driver and passenger, and the aft bench seats three to four. The swim ladder folds out from the transom making it quite easy to get in for a dip, and there’s an optional fresh water transom shower to wash off before coming aboard. The combination of leisure and racing feathers is quite apparent on this boat. The forward cabin is well designed and shows good use of space. There is however low headroom and it’s narrow toward the front, but that’s the price you pay for the look and speed of a high-performance machine. And the trade off is well worth it if your main concern is speed. The engine room on this boat is remarkably large, and there’s plenty of working space to move around and work on the engines. You can reach oil filters with ease and everything is well marked. All in all the 42 lighting diesel is a fast and luxurious high-performance boat, with a well laid out floor plan, combined with diesel power, and a long list of standard equipment. I think this is what the market is looking for!By Capt. Dan MaxwellTest Captain
